New Railway at Killaun

Bord Na Mona plans to have a new peat bog railway in operation at Killaun, near Birr in County Offaly, by late-2007. The line will be of 3ft gauge.

Rustons under threat

Bor na Mona's railways in Ireland are a last bastion of commercial operation of Ruston & Hornsby locomotives, albeit greatly rebuilt ones. There are now six Wagonmasters being fitted with new engines and transmissions at Boora works, to replace some of the remaining Rustons. Given a replacement ratio of at least 2:1, and probably 3:1, 2007 could be the last summer of extensive Ruston use. See the menu to the left for a page with photos of some of these beasts.

Of happier transports to be

These words are a line from a song, a prize of a photograph of a ten pound note will be forwarded to the first person to identify which song.

I added the words here because, to me, they form a suitable motto for the pursuit of narrow gauge railways, a happier form of transport than which, I cannot conceive of.
