ABOUT THE VILLAGE
Roussa Ekklisia is a village that belongs to the municipality of Sitia – county of Lassithi. It has a really healthy climate and a lot of greenery. It’s 9 kilometers far from Sitia. It has panoramic view towards Sitia bay. Some other districts are included in the same region. There is a spring up to the village in an expanse called Gaetanas. So the spring water comes to the village square fountain but before it ends to the fountain, it passes below St. Nicholas church. On account of water flowing beneath the church’s sanctuary, it’s called Roussa Ekklisia. There’s also an assumption that because of the red ground colour of the area which was associated to the existence of the first settlement church gave the name to the village. This assumption is considered to be even more probable than the previous one. There is an age-old plane tree about 700 years old on the village square, which is monument for the village together with the historical Axelos fountain. There are two restaurants in the village square that gather a lot of people during summer months. Their specialties are nice local food and raki. Roussa Ekklisia is a nice place for summer trips because of its cool climate. Before getting into the village, there are newly stone-built apartments for visitors need quiet and nice view for unforgettable staying during their holidays. Roussa Ekklisia makes every visitor come back again because of the traditional Cretan hospitality.
