About the Project
The Youth Violence Prevention & SEL Project began in the Fall of 2002 in the St. Louis area and is directed by Don Wahl, PhD, LPC, NCC and Bill Kuntz, MA, LCSW, Licensed Psychologist. Don and Bill have studied research-based violence prevention and social emotional learning programming throughout the nation. They have consulted with numerous professionals on the local, state and national level to identify the most successful, cost-effective and sustainable prevention programs that will address the needs of youth, their families, schools and communities in urban, suburban and rural settings. During the past five years, they have been actively collaborating with professionals in elementary schools, secondary schools, alternative schools, colleges, universities, community mental health centers, juvenile offices, state child services divisions, violence prevention agencies and youth organizations. During this time, their consulting services have been expanding to provide "state-of-the-art" training and resource information to youth professionals in related national organizations, associations and programs.
Mission
The overall mission of this project is to assist in providing and maintaining a sustainable, strength-based, community-focused approach to violence prevention. This is accomplished by sharing our expertise in developing customized, collaborative prevention models that include most of the following primary elements: a needs assessment; staff development; enhanced social emotional learning (SEL) programming in school curriculums or community youth programs; an integrative approach that links SEL skills to youth activities, and ongoing feedback to build and maintain a supportive, safe climate for youth.
