Louis Lugo

Trombonist, Musician

Louis Lugo is a native of West Palm Beach, Florida and is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Florida State University pursuing a Doctor of Music in Trombone Performance. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Jacksonville State University, and a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from Florida State University. Lugo has been teaching privately since 1997. His students have won top chairs in All-District, and All-State bands in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama

His teachers include John Drew, Jim Roberts, Tom Brantley, Roy Pickering, and Michael Harp. Additional studies include teachers such as Scott Hartman, Stephan Sanders, and Nitzan Haroz. In addition, he has performed in master classes by Doug Yeo, Thomas Bacon, Colin Williams and Joseph Alessi. As an arranger, he has works of trombone choir music published through Kagarice Brass Editions.

As an educator, Lugo assisted in the instruction of the perennial Bands of America Finalist Kennesaw Mountain High School Marching Band. Furthermore, he was Brass Caption Head for Division III Court of Honor Drum and Bugle Corps in 2004, and led them to an undefeated finish in brass. In 2005, he served as Brass Caption Head for Division II Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps, and finished third in the Division II brass standings. Also, Lugo is an adjudicator for the Central States Judging Association.

As a performer, Lugo was former Principal Trombone for the Palm Beach Atlantic Symphony. He was the winner of the First Annual Palm Beach Community College Solo Competition and was awarded Honorable Mention at the 2006 MTNA Solo Competition. In addition, Lugo was a musician at The Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. He has performed with the Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, the Albany Symphony Orchestra (GA), the Florida Philharmonic, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Tallahasse Symphony Orchestra and has acted as a freelance trombonist in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Currently, Lugo holds the chair of Principal Trombone for the University Symphony Orchestra at Florida State University, plays Lead Trombone in FSU's Jazz I, Second Trombone for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Trombone for Sinfonia Gulf Coast from Destin, FL. In addition, he is Conductor of the Florida State University Trombone Choir.
