YORKSHIRE MAIN COLLIERY

AND OTHER LOCAL MINES

UNDERGROUND DISTRICTS 2

The following pictures show how close Yorkshire Main came to other collieries underground in various seams and locations.

This picture shows workings from the Cadeby Colliery in the Dunsil seam very close to Victoria Road school  and catholic church . The school is at the bottom of the village in eye sight of the former colliery.

Xo9s and Xo1s approaching Maltby colliery workings in the Swallow Wood seam.

Cadeby workings again near Victoria Road playing fields, this time in the Swallow Wood seam.

71s 72s and 76s in the Barnsley seam right up to Cadeby Colliery workings under Conisborough.

72 and 74s in the Barnsley seam under Conisborough approaching the workings of the Silverwood Colliery.

15s and 20s in the Barnsley seam next to Rossington Colliery workings, under the parish of Tickhill.

The next two pictures are interesting in that they show Yorkshire Main workings in two seams, above and below each other. The first shows DO6s 7s and 8s in the Dunsil seam.  I can remember putting the final sealing plate on D06s stopping along with Ian? - the assistant ventilation officer, i remember looking down the old roadway one last time before attaching the sealing plate and thinking that no one would ever see the old roadway again, quite an experience for a 17 year old.

Above this district was B06s, 7s, 8s and 9s in the Barnsley seam, the Dunsil coalfaces were worked after the Barnsley faces above and were retreat coalfaces.  This was a method of making the roadways first then working backwards, often done when districts were close above or below to avoid bad ground.  This area of the mine was underneath Balby.
