Welcome!

Thanks for dropping in!

On November 11, 2004, I gave a Brownbag Presentation to students and faculty at IDCE. I'm attaching a zipped copy of the PowerPoint here: ZFeris_Brownbag.zip

This site is more of an archive now, providing detail on my work and research in Ecuador. If you're looking for more recent updates on what I'm up to, visit my home page by clicking here: http://freewebs.com/zferis

This site serves two functions:

1). Throughout my time in Ecuador, from May 15 - July 15, 2004, I uploaded text and photos periodically, in the form of an online journal - detailing thoughts and experiences during my independent research and internship with CARE-Ecuador.

2). Since my access to Internet was limited during this time, I was not able to post News & Updates as often as I would have liked. Nevertheless, this was a great form of expedient mass communication.

My sincere apologies for the impersonal, but necessary nature of this method of communication. Feel free to provide feedback by e-mail anytime at zferis@yahoo dot com. I'll do my best to respond quickly!

To access the News & Updates, click on the dates listed to the left.

Saludos,

Zach Feris

The original plan...

  • May 16, 2004 - Arrive Quito, Ecuador. A close friend from my Peace Corps days is working as a Crisis Corps volunteer there now, coordinating HIV/AIDS prevention programs. She has graciously agreed to put me up for a few days while I gather my senses and make my initial contacts with USAID, US Embassy folk and the like.
  • May 23, 2004 - Depart for Macas - an Amazonian city to the SE of Quito.
  • Soon after - meet with CARE-Macas staff and get settled in; look for homestay; discuss internship details
  • Begin internship & research
  • August 14, 2004 - Depart Quito, Ecuador for USA

In actuality...

All of the above actually happened, except... I was able to return home early... by July 17, 2004, in order to attend my grandpa's wedding in Kansas! Great fun! My internship is now complete and my field research finished. I presented my research to students & faculty at IDCE, Clark University on November 11, 2004. Data analysis and reading continued well into March 2005. Finally, all of this culminated in my Masters paper for IDCE, which I finished March 25, 2005. Bound copies of my paper are on shelf at IDCE and in Clark's main library.
