During the earlier part of the 1980's, Sega was one of the heavy hitters in the arcade scene with smash hits such as After Burner and Outrun. When the NES came out, Sega tried to counter with the release of its Sega Master System. Unfortunately for Sega, the Master System did not particularly sell well due to its poor 3rd party support and Nintendo's shady business dealings with developers which would be totally illegal in today's world.

In 1989, Sega came out with a revolutionary console: the Sega Genesis. It blew people away with its 16-bit processor which was unheard of at the time. They decided to pack the system with one of its most popular arcade games: Altered Beast. This game left a very good impression on gamers as the graphics were nearly as good as its arcade counterpart. A great deal of the games were targeted towards older kids, which is evident in the number of sports games and the older arcade ports to the system. This move made sense, at least in my opinon, since a lot of the stuff that younger children consider "cool" is often contingent on the opinion of what older kids think.

Sales immediately took off, but Nintendo was still well ahead. What Sega was missing was a mascot, a character from a game that would define the system. Alex Kidd was quickly falling out favor. Then in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog came out and became an instant success. Sega of America quickly noted the potentiality behind this character and quickly made him their mascot. They replaced the pack-in game Altered Beast, with Sonic. Sales skyrocketed and Sega was actually able to leapfrog Nintendo for the Number 1 spot for more than a year until the SNES started to gain a larger following around late 1992.

So with the massive amount of games available, what is your one favorite game for the system and why? Please don't hold any comments back. Brevity is not a virtue in this situation.

I don't think I can comment on a favorite sega game yet... I never had one as a kid, I remember a friend of mine did, and I do remember playing Toe Jam and Earl on it, but I think that was the only game I remember.  I have a ton of genesis games now, but I don't play it all that often.  I really enjoy using the nomad, that is one of favorite handhelds save for the TG express!  I do remember playing sonic a bit, probably at babbages and toys r us!..

I never played General Chaos, but Earthworm Jim is def cool. It is so unique and awesome. Using snot as a grappling hook, heck yeah. My fave one was the sequel. The levels were so different from each other, it really kept the gaming experience 'funky'. I remember the carnival theme level where Jim inflates his head and floats upwards. And in the next level you are trying to prevent puppies from hitting the ground by using a marshmallow as a trampoline. So many laughs.

I gotta go with Streets of Rage 2 or the EA NHL hockey series.  But I guess those EA titles made it to the SNES as well so does that count? None of those EA hockey games ran as smooth as the Genesis versions so they almost were like different games.

for multiplayer nba jam t.e. is extremely fun when playing with a buddy. when versing each other, constant fouling and bullshit shots make it fun. for single player, i am true to sonic 2. the others were good but it was a perfect balance of challenge and fun. it was not overly complex to figure out some of the levels (casino stage and the industrial stage) lol

I've never played Boogerman, but I find it hard to believe that it could top E-Jim. The weapons, scenarios and the music are very imagintive.

Hey Genesis guy, it's pretty cool to read that there are people that still enjoy these sports games. Back in the day, I was young and not into sports at all. But I did enjoy games that added a little extra umph such as NBA Jam or Baseball Simulator for the NES. The rest of those games, I hate to say, are just paperweights to me... Probably because my first 'real' sports games were the 3D Madden ones.

There were so many of my favorite games on that system, its hard for me to choose. Its probably Phantasy star IV. I loved the story, music and the art. Vectorman was also one of my favs. It was a little late in the 16bit era, but the smooth animation and unique art style impressed me at the time.

In 1992, former employees from Konami got together to form a company called Treasure. Many of these people had worked on Contra which one of my top 5 NES faves. Under Treasure, they went on to produce highly underrated games such as Dynamite Headdy, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.

My personal favorite on the Genesis should come as no surprise as this game is often considered their one of their masterpieces: Gunstar Heroes

It is a run and gun shooter very much along the lines as the Contra franchise. You take control of either the red or blue soldier whose goal is to retrieve all of the jewels that have been stolen. At the start of the game you have the option of starting out with a blue laser beam that does medium damage, green homing missiles that do light damage, and a red fire beam that does heavy damage, but has a short range. There are also short range melee attacks such as grappling or slide kicking. A cool thing about the game is that you can combine weapons to enhance your weapon, or create a new weapon altogether. I personally love fusing the green and red weapons. You will need every bit of firepower you can obtain since there is lots of action on screen. One of the most unique aspects of Gunstar Heroes is the bosses. You will fight anything ranging from a barrage of midget soldiers to fighting a raggedy teddy bear.

This is not a beat after one play type of game. This should not be surprising since this was developed by former Konami employees. However, the game is not hard that you need to cheat in order to win. After a couple of tries, you will have the game beat after you learn all of the patterns. This is one best 2p co-op games around. Even with two players and all the insanity on-screen, there is not a hint of slowdown which makes the game play experience a smooth one.

If you are an owner of a Genesis, you should acquire this game if you don’t already own it. It has a very high replay value, especially with a harder mode at your disposal as well.

Chany,

A lot of those Genesis sports games that fill the shelves at thrift stores are certainly dated.  But the EA NHL series is still the most fun of any hockey games I've come across.  I got some newer hockey games for my PS2 and it is like I had to actually learn how to play hockey before I could enjoy the game.  I don't have time for that.  Which is another great thing about the EA Hockey series.  You can fire up the Genesis and get a game in in under 15 mins.

I've never owned Gunstar Heros.  I should pick that up.

My vote is gonna have to go between 2 games.

Streets of Rage 2 and Gunstar Heroes

Streets of Rage 2 was Just one of those games for me that Made me want to rush home to play it after school, didn't matter how many times I had beaten it. It had a really high replay value to me. The same could be said of Gunstar Heroes.

And thanks for the heads up Maxrage, I didn't know it was on the PSN, kudos bro!!

I loved Streets of Rage 2, i couldnt even guess how many times me and my friends beat that game. Herzog Zwei was another of my favs. I dont think it was very well known, It was kinda like RTS meets shooter. You could build units and order them around, but then you could fly around in a space robot jet thing and destroy the enemy units. I hadnt played anything like it at the time and thought it was loads of fun.

Maybe we should start a PSN name and XBLA gamertag thread and post our names
