YORKSHIRE MAIN COLLIERY

AND OTHER LOCAL MINES

Pictures of mining today

The following pictures have all been taken very recently (2006) in the following UK coal mines.

Daw Mill, Kellingley and Rossington, although as yet the individual mines have not been identified from the pictures so any help would be appreciated.

Combined road heading and roof bolting machine getting final testing on the surface before going underground.

Bolting up the roof.

Bolting up at different colliery, notice the coal seam in front of the heading (tunnel).

Road heading team with well stone dusted roadway for the camera.

Rock prop - temporary roof support.

Installing road way girders for extra roof support.

It's still a dirty job on the coal face.

The face of modern mining.

When the weight comes on theirs no way of stopping it, only holding it back as can be seen from this picture.

The ultimate mining picture - Cutting the coal on the face with hand held remote control device.

Roof bolting at Kellingly colliery.

The next picture shows a longwall coal face at Metropolitan colliery in NSW. It extracts up to 4m from the face. The photo shows the face being prepared for salvage( you can see a yellow plastic mesh called Huesker under the canopies) this prevents goaf intrusion when the supports are taken off.

This is also used at other UK mines including Daw mill below.

The next picture shows an installation roadway at Okey Creek colliery in Queensland before the supports have been installed. The roof is being supported by roof bolting.
