AUSTR HOFN DARK AGE GUILD

WELCOME

Focusing on the historical time period of 700-1065AD, Austr Hofn Dark Age Guild is a group of people interested in Dark Age History and the re-enactment of that particular time frame.  Based in Coffs Harbour, our members come from the city and surrounding areas to take part in our various activities.

Although we have weapons training and combat for interested members, we have many other activities that would appeal to most people who are looking for something different to participate in.

eg. The production of authentic clothing and other equipment, historical research, archery, various craft eg loom weaving, lucet, naalbinding, leather work and other craft work), re-enactment,  cooking, camping, entertainment

                  ---------------------------------------------------------

ABOUT US

We are a group of like-minded people, which is essential in our group, as much of what we do centres around the time frame of 700 - 1065AD and it helps immensely to be ‘on the same page’ - with a love for not only the all important socialising together as friends, but also for re-enactment, an interest in the history of the time frame, and for working together as a team.

Our clothing, chain mail, shields, tents and many of our other items have been made by members of the group. This has involved research into the areas of history pertaining to our era as we try to  stay close to authenticity as possible, as well as the practical aspects of actually making items.

As it is difficult for us to put up permanent structures, we use tents and camp areas and therefore class ourselves more as an ’encampment’ than a village. Our encampment still allows us to have traders of various kinds, entertainers, craftsmen, warriors and any other ’trade’ that would normally be found in a culture of those times we reenact.

Clothing
Our clothes are pretty basic. Tunics, trousers, cloaks, shoes/boots, arming caps, hoods, belts for the men ; and for the women long dresses, headgear (varies with which persona is chosen), shoes, cloaks, belts. Each historical time frame has its own style of clothing and if you join us as a member, it is mandatory that  you work on getting your garb together  as soon as you can to be able to take part in any gatherings with other reenactors and/or public performances that may come up.

One of the nice things about our group is that ‘those who can’ will help and teach ‘those who can’t’.

We use natural fabric when we can. Fabric, for our time frame, would have consisted mainly of pure linen and pure wool, When buying the material, we check  out the sales in Spotlight, garage sales, op shops or send away for our fabric on line.

There is the old saying, ‘When in doubt….ask’ that we all take advantage of. Someone in the group will always be available to help where they can.

Weapons Training

We are happy to encourage both male and female members to train to fight, if they so wish.

We have weapons training and archery. For safety reasons, we wear chain mail, gauntlets and helmet etc. for protection

We have weapons training and archery. For safety reasons, we wear chain mail, gauntlets and helmet etc. for protection Steel swords are heavy and sometimes a bit cumbersome to wield, and along with wielding steel swords comes the extra burden  of wearing chain mail, gauntlet and helmet for protection.  (Take out)

The swords we use are all blunted steel recreations of medieval weapons., and even though blunted can still pack a wallop on someone, so the blows are ‘pulled’. Safety has to be first and foremost in any group that  includes any sort of body contact ‘sport’.  As we do not have a blacksmith with a forge, our weapons and helmets have all been bought  - once again with authenticity and safety in mind. (take out)
During the cooler times we are happy to encourage both male and female members to train to fight, if they so wish. We have sword training and staff/ stave training (take out and put in Archery).

For a training period (can vary depending on the ability of the trainee)  it is required that the trainee uses padded training swords and padded staves. This, of course, is for safety reasons.
