yorkshire main Accidents

Listed below are the names of men either injured or killed at the mine during various years. It includes there names, age, mining job and details of the accident. It gives a good understanding of the work involved in coal mining as well as the every day dangers.

1912. 13 March, Name, Hoase, 42, Black Smith, While lifting himself up by a rope he slipped and fell to the ground head first.

1914. Jan 5 , Michael Carins, 46, coal setter, fall of roof which fractured his right thigh.

Jan 10, J Mors ,33, Coal Setter, while pushing a tub a piece of coal fell from the roof, crushing the third finger on his left hand.

Jan14, Arthur Patrick, 19, Halage Hand, left hand crushed between tubs.

March 3, Archie Wright, 25, Loader, a fall of roof struck a prop knocking it out , which in turn struck the man knocking him against the pack wall.

1915, Jan 13, Ernest Barrowcliffe, Coal Setter, a piece of coal fell from the face, cutting index finger end off.

Jan19, Joseph Riley, 36, Stallman, while passing under the ripping lip a piece of coal fell on his left foot, crushing it between a rail.

Feb 19, William Bukett, 40 stallman, he was buried by coal while holeing, due to a weight bump bursting the coals over the sprags.

Feb 23, A Harris, 26, Collier, buried by a fall of coal.

April 7, George Redfern, 43, Stallman, a piece of coal which he was pulling off the face pinned his leg against the rail.

May 18, James Brown, 16, Haulage Hand, while clipping a set of tubs on, the tubs ran forward knocking him down.

June 18, L Rock,25, Electric Bell Man, struck in the back by the haulage rope, due to the return wheel frame breaking.

July 1, William Lewis, 50, Collier , got his hand between rope and return wheel of the endless haulage rope.

1920, Jan 1, William lewis, 69, Pickman, an overwind took place at No1 shaft and this man was in the cage decending.

Jan 6, H Higgs , 37, Collier, while packing in 8s stall some connies fell from the roof and caught him above the ankles.

Jan 6, J Brooks, 21, Rope Runner, he was standing at 48s junction while the empty tub was being lowered, the tub got off the road and struck him on the right leg below the knee.

Feb, 6, A Harrison , 25, Collier, a piece of coal rolled of the face and caught his left leg.

March 10, Walter Morris, 15, this boy slipped on cabin floor and fractured bone in forearm .

March 18, J Barrowclough, 46, Labourer, the man was walking on a small scaffold in the winding drum pit which gave way and he fell.

May 20, George H Hunt, 15, Haulagehand, he was uncoupling tubs and put his hand between the tubs when they moved forward.

Aug 24, William Galer, 51, Stoneman, he was pulling stone down and a piece of stone fell from the roof on to his left leg.

Oct 6 , Samuel Hall, 30, Collier , he was coming out at the end of the shift and fell down on some paving.

Oct 12, James Brady,26, Collier, he was getting coal down when the coal brock falling across his left leg, breaking it above the ankle.

Dec 30, Joseph Nickholls, 22, Collier, While twisting a tub on the flat sheet, a piece of coal burst from the face and caught the man on the left hip.

April 24, H Phillips, 37, Collier, He was sitting at a junction (meal time) when 3 tubs came uncoupled off the incoming set and caught his left leg as they ran into the stall.

May 10, C H Scott, 15, Haulage Hand, he was getting out of the way of a run of tubs when he tripped over a pulley and the tubs caught his left leg.

May 19, Henry Whitmores, 21, Collier, he was pulling coal off the face and a piece caught his left foot.

July 17, Isaac Gore, 24, he was fastening a guard on an engine when a run of tubs which were passing, caught him between tubs and props.

Aug 6, H Metcalf, 27, Collier, he was taking down coal when a portion of coal roof fell on him, the roof coal was only 1" thick and it had ground out over the top of a prop set to dirt, this prop should have been replaced.

Sept 7, Alec Davison, 64, Overman, while getting over a fall of dirt a piece of side fell onto him and fractured his rib on the left side.

Sept 7, M O'Malley, 26, Collier, he was pulling coal off the face when a piece fell onto his left leg causing a simple fracture.

Oct 4, J Sutcliffe, 32, Collier, he was standing on a platform on top of a empty tub, pulling loose stone with his pick when a piece of stone fell and struck him just above the wrist.

Oct 28, J Rice, 38, collier, he was filling a tub when some top coal broke of a prop and fell on him, knocking him to the floor and fracturing his left leg.

1923 Jan 9, Arthur Robinson, 52, Collier, while getting a tub onto the rails a prop was knocked out causing a fall which dislodged his right shoulder.

Jan 12, William Jesley, 37, collier, a piece of coal that was being pulled off the face knocked a prop out and caught his left leg.

Feb 24, S Burton, 28, collier, Burton was walking between 2 bars when a heavy bump ocurred which shook the whole bank, at the same time a bar was thrown out and a piece of top coal fell out from between the bars, striking Burton on the back and causing him to fall to the floor where a piece of coal fell on his left ankle.

March 16, E Wraper, 32, Collier, filling a tub, the tub was almost full, Wraper was reaching over the top of it, placing a lump of coal in position, when a piece of coal fell and imprisoned his arm causing a fracture of the bone.

July 18, Chapman, 26, Collier, he was filling a tub of coal near the face of the 41s stall, when a piece of coal fell from the face, striking Chapman on the left leg, causing a fracture.

Aug 1, G Heatherhogg, 15, Haulage Hand, a set was pushed off a flat place and as it ran off it caused some slack rope to tighten suddenly, he was struck on the leg by it.

1932- 19th Jan, J H Wormley, 19, Clipper, he was standing between the full and empty side line of rails when a set of  full tubs  was being drawn out and a tub near the centre of the set sided over onto him.

5th Feb, B.B Allen, 18, Haulage hand, he was pulling at the front end of a set of tubs when he slipped and the set came forward and crushed him.

10th Feb, A Stevenson, 59, Collier , he had just set a prop and was stepping back when he was caught by a fall of roof.

4th Mar, W.Blades ,17, Haulage hand, he was filling the tub greases on the haulage road when he saw a set of  tubs  coming towards him, on getting out of the way he fell and the tubs passed over his leg.

12th May , S littlehales,41, Collier , a piece of coal burst from the face hitting him on the back.

14th Dec, C Swift,20 , Haulage hand , he was following a full set of tubs outbye when they struck the roof and he was caught by the front end of the last tub.

1914- 21st April , W. Parks,15, Pony driver, when passing through  a door it was let go by another person and his left leg was caught between the door and post.

22 April , John Rust ,22, Assistant Onsetter, whilst lifting the catches on the cage removing empty tubs, the cage picked up suddenly , and the tubs struck him on the face.

16th June, B Pymen , 26 , Coal screenman, whilst pushing a tub of coal from the picking belt several tubs of coal ran into him trapping him between tub and girders.

16th June , G.N . Spicer,22, Road Corpral, whilst walking in advance of the train he stopped to pick a pick a piece of rock off the rail and was over taken by the train and crushed into the side.

19th June , Percy Arnett,Haulage hand, whilst taking a lashing chain off , the rope suddenly started , there by tightening the chain to the rope , pinning his right thumb.

29th June, J Greenhouse, 32, Collier, Fall of rock amputating the big toe on his right foot.

7th July, Robert Richards, 42, collier, fall of roof which buried the man.

20th Aug, John Alfred Wales, 18, Haulage Hand, when coupling some tubs some more bumped into them and fractured his right wrist.

1st Sept, Thomas Warthill, 36, Collier, girder forced out by rock fell onto his ankle, injuring it.

4th Dec, Ephzain Arkinstall, 37, Coal Getter, buried by fall of roof from a slip side.

1923  - 22nd October, Ernest Nock, 22, Labourer, Nock was on a scaffold knocking a bolt out when he slipped off the scaffold down the side of the tracks causing a fracture to his pelvis.

25th October, William Harris, 14, Haulage Boy, He was running by some empty tubs to tell the haulage boy to make up another set, when he fell over some wooden lockers close to the rail breaking his arm close to the wrist.

10th Dec, J Grayson, 59, Collier, empty tub fell onto the mans leg.

 1924 - 3rd Jan, Thomase Hall, 35, Collier, the accident was due to Hall catching his heel against the rail when he was pulling a piece of coal which came over more suddenly than he expected and pinned his leg to the rail.

15th Feb, M Bryson-Gilligan, 49, White Washer, slipped off a door while white washing.

28th April, E Groves, 37, Collier, while working against the fault a piece of stone fell off the fault onto his right leg causing compound fracture of lower leg.

16th May, Bryan Fickle, 42, Deputy, this deputy was firing a shot and was stood in a refuge hole 4 or 5 yards from the shot when a shot that he had previously charged, went off close to him causing compound fracture of lower left leg.

2nd Dec, G Bowley, 40, Collier, a full tub was being brought down the bank when the locker broke and the tub ran into a prop which was laying across the rails causing it to swing round and strike Bowley on the left leg.

14th Nov, George Clamp, 15, Rope Runner, he was getting a full run of coal when the run started and pinned him against the side.

1925 - 24th Jan, George Humphries, 47, Collier, he was getting a tub of coal and a piece of coal burst from the face onto his leg and fractured it.

7th March, G Waistridge, 36, Blacksmith, he was assisting to put new winding rope on No.2 pit when he slipped with his right arm between the brake and the brake path, the engine man put on the brake which trapped his arm.

2nd April, Harold Parve, 14, Haulage Hand, the haulage rope came off the pulley and caught his leg, causing him to fall with his arm across the rail.

15th April, W Douglas, 39, Collier, he was getting coal at the face when a piece fell and trapped his ankle.

17th August, G Thacker, 28, Collier, whilst he was filling a tub a piece of coal fell from the top of the face onto his ankle.

1939 - 23rd Nov, W Emms, 34, Corporal, some tubs were de-railed, he clipped on the endless rope to draw them back, when the rope started up the empty side rope flew across and struck his leg.

12th Dec, G Hotchkiss, 30, Deputy, he was asked to check the roof of a conveyor filled face as it was not considered safe, as he stepped towards it there was a fall of roof, he was partly buried. In 1946 on the 28th oct at the age of 37 he was killed by an underground train in the Barnsley seam. picture below.

 

21st Feb, A Stringer, 38, Ripper, assisting to straighten the road when he run over by tubs - fatal accident.

15th Feb, G Allen, 19, Haulage Hand, fell from ripping lip.

1940, 31st jan,  Herbert Walker, Colliery ripper, 45 years old.  He was pinned by a fall of stone from the roof and died from a fracture of the base of the skull and laceration of the brain resulting in accidental death.

1953 - 3rd Dec, W McNicholas, 36, Back Ripper, at a point on a main deisel haulage road a ripper was standing on the scaffold when a board moved under the rippers feet causing him to lose control of the girder which fell onto his right leg.

1st March, F Willmott, 40, Deputy, received fractrured spine while loading materials.

4th March, V Elliott, 43, Face Ripper, struck by arch girder across the legs. 

7th March, E Johnson, 47, Conveyor Belt Man, slipped off conveying structure. 

20th May, V Biggins, 39, Face Ripper, injured by piece of coal which came off the face onto him.

11th June, C Lee, 51, Coal Cutter, arm trapped against prop.

8th July, W Prigmore, 38, Ripper, ripping collapsed on him causing instant death.

18th August, H Cunningham, 42, Collier, pinned against roof support by fall of coal.

14th Sept, W Wright, 27, Borer, struck by projected material after firing of shell.

18th Sept, T Marshall, 35, Collier, sustained fracture when fall of coal struck him.

29th Oct, G Clarke, 21 Borer, crushed against a steel prop by fall of coal on the face.

3rd Nov, H Green, 59, Collier, injured while filling coal in the stable hole.

11th Nov, N Bethel, 30, Contractor, trapped by fall of roof.

18th Nov, W Wynne, 65, Contractor, struck by girder.

16th Nov, C Bower, 38, Collier, heavily thrown when he was caught by the haulage rope.

18th Dec, H H M Clark, 29, Collier, received fatal injuries when buried by fall of roof.

1956 - 14th January, D Rutherford, 30, Cutters Mate, struck by a peice of coal, sustained a fracture of left arm.

14th Feb, R L Clarkson, 37, Waste Drawer, fatally injured when waste fell on him.

8th August, J Smith, 57, Diesel Driver, crushed between a 3 1/2 ton mine car and locomotive.

18th August, R Mallin, 43, Hauler Driver, crushed in pelvic area by rope.

1st Nov, G Thompson, 56, contractor, struck by Cardox Shell while firing.

1958 -  20th Nov, A Race, 43, Collier, on a along wall advancing face in a seam 4 3/4 thick an experience collier was injured when he was struck by a section of coal face.

3rd Dec, A Church, 55, Deputy, in a 5ft 6 face on a disc machine face with power conveyors and pre-cutting machine, a deputy walking on a stationary conveyor was struck by the pre-cutter haulage rope.  He sustained fractured tibia and fibia.

14th July, A Limer, 53, Collier, on a long wall advancing face he was struck ny projected material as he was crossing over the face conveyor.

1959 - 18th April, W Ball, 42, Packer, a packer was behind the chock when the waste roof collapsed and he was fatally injured by fall of roof.

9th Jan, G A Mullins, 19, Apprentice Collier, sustained fracture of right tibia and fibia when he was struck by a section of face coal.

July 5th  1962,  Bill Wray.  Miners dug with there bare hands for over an hour to free a colleague trapped by a roof fall in the Barnsley seam. But the man 46 years old bill wray an overman of woodlands died on the way to Doncaster royal infirmary, another man Arthur Davies of Edlington was also caught by the fall but released by his work mates almost immediately, he was allowed home after treatment.
