What is a doula?
A birth doula is a professionally trained childbirth assistant who sees the mother throughout her pregnancy, labor and after birth to provide emotional, physical and informational support. I am your birth advocate, here to work with you and for you to help you achieve the birth you envision, a birth to remember.
What a doula is NOT:
She does NOT replace the mother's partner, but is available to provide support to them in addition to the laboring mother.
She does NOT perform clinical tasks and is NOT considered a health care professional.
She does NOT make medical decisions for you. She will help you get the information you need to make your own informed decisions.
She WILL NOT speak to medical staff regarding matters where health care decisions are being made. She is happy to discuss your concerns with you and suggest options.
She does NOT expect you to go without pain medication if this is what you desire. She may encourage you to try other pain relief methods prior to accepting pain medications, but realizes they may not work for everyone.
She is NOT just for a first time mom. A mom birthing her second, third, or even tenth child can still reap the benefits of having a doula present.
Why use a doula?
According to childbirthconnection.org, utilizing a doula can result in:
26% reduction in c-section rates
33% reduction in negative birth experience
28% reduction in need for epidural
41% reduction in use of forceps
What areas do I service?
I attend ALL births--vaginal, planned cesarean, VBAC, home, water. Currently I am serving patients who will be delivering at their home (with a midwife or OB present) or at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, located on the Eastern Shore in Salisbury, Maryland.
