A P McCoy
Nothing I can say here could possibly do this man justice. Bursting onto the UK scene in 1994-95 when he was champion conditional jockey with 74 winners he has been champion jockey ever since keeping a whole generation of jockeys off the top spot. He has ridden over 4,000 winners (4,214 winners in the UK and 143 in Ireland). A phenomenon ! And he won the National at the fifteenth attempt and rightly won the BBCs Sports Personality of the Year with a whopping 46% of the vote. Won twenty consecutive jockeys titles. Shocked the racing world with the announcement of his retirement in February 2016 and bowed out at Sandown in April 2016. (I was there) - the greatest jockey I have ever seen and I will not see his like again. Further reading : McCOY THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY (Tony McCoy with Steve Taylor) Penguin Books 2002

Only National winning jockey to my knowledge who spent time in prison (following an incident on a plane flying back from the Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan in 2002). Few would have thought it possible for him to resurrect a career which whilst showing immense promise had been blighted off the track by alcoholism. That he has done so helped by his retainer to leading jumps trainer David Johnson is nothing short of remarkable. 1,132 winners so far with a best season being 142 winners from 693 rides in 2004-05. Didn't ride again over jumps after dislocating his shoulder in January 2014. Announced in May 2015 that he had taken out a flat licence and had his first rides on the level at Brighton. Rode 62 winners on the level and announced his retirement after steering Happy Escape to victory at Chepstow in May 2018.

Probably the best English jump jockey of the nineties. Never seen without a smile on his face (except perhaps when unseated from Space Trucker at Cheltenham in 1997 from which he suffered a badly broken wrist which effectively ended his career). He announced his retirement just before the 1999 Grand National meeting. Rode a total of 808 winners in the UK and also rode Flashing Steel to win the 1996 Irish Grand National. Became a flat trainer on retirement. Milk It Micks win in the 2003 Dewhurst Stakes has been his biggest success so far.

Grand National record : One ride 1995 Camelot Knight (fell 21st)
Rode 126 winners in Ireland in 2007-08 but it wasn`t enough to be champion jockey which I think must be a record. Perhaps it is poetic justice that he won his first Irish Championship in 2011-12 with 104 winners and just pipped Ruby Walsh by 2 to win his second a year later. He has ridden 1,223 winners in Ireland and 114 in the UK. Was Irish champion again in 2017-18 with 119 winners and won the National at his fourteenth attempt.
