Hi,

This is my first post.  I found your site while searching the net.  I am hoping for some help in finding the parents of Thomas Hodgetts.

Thomas was a second fleet convict to Australia.  I believe he was born C1761 in Aldridge Staffordshire.  Details of his crime are as follows:

Thomas was tried at Stafford Assizes (Market Hall) on 12 March 1788 with 4 other men on a charge of burglary. The indictment stated that these men broke and entered the house of Gilbert Houghton in Aldridge Staffordshire and took away a flitch of bacon worth the sum of 40 shillings. The crime took place at 3 in the night of Nov 15, 1787. Thomas Hodgetts and Thomas Collier were found guilty and sentenced to transportation for 7 years and it appears the other 2 men escaped conviction.

On 17 May 1788, age given as 24, Hodgetts was ordered from Stafford Goal to the "Lion" hulk, moored off Gosport near Portsmouth Harbour. There he was employed as a labourer on fortification works and was included in a list of the most useful and well behaved convicts on the hulk who were recommended to be held back from transportation. In spite of this he was embarked on the "Scarborough" transport on 19 November 1789.

In May 1789 the Home Office received a petition for mitigation of sentence on behalf of Hodgetts signed by the minister, church wardens and overseers of the parish of St Mary, Whitechapel (in east London), and by several residents of Whitechapel and Aldgate. They stated that his wife and three small children were in want of subsistence and were in deepest distress and if released he would be given employment. A petition of this kin was generally regarded as being motivated by a desire to reduce parish rates when the destitute family of a convict was settled there under the poor laws. The judge recommended against any mitigation commenting that witnesses had proved that Hodgetts and Collier had sold part of the stolen property to another man. They had escaped a capital conviction for burglary only because evidence relating to the time of the break-in had been defective. "It appeared to me", he wrote, "that the prisoners were part of a very bad set, and in a country which abounds with bad men, it would be a great Encouragement to housebreaking, if a slight punishment were to be inflicted."

In September 1789 Hodgetts lodged a second petition with the Home Office with a confession signed by Collier in which he stated that Hodgetts had not been concerned in the robbery, although he had been present when the stolen items were sold. The petition was attested to by the chief mate of the "Lion" hulk. No action was taken and Hodgetts was transported. His wife Harriet was one of a handful of convicts' wives who accepted the government's offer of a passage to the colony on the "Neptune". The fate of their three children is unknown. If they accompanied their mother they must have died on the voyage, as there is no record of them in the colony. If not they may have been left behind by their parents in the care of relatives in England.

Evidence suggests that he and Harriet (his wife) were married at the time of his conviction and that they had 3 children - Anne Hodgetts christened 30th June 1783 St Bartholomew, Wednesbury to Thomas and Ann Hodgetts - Thomas Hodgetts christened 8th September 1788 Wednesbury to Thomas and Ann Hodgetts - William Hodgetts christened 6th September 1790 Wednesbury to ?? and Ann Hodgetts. These could be the three children left in England. At the time William was christened Thomas senior would have be incarcerated perhaps resulting in the lack of a father's name in the christening records?

Thomas and Harriet were first in Sydney then Norfolk Island, back to Sydney then to Longford, Tasmania.  They had 11 children from 1791 to 1819.  Thomas' son John married Olivia Lucas (daughter of Olivia Gascoigne and Nathaniel Lucas - a well researched family).

There have been many family members trying to discover Thomas and Harriet's English ancestry...but no luck to this time.  I am hoping someone will be able to help.

Many thanks

Leeanne
