Abbey Light Railway

The Official Website of the Abbey Light Railway, Kirkstall, Leeds

Peter Lowe, owner of the Abbey Light Railway, sadly passed away in October 2012. For various reasons the railway was unable to continue operating without him. Therefore, the whole thing has been removed and sold during February and March 2013. Every part of Peter's collection has gone to a good home.

The Abbey Light Railway will never be fogotten, but now only lives in history books. Little, if any, trace of it remains at Kirkstall at the time of writing.

Thank you to everybody who has supported us during the 35 years of operation, and apologies for an inconvenience caused to anybody planning a visit.

The Abbey Light Railway was a privately owned 2-foot gauge railway running for a quarter of a mile from the depot on Bridge road, through scenic woodland into the grounds of the historic Kirkstall Abbey.

Public passenger trains operated on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays 1:00 - 5:00pm (weather and passengers permitting) throughout the year, hauled by a vintage industrial diesel locomotive.
