Boxers Story: Directed by Lai Kai Ming and starring Yuen Biao, Eric Tsang, Gloria Yip, Jackie Lui, Boxer's Story is about a legendary boxing champion Yuen Biao who takes to gambling and drinking ever since his wife Gloria Yip deserted him and his son when his head was badly hit and was forced to quit the sport. At the same time, he finds solace through his son who hopes to see him becoming the boxing legend again. Eventually, his life takes another turn when he runs into his former wife, who wants to fight for the custody of their son. So, he returns to the boxing ring, staking his life against all odds to prove his mettle to his son and wife and to show them what a real hero is. This telemovie marks the return of Yuen Biao, who had become fatter after leading relaxed life in Canada. He worked out secretly in preparation for the movie, went on diet and played football. Boxer's Story opens in China and Hong Kong on November 12 POSTER
Shooting of Juvenile Chen Zhen is currently in full swing. According to the movie's publicist Miss Ho, even action star Yuen Biao is using doubles in this work. Yuen Biao plays Mr Qu who protects a princess in distress. Yuen Biao, having too many action scenes, infrequently gets doubled for more difficult stunts. On the other hand, the 14 year old Xu Xiao Long handles all actions personally. In fact, he's the only one in this work who is not doubled, even Yuen Biao concedes defeat. Yuen Biao is especially caring towards this child actor, often demonstrating stunts to Xu Xiao Long during his breaks, despite being already worn out after shooting. Director Law Kei comments Xu Xiao Long's performance in the show as fantastic.
FU YU JI (FATHER AND SON), a new film from Eric Tsang Chi Wai's film company Anytime, yesterday held a production start ceremony. Eric Tsang Chi Wai aside, other attending cast members included Yuen Biao, Gloria Yip Wan Yi, Chin Kar Lok, Ellis Tang Siu Yun and others. Chi Wai recently has persuaded Jacky Cheung Hok Yau to perform and now he has talked Yuen Biao into returning. He said, "I feel more actors should return to make movies because many viewers want to watch their performance. Yuen Biao for example still has many fans in Japan. If he doesn't make movies (his talent) is truly wasted." Chi Wai said, last time he saw Yuen Biao Yuen was a lot heavier. He told Yuen to lose weight and promised that if Yuen is successful then he would tailor made a script for him. Yuen Biao has lost over 20 pounds and thus he customized this film's script for Yuen.
Chi Wai said, "I wanted veterans to work with new comers and in turn
veterans can pass on their spirit to new comers. Before the manager system,
actors got along great. Since the appearance of managers, actors have more
gaps. When veterans and new comers work together, they can in conversations
and in meetings pass on the old tradition to new comers. Ultimately film
is a group project. (Do you have any other veterans who you would like to
return?) I plan to approach Tam Ka Ming to direct a movie. He was a master
director in the 80s. If he works with new comers, new comers can definitely
benefit a lot." Has the China Film Studio approached me about collaboration?
Chi Wai expressed, he will work with different companies like earlier with
Media Asia and Andy Lau Tak Wa's company. This time China Film Studio has
invested a little. FU YU JI costs HK$4 million. Does Chi Wai want to become
a film industry tycoon with all the recent film productions? He joked, "I
am only a film industry working class." Yuen Biao joked when asked
if Tsang Chi Wai asked him to return, "Chi Wai 'raped' me." He
also said that Chi Wai's sincerity moved him because Chi Wai has said that
he would make Yuen a star, which gave him a lot of confidence. Thus he has
decided to start anew. Yuen Biao and Chin Kar Lok in the film play buddies
who work at a garage.
He and Gloria Yip Wan Yi have a son. When asked how many years he has been away from film, he said, "Actually in the last decade or so I have been making movies, even Japanese films. I just never told the press. Recently I even guest starred in ENTER THE PHOENIX (DAI LO OI MEI LAI), playing Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho)'s father." As for China Film Studio approaching Sammo Hung Kam Bo to form a film company, Yuen Biao said that he was uncertain. Although he frequently met with Sammo, Jackie Chan and the others, they have never talked about that subject. Since the film market is on the rise again, has he considered forming a film company? He asked, "Has the film market revived? Back then we made more than 1,000 movies a year, now how many do we make? However I too hope more bosses will support the film industry." Having been officially away from film for 9 years, Yip Wan Yi has reunited with former co-star Yuen Biao to play his wife. Unfortunately they are separated due to a difference of opinion. Playing a wife and a mother, Yip Wan Yi said that she does not feel awkward at all because she herself has grown. Yip Wan Yi has worked with Yuen Biao on PEACOCK PRINCE. She even promoted it in Japan with him and she has a certain fan base there. Thus she has received film offers from Japanese companies, but she has been selective with the scripts. Acting aside, Yip Wan Yi is also working as in marketing promotion for a Japanese children product. She also expressed that she has just returned from Shanghai because she has some business there. At the same time she plans to release her second arts and crafts book. The publisher has also asked her to make a pictorial collection. When Chin Kar Lok was a stunt professional, he has worked with Yuen Biao but has not acted with him. This time they play buddies in the film, which Kar Lok Jai is very happy about. "The feeling this time is very special. I don't know whether Brother Biao kept himself well, or I wilted quickly." He revealed that Yuen Biao has a fight scene at the end and he hoped that Yuen can be in even better shape for it.
Hero
Youngster has now been released in a HK version it now has both Cantonese
and Mandarin tracks and a different cover. The subtitles are listed separate
so I imagine they are removable and not burnt on together like the mainland
disc. I'm unsure of the picture quality but i will do a comparison review
against my previous dvd review of the mainland disc and include screen
shots for quality examples
