Between 1947 and 1952 the new pit bottom was completed which was much larger and enabled the introduction of underground locomotives and large mine cars, this picture was taken in 1953 and shows the first loco being lowered down the shaft

If any one has ever worked down yorkshire main they will remember this picture very clearly, the freezing cold air was pulled down this shaft which was used for man riding and we used to stand here shivering waiting to be taken back to the surface, especially bad if coming out of the swallow wood district which was in the return air [very warm].We used to fight for a place on the stairs that led to the upper deck to get out of the cold air.
