Nalchik

Kabardino-Balkaria

Nalchik. Kabardino-Balkarian Republic of Russia

альчик. Кабардино-Балкария

Situated in southern Russia, this City along with its varied countryside is definitely worth discovering.

This is my own personal experience of this beautiful area with its rich and varied countryside which I hope you will find interesting and useful.

Nalchik can be reached by a 2 hr 20 mins flight from Vnukovo airport in Moscow. Nalchik is approximately 1500 km in distance south of the Russian capital. The city is at an altitude of 550 m and is located in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains. Arrived in a classic Yakovlev 42 aircraft to the small airport at Nalchik. What an experience in comparison to flying in your everyday commercial airliner.

Immediately if you have never visited Russia before, you notice that the infrastructure and roads can look a little under maintained in outer parts of this city. To me some parts seemed like they were left as they were in the late 1960's era.

Plenty of traffic with the roads seemingly filled with that old favourite car, the Lada Zhiguli. Transport is very cheap, just a few rubles on one of the trolley buses or the many mini buses they have around the centre. The centre based around the Presidential Palace has some lovely parks and gardens. There is also the large ornate square in front of the Palace with its fountains and giant statue of Lenin. See the calender garden created from flowers and shrubs which changes every day or walk along the boulevard style streets with its boutiques and shops. The centre has a very large market where you can buy absolutely anything, great atmosphere and a chance to taste some of the great regional dishes prepared fresh while you wait. The vegatable and fruit market has such abundance of colours and smells, I wanted to try everything.

Nalchik is surrounded on three sides by vast mountains one of which being the highest peak in Europe, Mt Elbrus 5642m. At certain times of the day depending on how clear the sky is, the view can be dramatic. From the outer parts into the countryside you can't help noticing snow capped mountains surrounding this area but the view is even more breathtaking from the city. The City also has a wonderful pleasure park where you can stroll through the gardens, visit the zoo, funfair or ride the cable car to the high vantage point at the top of Mt Kizilovka where you can enjoy the panoramic views. There is also a very established restaurant under the giant head of Sosruko, who is a symbol of strength for this region. Within the park is a novel barrel shaped bar or you can enjoy one of the many barbeques that are available.

Unlike the popular tourist areas of Russia, Nalchik still appears untouched adding to the experience of living alongside the locals with its very own charm.

Sorry but I have removed my guestbook and thank all those that showed an interest.

Thank you for looking and enjoy!
