Youth Weekend West was started in 2003 by a group of young Scottish Country Dancers from Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia. They wanted to bring together young dancers from all over western North America for a really great weekend, and this tradition has continued every year since then.
The first Youth Weekend in 2003 was held in the West Point Grey area of Vancouver, BC!
Youth Weekend West 2004 was held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
In 2005, YWW returned to Vancovuer, this time taking place at the University of British Columbia.
2006 saw young dancers flocking to Victoria, BC, for the fourth installment of Youth Weekend West.
The Scottish Country dance club of Western Washington University in Bellingham once again hosted the event in 2007.
In 2008 we returned to the West Point Grey area of Vancouver, the same location where the first Youth Weekend West was held. Also, for the first time ever Youth Weekend East took place at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario.
2009 will see Youth Weekend West heading to the San Francisco Bay area of California for the first time, which should be very exiting for everyone.
Youth Weekend West has had consistently good attendance, with almost 70 participants in 2007. The age of participants has usually been listed as 15-30, but previous participants have ranged in age from 11 to 37. Youth Weekend West is organized and run by young dancers on a completely non-profit basis.
