|Why yoga for men?
After years of teaching yoga classes in the Chicago area, I have noticed that the classes are always predominately female students. Knowing that male and female energy is as different as the sun and the moon led me to the idea of creating a class for male students only. As a cohesive group, we can move through the yoga practice and meet our individual needs without the excess of estrogen (sorry ladies!)
What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha Yoga is one of the world's most integrated systems of personal development. A regular yoga practice can help keep all systems of the body, from muscles to ligaments to organs, nerves and glands in glowing health. Yoga, an ancient Sanskrit word meaning "union", was designed to bring a man's mind, body and spirit into harmony. Hatha : ha, meaning sun, and tha, meaning moon, brings us full circle by uniting our opposites into one integrated whole (union.) Hence, Hatha Yoga. This will lead to a deeper level of self-realization and tranquility. This is accomplished through a series of yoga poses or postures, special breathing and relaxation techniques.
What can you expect from a regular yoga practice?
A regular yoga practice will:
- improve cardiovascular and respiratory health
- increase flexibility of muscles and joints
- correct your posture
- improve your immune response
- aid your digestion
- calm your mind and free your spirit
What can you expect and what should you wear?
Come with an open mind and expect to find a group of like-minded men all working toward similar goals. Wear loose-fitting clothes so you will be able to move and breathe with ease. Please bring your own yoga mat; if you need to purchase one, let me know and I can bring mats available for sale.It is also a good idea to bring water to class and not eat food two hours prior to attending class. You can always grab a bite to eat after class as there is a great selection of restaurants nearby.
Who is the teacher?
Ken Cox has been practicing yoga for over 22 years and is a certified yoga instructor by the Chicago Yoga Center. He also completed a 200 Svastha Yoga and Yoga Therapy course with AG Mohan of Chennai, India. Ken attends weekend "Teacher Intensive" seminars and the annual Midwest Yoga Conference, where he is inspired by teachers from around the world. His teaching style is open, honest and real (and sometimes comical!) Ken believes that yoga is very much like a dialogue, where we are constantly listening and responding to our own body. "Yoga teaches us to live in our own body."
We will also have a pranayama expert (breathing techniques) join us in some of our classes.
