S.W.A. Wiffle Ball

Best Wiffleball League in Southern Illinois

Season Opener-June 8th 2008

The season opener of the new and improved S.W.A. turned out to be a great success with 3 games being played on Common Field 2.  We saw flashes of brillance with many web gems, towering home runs, and dirty strikeouts.  Jon Lanter returned to the S.W.A. after a 2 year retirement, and showed signs of his old self, but also looked rusty at times too.  Comeback player of the year Mike Moriarty hit two bombs in his S.W.A. debute and hes ready to show the world what hes made of.  The sweet-swinging lefty had this to say, " When it comes down to it, I think the Rookie Sensations(Josh and Mike) have a great shot to go deep into the playoffs this year." Once Again Matt Salanik showed he could be the best all-around player in the S.W.A., with 6 home runs and a nice preformance on the mound.  Kyle Uhlmansiek displayed that one day very soon he could be an ace on the mound, and a excellent hitter.  Zach DeVore had an off- day on the hill, but still managed to get 7 K's, he is also tied for second in the home run race with 4 bombs.  Josh Hoguet looks like the early season favorite for rookie of the year, if not MVP.  He battled through the wind to go 2-0 and get 17 K's, he also helped out with the offense by hitting 4 dingers.  Overall it was a great day of wiffleball, check out the stats and the standings page, the pictures will be on facebook, and maybe a couple videos on youtube.

Hella-People on Saturday

It looks as if were goin have approx 20 or so ppl coming on saturday, that would kick ass.

If we get that many i think we'll do 3 on 3 and maybe 5 innings insteand of the normal 2 on 2 7 innings, just so everybody gets some playing time.

2nd Season Almost Over

After going 1-1 on their 16th and 17th games of the year the Expos decided to forfeit the rest of their games and get ready for the playoffs. The Illini have only 1 game left and it would make sense for that game to be against CMS because they have 3 games left to play before the post season starts. The Nightmares final game looks like it will be against CMS also. It's gonna be a heated hunt for the number 1 seed in the playoffs.

First really good night game

The Nightmares beat the Illini August 17th 9-6 on the tennis courts to mark the first night game where you could see every part of the field. The fences were tall and the distance from home to the outfield fences was short so everything was pretty much fair.

S.W.A. announces big plans for S.W.A. Bowl

The S.W.A announced Sunday that game 1 of the S.W.A. Bowl will be televised*. The plan for Game 1 is to be played in the late afternoon or early evening and then to have fireworks sometime after the game. All the season awards will be handed out after the game. There is a rumor that pizza will be avilable from the concession stands. Here is the cost of tickets - bleacher seats are free and so are party suite tickets. The game is scheduled to be played at the DeVore Dome, but the Home team can move the game to the Common Field or any other eligible field.

*The game will be televised if we can find a good video camera and a T.V. station that will brodcast the game.

Matt pitches CMS to wins

Matt Saliank shut down the first place team in the S.W.A. and CMS set a record for the longest winning streak at 10 games. One on looker said that CMS "looked like a different team out there". They were 2 hard losses for the Nightmare, who stay in first place because their winning % is 2 points higher than CMS's. It will be a close race heading into the playoffs for 1st and 2nd place.

Just to let you know

I'm gonna be gone 8-3 to 8-10, so if you guys play any games let me know in the guestbook.

In other news Zach Devore set an S.W.A. record wednesday, pitching back to back shutouts. The final score for both games was 1-0.  Also both games were decided by clucth 7th inning hits by Mike Snyder. Mike made a guest apperance for the illini as they played Matt Saliank and Andy McCrarry.

Did you know?

That the nightmare are the tenth best team in the nation.

And CMS is 47, but their record is wrong.

The Race for MVP

By Tim Kurkijan

The end of the year is almost here and that means it's time to get ready to vote for the MVP, Cy young, gold glove, and lvp. Zach asked me to do an article about potential MVP winners, being the big S.W.A. fan that I am I couldn't turn it down. What I did was picked one player from each team who could win MVP

Nightmare

Matt Weiler -Young Matt Weiler is looking for his back to back MVP awards with another great season. He is leading the league in Home runs and has the best pitching record in the S.W.A.

CMS

Matt Saliank- Matt has been CMS's leader so far this year and has put up more great numbers in the power cataories this year too. Most of the time he will be able to give you a great game on the mound.

Illini

Zach DeVore- At this point, if Zach were to win MVP,  it would be for his pitching. He has more than 10 K's each of his last 4 starts. He has became one of the top young guns in the S.W.A.

Expos

Ben Donjon - Ben has a chance at MVP, but it would be like winning the lottery. A disappointing season for the Expos to say the least. The good news is they have six games to turn it around.
