Catherine Edmunds

Novelist and Poet

'Cathy Edmunds Music' is a music teaching service Catherine runs from her home in Bishop Auckland. She provides individualised lessons for pupils of all ages and abilities in violin, viola, piano and theory.

Catherine obtained her BA (Hons) degree in music at Dartington College of Arts where she specialised in performance and composition and studied violin with Colin Sauer (Dartington String Quartet), viola with Keith Lovell (Dartington and Allegri Quartets) and baroque violin with Catherine Mackintosh (Academy of Ancient Music). After graduation, she spent a year at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies at Goldsmith's College, during which time she studied violin with Ralph Holmes and worked with many eminent conductors including Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Groves, Sir Simon Rattle, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Catherine has performed widely as a freelance musician with groups such as the North Pennines Chamber Orchestra and the Avison Ensemble as well as being in regular demand for theatre work at Newcastle Theatre Royal, Sunderland Empire, Darlington Civic Theatre, Billingham Forum, etc. She also spent many years as both first violinist and viola player with Cameo String Quartet, playing for weddings and other functions.

Catherine has worked as a peripatetic instrumental teacher for local authorities in Barnsley, North Yorkshire, Tees Valley and Durham. She is a great believer in inclusiveness, and whilst in Durham successfully introduced violin lessons into schools for children with severe learning difficulties. Her private practice is thriving, with pupils of all ages and abilities enjoying their lessons and progressing well. Those who are keen to do exams are prepared for formal ABRSM examinations, but no pressure is ever put on anyone to take this path.
