According to the 1900 Federal Census of the Wilson Creek District of Grayson County, Grandmom was ten years old and living with her parents, David and Rhody Blevins. Knowing that information is only as good as the giver and the receiver, there may be discrepancies with this data. David and Rhody's children are listed as:
a. Marion, 16, born June, 1883.
b. Thomas, 14, born March, 1886.
c. Caldonia (Aunt Doan), 11, born March, 1889.
d. Mary, 10, born March, 1890.
e. Jane, 6, born June, 1893.
f. Wiley, 4, born June, 1895.
Caldonia was Lee Comer's wife. Her first name was Lura and she was born March 1, 1888, according to my records. Grandmom was the next oldest daughter and her birthday was Oct. 10, 1892, according to the Social Security file and her death certificate. I was never aware of any children named Jane or Wiley. ~~~~~ Mary E. Comer, wife of the late Charles G. Comer, died on Saturday, Sept. 6, 1969, at 5 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William C. Brackins of Churchville, after a lingering illness. Dr. Willard P. Hudson was the attending physician. A son, Joe, served as the informant for the death certificate.
Also known to many as "Aunt Did" or "Did"
, Grandmom was a homemaker. She had long black hair that she usually wore in a braid on top of her head. She had Cherokee blood in her which was reflected in her hair, high cheekbones, and sharp facial features. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Hickory, Md. She is survived by four sons, William Harry Comer, Sr., of Havre de Grace, Joseph D. Comer of Churchville, Wiley Cleve Comer and Marion G. (Jack) Comer of Bel Air; three daughters, Clara W. Kreiss and Ruby Waltermyer, both of Stewartstown, Pa., and Ruth Brackins of Churchville; twenty-one grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Marion Blevins, Marion, Va.
Funeral services were held on Sept 9th from the Foster Funeral Home, Bel Air, with Rev. Dewey G. Rhodes and Rev. Buford Hash officiating. The pallbearers were six grandsons; Walter Wiley Comer, Charles Glen Comer, John Douglas Waltermyer, Robert Brackins, Richard and Edward Kreiss.
Foster Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
