My Top 5 YB Films
1:
Righting Wrongs
Full on 80's cheese a great showcase for Corey Yuen as a modern day action
director and Yuen as an action lead, this shows Yuen's abilities to the
best (in one movie) great fight scenes dark moments and Cynthia Rothrock
kicking ass what more does a movie need?
2:
Prodigal Son
One of the first period kung fu movies i ever saw Yuen is superb the end
fight is great and always praised but the ones leading up to it are just
as great Sammo Hung does us proud as director and is just as agile in
his role a must see mish mash of genres, comedy, traditional martial arts,
peking opera and drama.
3:
On The Run
A very underrated movie from Yuen's back catalogue less about MA more
about drama and flashes of action (mostly gunplay) this is a very gritty
tale and lets Yuen stretch his acting muscles he does so very well and
its a pity it didn't do better it would have been nice for him to have
done more roles like this.
4:
Knockabout
A great classic piece of kung fu some prefer it to Prodigal Son but PS
has fond memories to me which may explain this being lower on my list
still a must see a young Yuen in his prime shown at his old school best.
5:
Icemen Cometh
One of Yuen's biggest hits without Jackie or Sammo and co starring Maggie
Cheung and Yuen Wah a little cheesy and dated sure but extremely entertaining.

About Me
Getting
Into the genre:
I have been watching Asian movies for many years it started when i was 7
or 8 and my Uncle showed me a copy of Fist Of Fury it blew me away id never
seen anything like it the style, the action, it really impressed me. After
that each sunday i would drag my Father to the video store and rent any
film that looked like that, including the rest of Bruce Lee films (and some
imitators) also movies of b grade American action stars like Rothrock, Norton,
and Van Damme and a few Ninja movies most of the Asian movies had the most
appalling english dubbing but as i was young (and shouldn't have really
been watching them i blame the responsible adults though he he) and to lazy
for subtitles "i don't want to read a movie i want to watch it"
was my attitude, shortly after these movies i got tired, the only ones i
could get were slow american action martial art flicks with really poor
production values. But a few years on we moved and used another video store
and there was a large section of all these other people one that stuck out
was called Jackie Chan the first one i rented was actually New Fist Of Fury
directed by Lo Wei the only reason for renting it, was the original Bruce
Lee film being my introduction into this wonderful genre, it's fair to say
i was less than overwhelmed but decided to give this Jackie bloke another
try and rented one that look slightly newer it was called Police Story talk
about finding a good movie to restore my faith it made me speechless here
was a film that blended not only Martial Arts but comedy, drama and stunts
as well from then every sunday i rented every JC film i could get my young
hands on. As i got older i bought most of Jackie Chan's and Bruce Lee's
movies on VHS. Jackie was still unknown here and no one knew who i was on
about. From watching these tapes i was introduced to other stars Sammo Hung
and of course Yuen Biao when i was coming up to leaving high school a new
label started called Made In Hong Kong releasing videos of many stars in
the original Cantonese dubs and re mastered subtitles, these were the best
thing ever for me at the time and i got into more genres Heroic Bloodshed,
Drama and Battling Babes or Female Fatale movies and found lots more stars
Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and more these were the
best things ever until dvd's came along maybe 2 years after leaving high
school and another company started Hong Kong Legends releasing re mastered
movies with dual language and extras a fans dream and the best dvd's ever
(and still are I'm still like a kid when I'm waiting for the latest to arrive)
by now id gone onto this World Wide Web and was able to import movies from
Hong Kong, China, Japan and elsewhere which opened up more stars and the
ability to buy back catalogues of my favourite stars like Yuen Biao in original
cuts, now a few years later again I'm still buying them and thank my uncle
for that first glimpse to what led to my obsession.
Finding
Yuen Biao
As i said above my introduction
to YB was Jackie Chan movies the first i saw with him was Project A i thought
he was great and fast and very trim but he didn't really stand out until
i saw Dragons Forever when i saw his amazing abilities and acrobatic talents.
In the UK his films were sparse most didn't get released here except Once
Upon A Time In China which didn't have enough of him for me, my next taste
of Yuen Biao came at around 13 years old when BBC2 (a UK TV Station) had
a theme night called Kung Fu Night which was full of Hong Kong related documentaries
and movies, the usual Bruce Lee Movies and lots of people talking about
the genre this was amazing for me nothing like this appeared over here and
no one talked about these movies. At around 2am The Prodigal Son came on
and blew me away it had an awful English dub but i didn't care it was great
all these styles Peking Opera, slapstick comedy and Yuen Biao in a larger
role than id ever seen, from then I've been impressed years later when i
got the internet and re found my love in asian movies i started collecting
among others his movies and found these other classic which id never seen
in the UK (some are available now) Righting Wrongs was available in the
UK dubbed in English with just Cynthia Rothrock on the cover and re named
Above The Law so i never knew he was in it let alone it was so fantastic.
Thanks must go to Hong Kong Legends for releasing The Prodigal Son re mastered
and with Cantonese dub also releasing Eastern Condors another wonderful
film and the internet has brought me other classics like Knockabout, On
The Run and The Iceman Cometh, among others. I'm still continuing my collecting
today and my interest is just as strong.
