As a self proclaimed poetry analyst (what else can I do with my English Major from TU?), I would like to strengthen Tucker's arguments about Jay-Z's "Glory," because lyrics are after all, this generation's poetry. "You don?t yet know what swag is/ But you was made in Paris"- Jay-Z is indeed implying here that the fact that B.I.C. was born in Paris gives her swag. It is certainly clear in the lyrics that he finds her birth in Paris to be related to having swag, or else as Tucker stated, he would not have coupled the two things. However, I think the most problematic part of this couplet is actually Jay-Z's belief that 'swag is' somehow rhymes with 'Paris.' They don't rhyme. And the whole Child of Destiny/Destiny's Child bit- everyone knows that that much repetition of a single word or phrase actually weakens the effect. If he had made a simple line about that coincidence it would have been lovely, but he took it too far. I have to agree with Tucker here. The sentiment is strong, but the lyrics are a bit weak. My guess is he wrote these down in 15 minutes on a napkin in the caf of the hospital and decided not to do any editing when it came to recording because the original lyrics were to him, destiny.
