About the Team

The Pittsburgh Slide is a new entry into the table soccer landscape. The teams kit was modeled after team manager Jim Desmond's love of the now defunct Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Pittsburgh Spirit. The teams alternate third kit is modeled after Jim's favorite North American Soccer League (NASL) team, the Chicago Sting. The Sting was the NASL's final outdoor soccer champion in 1984.

About the Manager

Jim was introduced to the game of Subbuteo while he was a soccer player in area youth leagues. At the time he would get Soccer America weekly and Soccer Digest monthly. In the back of one of the Soccer Digest's there was an ad for Subbuteo. He had a hard time trying to get friends and soccer teammates to play the game, the Atari 2600 had just hit the market (that was another addiction of his). Through the years he did get in the odd game here and there. The game was finally put away sometime around 1988 only to be dug out and to be sadly placed on ebay in 2003. A search of ebay turned up over 30 pages with over 2000 Subbuteo items listed. This prompted a Google search of Subbuteo. Surprisingly, there he found the American Subbuteo Association (ASA).

Jim's soccer career started when he was about 11 years old. The township he lived in at the time had added soccer to their youth leagues. He enjoyed the game and quickly found that playing midfield was the place for him. Though he preferred playing right midfield, most coaches put him on the left side to counter the opponents attacks on their right flanks.

Playing soccer became an almost year round affair for him. During the fall he would play high school soccer, move over to indoor soccer for the winter months and back outdoors for the spring with youth traveling teams. During the summer, Jim would attend Pittsburgh Spirit soccer camps at Slippery Rock University. He was clocked with a shot speed at 74 mph, the second fastest time among the kids attending. His roommate was clocked with the fastest shot at 77 mph.

Due to the soccer camps and getting to know the players so well plus the high speed of indoor soccer, Jim fell in love with the Pittsburgh Spirit club. He attended almost every Spirit home game between 1983 and their final year in 1986. Of course he had dreams of playing for the team some day. Though the Spirit never won the MISL championship, they frequented the playoffs almost every year of their existence.

In his free time, Jim enjoys auto racing (NASCAR), bowling and of course Subbuteo.
