Program Schedule

Oct Drive

Celebrating National Red Ribbon Week at the W.I. Firehouse Union 309 Blvd, we reflect upon our continued commitment to healthy bodies and minds! Suffolk county children are depending on us to “pay attention “and “look after “their well-being. Traditionally, we spend this week providing for the children through 3 fun collections. Please spread the word. Forward and post our drive info everywhere. It doesn't have to cost a dime, so, everyone will have something to share!! Friends can put together simple costumes from dollar store props. We never have enough for everyone. The kids are happy with simple, homemade costumes. Past years, folks bought wands, tiaras and netted skirts (fairy princess) and Pirate hats and eye patches.  Get together a group of co-workers, neighborhood kids or the extended family after Sunday dinner (an excuse for a new family tradition!). Its great giving kids back to school clothes and sad not have enough costumes. We may not be able to change life’s circumstances for the children, but we can give them a happy, Halloween memory, a huggy bear to comfort them at a shelter and clothing for the new school year/ holiday season, to make them “feel special”! Please read on…
Program#1-Fill a decorated shopping bag with your best last year’s clothes to make a “new “wardrobe for the delight of another person your sex and size. Label the bag accordingly. Think “head to toe “and try to include a dress outfit for the holiday season.  Someone will feel cared for when you spend time and TLC preparing your donation! No trash bags filled with clothes in assorted sizes and sex. We don’t have the firehouse, or the volunteers long enough to sort. Everyone in the family can participate. Even ask the Grandparents, friends and co-workers to get involved! We also bring clothing to battered woman’s shelters! Please, hang a sign in your office. Ask me to email a flyer .Maybe add backpacks and school supplies.
Program #2 - It’s simple! Donate last year’s Halloween Costume!  Make simple costumes from inexpensive props at the dollar store! Parent won’t have money for a special costume that will bring   joy and memories to a child of the special Halloween you provided. Think about that!
Program #3 - If you can’t do the above, please put ribbon, candy and a note on a small stuffed animal. Folks of all ages in local soup kitchens love to know they are thought about! It will brighten someone’s day!!!Make candy bags!
No time for the above 3? Donate thru PayPal. We need supplies and Money for items folks need in between collections and outside the scope of our drives

Easter Basket and Spring Gift Drive

March21, Wednesday   Place: West Islip Fire Dept. 309 Union Blvd        Time 2:30 pm -5:30pm

We wish to provide at least 5000 needy children with a Holiday Basket or Spring Gift. Getting the family and friends together to fill the country baskets, pails, pocketbooks and tote bags  you have lying around with toys, stuffed bunnies, slippers, socks, grass, plastic eggs, candy and happy meal toys can be fun!

You can make a theme basket for a baby or with a specific character in mind. Children are especially delighted when you fill a gently used lunch box, backpack, or pocketbook with goodies. You may fill plastic bags or decorated lunch bags with treats. Plush animals should be cleaned, decorated with ribbon and holding a candy filled egg! Every gift should be sent in clean, decorated and ready for distribution.

Please participate on March 21, Some churches make family food baskets but we are the only organization on Long Island, that I’m aware of, that makes gift baskets for the kids.

The Helping Hands operates on no funds. It has become more challenging for me to meet the year round list of growing demands of our needy neighbors between drives on zero funds. Donations of candy, plastic bags in all sizes, and paper bags are needed. Maybe, you can put a box out for candy at your office.  Those of you, who are planning to help at the hall, bring your own scissors, tape, ribbon and a bag of candy. We have added a PayPal link, if you would like to donate but can’t make the drive. Please go to our web page to donate. http://www.freewebs.com/hhinwi/apps/donations/

Making this community celebration more complete, the Foster Grandparents of Suffolk County will be hosting a hospitality table for all the “hungry, hardworking volunteer bunnies, young and old! “The Helping Hands is all about Folks, of all ages reaching out and joining hands to “change the world thru kindness, 1 smile at a time”. We will surely, be instilling great values in our children of old fashioned respect and love for one another!

Thank you for being compassionate people.

Toy Drive 2017

The Helping Hands Toy Drive 2018 will be stored in the memories of all that attended on  Dec 6th  as a day where the community came together with wholehearted generosity  and enthusiasm to live the true  definition of Christmas Spirit.

I noted many of the same families continue to support Helping Hands children for 0ver 2 decades. There were many adults I knew as children from our schools that came because the “big Toy drive “was now a family tradition. So, many thanked me for continuing the program because they felt so good about giving to the local children we serve.

This year more new moms and children joined hands with us! It went so well that we finished decorating, sorting and counting up all the presents earlier than ever before. We served 22 charities. We met the needs of many local families... Organizations picked up and filled vans and trucks with gifts .My family all participated and made Santa visits too many homes, met needy folks on street corners and places of their employ. We went wherever we had to make sure Santa would be “’coming down the chimney Christmas morning”!  Together, we have made Christmas for 1000’s (yes 1000’s) of  Long Island children! What is special about all of you is that you help the same children year round, where giving matters most!

Thank you! Merry Christmas and to all a Blessed, Healthy, Prosperous Joyful 2018

27th Toy drive!

HELPING HANDS 27th ANNUAL NEW / Looks Like  Dec.5, Tues. from 2:30-5:45 p.m. at the West Islip Fire Dept., located at 309 Union Blvd.   Everyone is welcome to help! Please, bring your own scissors and tape!  Holding the drive after school, will allow an excellent opportunity for our children to drop off their donations and have a firsthand glimpse of how wonderful our community is, as we come together for all the precious, underprivileged children throughout Suffolk County! Scout troops and Religious Ed. classes are encouraged to come!  Last year, our kids gave over 6000 toys. I handed out many of your donations and was smiling for weeks, reflecting upon your generosity.  Every toy ended up in the arms of a child. Local charities, once again, are forecasting holiday donation lows. Please be generous, as you clean out those crowded closets. Please consider a donation on our PayPal link towards supplies and “special gift” requests the children make.   http://www.freewebs.com/hhinwi/apps/donations/ or you may email me directly at jengallozzi@optonline.net  Remember us when you holiday shop https://smile.amazon.com /

Many children will only receive your Holiday gift. If your toy is not new, it must be spotless.  The children line up to see Santa for their one special treat. When the toy is damaged or dirty they miss out until next year.  If you are not sure of a toys condition, please do not send it in. We can’t accept loose, “bottom of the toy box” type donations. We operate on zero funding and limited volunteers. We don’t even have the dollars to pay for the bags to throw “junky” stuff out. It is stressful for me to sort through mounds of undecorated loose or shabby toys Thankfully, 99% of the gifts donated  are new or like new  and a blessing for the children who receive them. The other 1% takes up the majority of our time to sort through.  That is frustrating.

Traditionally, we ask that every toy be cleaned and decorated with a ribbon, candy cane or a lollipop. Here are other suggestions: Dangle Happy Meal toys from a stuffed animal’s neck.   Give a doll’s hair a makeover.  Fill Backpacks and lunch boxes with assorted goodies. Stacks of children’s books are tied together with a ribbon and small toy.  Costume and sterling jewelry make great gifts for the older girls. Often they are overlooked. Goody bags are filled with extra bath and body samples.  Fill recycled gift bags with an assortment of presents for one child. label packages with the sex and age of the child.

The children feel worthy when we take the time to add these thoughtful touches!  Especially, when their own parents may be incapable of such simple tasks! Please bring the gifts in ready for distribution. I'm counting on you!

Thank you for all the Suffolk County lives you have touched.  I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely, Jennifer Gallozzi Pres./.Founder/Especially Proud Volunteer 1990-

P.S. Please no used games or Puzzles, unless you speak with me in advance. There is NO TIME TO CHECK FOR MISSING PARTS, SO THEY ARE OFTEN DISCARDED. Candy cane, trash bags and ribbon donations are graciously accepted!   Slippers and socks are desperately needed.  Holiday outfits are welcome! We also need decorated lunch bags!   Donating  Costco movie tickets for Tanger will make it possible for me to treat children to a holiday matinee, that may otherwise never experience this simple wonderful Christmas  memory !Think about donating them. Thank you for all the plentiful and generous donations to the Helping Hands in West Islip fall costume, wardrobe and huggy bear drive. The gifts are being distributed all throughout Suffolk County. It was such a joyous time as we got to see small and older children delight in getting treats ranging from a new pair of boots ,wardrobe, stuffed toy with a message an especially their costumes! I especially loved the memory of a mother” to be “receiving a helping hand from volunteers including a stork stuffed animal bringing a wardrobe and a car if it's a boy and a doll if it's a girl! Thank you for “making this happens”! Please remember our food; basket, PayPal donation and gift card drive November 3rd thru 13th and our 27th annual toy drive December 5, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the West Islip fire department 309 Union Boulevard. We are also collecting at Blink West Islip. West will be sharing food with Veterans and local families in need. Please be generous.

An Awesome Easter

Edit
June 14 Backpack school supply kids meals summer toys towels beach slippers

The Helping Hands 27th Easter drive must be described as AWESOME! From the moment 5 below unloaded 2 U hauls of gifts their customers purchased over several weeks to donate, to the excitement all the school age bunnies added by making sure every last egg, toy, treat and basket was touched by their loving hands to complete and beautifully fill 1000’s of decorated baskets for the love of a Long Island child! Five below and its customers are Awesome! Those showing up earlier in the day to unload 2, 15 foot trailers of gifts were AWESOME! I am “misty eyed” with joy when I think of the little brownies running over to me with a hug for “letting them help”! They are Awesome! Then The Youth Enrichment older kids were shouting” we love Easter” and proclaiming “we love helping the Helping Hands!” They are Awesome! The Foster grammies and one grampy provided a hospitality table for the bunny helpers and filled 100’s of eggs with left over “Christmas candy corn” donated by Chocolate works so, we could host numerous egg hunts on a zero budget on later days to follow. The grandparents thanked me for having the program and one Grammy declared “as long as they were living they would support our beloved Helping Hands” grass roots Program to help the kids! So, here we have the initial reason I founded the Helping Hands in 1990. After so many years and drives I had the delight of being reminded Giving is” Awesome” and definitely as satisfying as Receiving. Many moms and their now grown children gathered ready to help! Folks became dear to me over more than 2 ½ decades as we caught up on each other’s lives and families while working tirelessly to gather, trim, count and pack donations! They have been “Awesome” for so long! There are families, liaisons from schools, companies, and groups that continue to follow the program all year long. My liaisons are “AWESOME”! It wasn’t as much a surprise the 23 charities picking up 100’s of gifts for each of their beloved programs were excited to see what the volunteers accomplished for the love of their kids. It was Awesome to feel the joy of a job well done as more volunteers filled their vans and cars. Then there were the appointments with individual moms to give them gifts that were to be put out for their children Easter morning! “Awesome” dreaming about that! There were the little girls we fitted for Easter dresses one Mom collects year round for the girls! She’s “Awesome!” So, many egg hunts, jumping around with the little ones at different centers, taking time to hold a baby, trying to quiet some crying babies (not succeeding).. Still “Awesome” Seeing children smiling, handing out the baskets you created. “Awesome”! Some of them running away from their group as I was leaving and grabbing my husband’s legs and hugging me saying “Thank you! I love you!” Meeting a child on the steps of a center when I was going back to my car and a child recognizing me running over for 1 last hug for his prior gift “AWESOME”! Atlas, cheers to My “Awesome” husband who will take pictures, unload a van, dress up in costume, bounce a child on his knee, give a word of comfort to a mom and our 3 “Awesome” daughters whom I began the program for so they would be inspired in Giving over their lifetimes! My middle daughter collaborated with a coworker at AON Insurance to collect baskets and gifts and has kept up with the program throughout the year , the oldest in Healthcare also helps me collect and distribute through her contacts , and my youngest always pitching in year round whether it be delivering ,noticing folks that need assistance or using her computer skills. All 3 charging over to help at the firehouse after there long day and full time jobs show they are living their life, as I have exampled and that they wish to carry on the legacy of our family love of Long Island children by knowing “giving is something we do every day of the year and that together we can change the world thru kindness, 1 child’s smile at a time…..” Thank you. God Bless all of you and Happy Easter! You are all Awesome! Jennifer Gallozzi President / Founder and ESPECIALLY Proud Volunteer 1990-Helping Hands in W.I., Inc. The Helping Hands Fall Drive was a big hit. We filled the Firehouse with beautifully decorated Ward-robe bags, huggy bears and costumes. We have had so many “GIVING EVENTS” over the last 26 years. The first collection of the new school year is always met by the Helping Hands with hopeful anticipation that folks will once again stay tuned in for what Long Island kids need. The bleak economy has brought more and more families and charities to seek our assistance. It struck me and my family this year that in some ways the drive felt like “All HOME WEEK”. I say this because each year more and more of the same families have been relying on the generosity of our program (meaning all of you), year round to “make ends meet “.Many of the families are working class as opposed to in the 1990’s when they were lower income, unemployed…. One woman reminisced on how we met the day she left a battered womans shelter when her youngest of 6 was five .We gave her a TV, Sneakers (she had flip flops on in DEC.)Toys, and clothes .Now 5 years later she is working, smiling and still depending on our generosity to “stretch” her small paycheck. We are seeing moms whom children we have aided now seeking help for their grandkids then there was the lady whom reached out to me and said “My kids are grown, my daughter is in college, you made a difference in our lives and we all want to give back and help!” Many young people who once volunteered are grown with small kids, participating in our programs; some now, in careers are collecting in their places of employ. All this to say, we had our first drive of the new 2016/17 program schedule. We never know what will come in but we come to understand everyone will have some need met. An item they thought they couldn’t afford like a Wii with the TV and Games, A large print book for a senior in a home,a desperately needed coat and more often a hug and kind word with a stuff animal … I think the best gift we share is that they of feel accepted and cared about by friends in the community. In a world that can feel dark, cold and lonely Our Helping Hands reach in and give comfort for a day, a lifetime or whatever is needed? When we do this, those giving and those receiving equally leave our Helping Hands “giving events” all smiles!

We are now preparing for our Christmas Drive Dec 7 after school and Thanksgiving Drive Nov 11- 20 at WIFD 309 union in the dispatch office and at W.I.Blink Fitness, Please consider a donation on PayPal or on our face book page. HALLOWEEN COSTUME, BACK-TO-SCHOOL CLOTHES AND TEDDY BEAR DRIVE – Weds. OCT.19th  BY 9:30 am –Place: W.I. Fire Dept. 309 Union Blvd.

National Red Ribbon Week is approaching! It is a time to reflect on our continued commitment to healthy bodies and minds! Unfortunately, an increasing amount of Suffolk county children are depending on us to “pay attention “and “look after “their well-being. Traditionally, we spend this week sharing with them through 3 fun collections. Please spread the word, forward and post everywhere our drive information. It doesn't have to cost a dime, so, everyone can share something!! Your  friends can put together simple costumes from dollar store props. We never have enough. Kids are happy with simple, homemade costumes. Last year, a group of folks bought wands, tiaras and netted skirts (fairy princess) and Pirate hats and eye patches. So, Get a group you work with, the neighborhood kids or the extended family after Sunday dinner (an excuse for a new family tradition!). I feel great giving the kids the back to school clothes and sad when I don’t have enough costumes. We may not change the children’s’ life circumstances, but we can give them a happy Halloween memory, a huggy bear to comfort them at a shelter and clothing for the new school year and holiday season!

Program#1-Fill a decorated shopping bag with your best last year’s clothes to make a “new “wardrobe for the delight of another person your sex and size. Label the bag accordingly. Think “head to toe “and try to include a dress outfit for the holiday season.  Someone will feel cared about when you spend time and TLC preparing your donation! No trash bags filled with clothes in assorted sizes and sex. We don’t have the firehouse, or the volunteers long enough to sort. Everyone in the family, grandparents and fiends can participate. We also bring clothing to battered woman’s shelters!

Program #2 – Simply, donate last year’s Halloween Costume! Get a group together to make simple costumes. For a special   Halloween memory provided by you!

Program #3 - Put ribbon, candy and a note on a small stuffed animal. Folks all ages in soup kitchens/shelters love to know they are thought about! It brightens their day!

Program #4 donate thru https://smile.amazon.com/   or PayPal http://www.freewebs.com/hhinwi/apps/donations/ …It would help!

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS 2015
The Helping Hands Christmas drive had a phenomenal turnout...It began chaotic, when the Fire Dept. called to say the toy drive had to be moved to the garages because they were having an election. They moved the firetrucks out of the garages and there we stayed, till every last toy was ready for Santa's sleigh! Th e pictures can be viewed on this link   https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.534894363336569.1073741855.103080089851334&type=3

We worked around equipment, uniforms, and trailers...Despite the relocation confusion it ended up being “the most wonderful time of the year” for the Helping Hands drive, at the West Islip Fire Dept.!
The kids seemed to have extra joy and animation. Folks of all ages swarmed the garage; there was background music provided by the singing of a young boy from the Y.E. S. program, the foster grammas and grandpa spoiled the kids with cookies, drinks and praise.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more wonderful, families piled in a t 6pm to be assigned their personal Christmas elf to select items from Santa for their children. They picked coats from the Friends academy coat drive, were fitted with sweatshirts from an impressive young lady, her mom and  friend from Roslyn that collected heavy, sweatshirts all year that are basically in place of a favor at Bah mitzvahs all over their community. Children were fitted for their holiday dresses that a mom collected from New Beginnings preschool parents, all year long. Finally, Christmas elves helped parents select items from Santa for their children. Kids picked out bicycles, skateboards, kitchen sets, racetrack items and then we secretly packed them in their parent’s car for the sake of their surprise Christmas morning.
It didn’t matter whether we were in a school lobby, a cafeteria, a veteran’s hall, and my driveway, the main bldg. of a firehouse or now a garage. In fact Helping Hands has been in all those places over the last 25 years! It remains true that with all of you, me and the Helping Hands, we always find a way to reach out and cherish Suffolk County kids all year long, where giving matters most.
One of the centers that picked up toys for their children commented that he couldn’t believe how much every child was excited to march into the garage and donate their toys and to also work in Santa’s workshop. He said “I know you always bring our children gifts, but this is the first time, I have been to see you collect and prepare the gifts with Your Volunteers! I never thought about how happy the children were “giving” to our kids!” Wow, Proof positive “giving is better than receiving!”
Please, enjoy the pictures we posted and moreover, feel the satisfaction this holiday Season that comes with “helping to change a child’s life, with your simple gestures of love and caring, 1 smile at a time.”
I hope you and the family have a peaceful holiday season and something good happens to all of you in 2016! Why not!
Warmly, Jennifer Gallozzi

Celebrates Red Ribbon Week!       EIN #56-2437348     www.freewebs.com/hhinwi like us https://www.facebook.com/HelpingHandsInWestIslip

Tues. OCT. 27TH BY 9:30 am –Place: WI. Fire Dept. 309 Union Blvd (back)

Helping Hands is joining the National Red Ribbon Week Celebration. I have asked local families and charities to think about what their children need in the way of material tools and what we can provide to give their kids confidence and self-respect as they approach a new school year! This year’s national theme is “self-respect and self-confidence will lead to healthy choices and away from substance abuse.” What better way to develop respect and confidence than by helping other children?

The responses are in! Everyone wants us to keep up with the original items we collect in fall and also, provide snacks so kids in the afterschool tutoring programs or studying in their “kitchens” would concentrate better with a little “something, something” in their bellies! Please pick a Program!

DONATE SNACKS, WARDROBES, HUGGIE BEARS, COSTUMES, CASHOLA

1.      Fill a decorated shopping bag with your best last year’s clothes to make a “new “wardrobe for another person’s delight! Label bags accordingly (sex and size). Think “head to toe “! Try to include a dress outfit for the holidays.  No trash bags filled with assorted clothes, different sizes and sexes. We don’t have the firehouse, or volunteers long enough to sort. Ask Grandparents, friends and co-workers to get involved. We are low on teen XL boy clothes

2.     Donate last year’s Halloween Costume!  Make simple costumes from inexpensive props at the dollar store! Parents don’t have money for a special costume that will bring so, much joy to a child and a memory of the special Halloween you provided. Think about that!

3.     Put ribbon, candy and a note on a small stuffed animal. Folks of all ages in local soup kitchens love to know they are thought about!

4.     Lunch or party bags filled with a drink, snack for after school studying.

5.     Donate thru PayPal. We need supplies and $$ for items folks need in between collections and outside the scope of our drives. http://www.freewebs.com/hhinwi/apps/donations/

Giving in October!!! We made one of life's most memorable moments for Suffolk County kids!
WOW! I believe we were all overwhelmed by The Helping Hands spirit of giving, at the West Islip Fire Department today! The gifts were piled up! There were many, many Wardrobe bags, so beautifully decorated! We received boxes and bags full of healthy snacks for the afterschool tutoring programs! Then there was the multitude huggy bears and costumes. The volunteers and the community demonstrated the “spirit of Christmas” In October! This gives me encouragement and anticipation for the generosity our children will receive over the next several weeks, as we prepare for our Christmas Drive Dec 8 and Thanksgiving Drive Nov 14-16 at WIFD and at W.I.Blink Fitness the month of November. Thank you, from the bottom of my Heart. God Bless all of you and I hope something wonderful happens to each and every one of our Givers and recipients. Today, was truly a “Christmas like” gift, as wishes of the children to be remembered, all year long and not just around the holidays was realized!
Warmly, Jennifer Gallozzi

EASTER BASKET AND SPRING GIFT DRIVE 2014

Easter Basket and Spring Gift Drive

Caring for Long Island Kids, Easter 2014

The completed Baskets were so beautiful, The folks , young and old made sure every last egg, toy ,book, candy and assorted treat, was lovingly stuffed into a bag, box, basket, tote , lunchbox, pocketbook etc. for the smile of a child on Easter morning! I remembered the humble beginnings of an Easter Drive, from 23 years ago that started with a group of little girls(my own and their playmates), that happily filled a big box with gifts they proudly collected! Our "Helping Hands" are still, just as humble as, we prove everyday, that "giving is something we do with our hearts ,not our wallets", and ,together we will "change the world thru kindness , one child's smile at a time!" Thank you! God Bless you!(I can say that because, I may not get paid , but afterall, I am the President!) and Happy Easter ! Pictures of the kids will be downloaded as I continue the Bunny Trail
Please click the link to see pics of the drive and the folks we Blessed with your donations!

2013 toy drive -A SUCCESS!

If there was a theme, for the Helping Hands Toy Drive 2013 , it would be,  as it is written “you get double for your trouble”…The new school year brought new challenges for the well loved and respected Program of 23 years. Ten weeks ago, because we are all volunteers and lack any funding, we found ourselves without a “home” to host our drives! I decided to proclaim this as a “setback, geared towards a comeback!”! The West Islip Fire Department “stepped up” to host our Program Schedule and over the last 6 weeks, The Helping Hands boasted 3 “bigger than ever “ drives to cater to Suffolk Count’s “poorest of poor” !The pinnacle of our community’s success in giving and sharing was reached at our Dec 4th toy drive. One challenge, was hoping that folks would follow us to the fire department. This past year, we proved together, that the Helping Hands legacy of Loving, Caring and Sharing for each other was not bound by Hurricanes, a poor economy or the change of drive venue. As a young mom, back in 1990, my dream was, that with the  support  of my husband Robert and my 3 daughters Jaime , Jodie ,and Jannah  (the 3 J’s!) I could create a program for children to share their own belongings with other less fortunate kids all year long! All Our children would be enriched by this program, as they developed empathy and compassion in their early, impressionable childhood years. It wouldn’t cost   parents a dime, so, their kids could easily participate and without even, having to leave the house! The home is truly where all good values begin!  The benefit on the receiving end of the equation was more obvious!

I am proud we reached a point in our community where folks “Giving” and folks that would be “Getting” at the drives completion, worked side by side preparing gifts for distribution. We were one in the same, on Dec. 4 at the Helping Hands Toy Drive. I smiled proudly, with admiration for all of you, as I continue to be  touched by your compassion for Suffolk County children all year round “where Giving matters most”.. We are changing the world through kindness, one smile at a time! God Bless all of you and Merry Everything!

Please view pictures of our drive on this link where as we are out of "free web space" on this website!

SANDY AND TURKEY DAY

Thank you for the plentiful donations you provided for the Helping Hands hurricane Sandy and Thanksgiving Drive.

The blankets were especially beautiful expressions of the genuine concern the Stoneybrook University community had for our folks. . My daughter is a graduate of Stoneybrook, as ,is the youth director of the Y.E.S. program that many of them went to.The social worker who picked up the assorted "practical "items our local families needed ,also ,commented on how beautiful they were. They were and added treat and many families that were displaced or relocated into friends and families homes during this crisis will have something soft and comforting to call their own. They were also

Distributed to homeless folks in Huntington and Wyandanch etc. . . . I know we gave them to some folks to lay on instead mattresses for the time being!

I must say, one single mom commented on how pleased she was to have a box of cleaning products and a mop to help with the mess Sandy left her. She had a boat; sink and hot tub wash up on her property! Another Mastic Beach woman lost her closet full of clothes and all of you came through for her. Then there was the man from the Rockaways who came with his daughter and needed a coat. People came from far and wide needing and no one was turned away and everyone left smiling! A Red Cross Truck even showed up!!The enthusiasm I witnessed by all of you was thrilling for me! We gave many of your donations of blankets clothes and cleaning supplies to Bayshores Suburban Housing which caters to Homeless folks between Bayshore -Riverhead and then some. Gerald Ryan Outreach in Wyandanch with almost 2000 clients was equally appreciative. Bayshore Headstart benefited also form your generosity...I can go on.

I am a full time volunteer in an organization I started 22 years ago for my very young children. I hoped to raise their awareness and compassion for others from the very start of their young lives. I was having a food drive anyway last Wednesday. In fact, we were grateful when Tattoo Lou’s "stepped up" to sponsor a food drive for us!
It was only natural for us to also, recruit Sandy relief. Wednesday's drive was a true testimony to how Long Islanders stand up for each other in a crisis! The Helping Hands is somewhat unique because it services folks year round on zero funding, as, we believe "giving is something we do every day of the year"!

I was overjoyed to witness the out pouring of love people showed for each other. I am so pleased to have worked with all of you. I will use this memory to encourage more "Helping Hands" in our mission to "change the world through kindness 1 smile at a time!"

God Bless all of you and God Bless Long Island!

Sincerely, Jennifer Gallozzi President/Founder and especially Proud Volunteer of the Helping Hands in West Islip Inc . . . . THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY DRIVE - WEDS, NOV. 14 ,BY 9:30 am -

Canned goods, turkey certificates and pantry items, complete holiday food baskets (no turkeys please, just certificates), HOMEMADE BAKED GOODIES, AND CENTERPIECES.

We are in desperate need for Thanksgiving donations. Since Helping Hands services folks year round, some of you may opt out of the holiday giving and instead choose to give to your local church, school or place of employment. Still, helping hands families are still at the mercy of our generosity. Please, reflect on that a moment and  donate a turkey coupon, gift certificate, $$,or food basket .I thought that maybe if some of you did not have a turkey coupon or can goods to donate, you might consider dropping off a dessert (cookies, pie, brownies etc.) to delight a local family. I will be happy to give the students community service hours for this gesture of caring! I also, will be happy to accept any type of a homemade centerpiece to decorate a holiday table. I feel these are hard times and we need to find “creative” ways of showing each other we care! Giving doesn’t have to cost a dime!
