POPOS - Post Office Points Of Sale

Sub Post Office related items

The early 1980s saw the increase in number of PO Philatelic counters across the country. By the late 1980s the powers that be in London had started to focus on the Sub-PO network as a means of pushing philatelic sales. Trials at a number of Sub-POs in 1989 lead to a national programme that lasted until around 1995.

1990s - Background information.

The results of the trials in 1989 were never published to my knowledge. It was evident that certain items lended themselves to promotion in the Sub-PO setting and the scope of items sent to promote stamp sales increases over the 1990-92 period.  Verbal communication with the relevant Heads of Department at the time would indicate that the cost and distribution of the publicity was not reflected in the increased sales needed to cover the costs. It was reported to me that it cost Royal Mail over £20 to produce the A2 sized screen printed plastic sheet that was intended to adhere to glass panels. Most were never used as space was not available for such a large item and they soon stopped. Apart from this A2 sized item all other items were A4 sized. Sub-PO continued to receive the standard A4 English +/- Welsh A4 posters as well. At the time Royal Mail was using the RMS (Royal Mail Stamps) pre-fix then the issue number and year and then a letter (a-n) to identify the poster. It is the "h"  "k" "l"&  "m"  post-fix  posters that were for Sub-POs.   The "h" poster was the same as the standard English poster (RMS*****a), but on thick card with a back mount for hanging or free-standing. The "k" poster was the A2  printed vinyl screen poster. The "l" poster was the same as theA4  RMS*****g poster normally used for overseas agents but with a blank reverse. The "m" poster was for a presentation pack rack. The poster was intended to slide into the back of the transparent plastic display or could be used as a poster.

Most of the commemmorative issues and greeting stamps were covered. Other booklets , definitves low/high value and Regional stamps were not always promoted. There were no Welsh language versions printed Nationally for Sub-PO.
