I feel terrible. Last night when I put the birds away, the American Buff goose went in with the Embden geese. I should have counted heads and realized there was one too many, but I didn't and she paid dearly for my error. The Embden geese are notorious for being agressive birds and the Buff geese are noted for the sweet gentle natures and non agressive personalities. I imagine that goose was terrified and continually and brutally attacked by the much larger geese. This morning she was hiding in a corner of the shelter, badly hurt. The feathers and skin and pieces of flesh were torn from ther back and neck leaving raw exposed meat. I got her out and put her in a pen by herself, made her a straw bale shelter, then bathed her with a weak iodine solution and lots of water. Fortunately, the weather was cooperating tonight, with temperatures just above zero. In two days, when the wound has closed on its own, I will fashion a coat for goose to keep the exposed flesh from freezing. And it was all my fault. I am so so sorry, Goose.
