I have been teaching After School Band since the 2000-2001 school year.
My objective is for the students to learn to play an instrument in a fun and interesting environment.
My goal is to choose music that the students want to play and practice (and I want to hear!) I'm proud to expose the children to a variety of music from different cultures and genres. We play movie themes, and music from many cultures as well as music written specifically for elementary bands.
I want to challenge my class, but not overwhelm them. I try to instill good habits, without nagging relentlessly about their bad habits. I hope that they will rejoin band in 5th grade and 6th grade and continue playing in junior high, and high school and even college.
I started playing flute in 4th grade in a program that was not that different from After School Band. I was given the opportunity to switch to baritone horn in my sophomore year of high school. I learned to play trombone when I started teaching after school band and that is now my main instrument.
I currently play trombone with Big Band Jazz in Milpitas. (I am the female trombone player in the video.) We have played at Santana Row, the Alameda County Fair, various local Art and Wine festivals, and the San Jose Jazz Festival. I've played with this group since 1996.
