General Information about Yellow Collared Macaws

Scientiifc Name

A auricolis

Average Length

Somewhere around 16 inches, but I've heard people say all the way from 15" - 17".

Average Weight 250 - 280 grams. Alex apparently is a little light for the species weighing in at 247g.

Coloration

Body is primarily a rich green, with vibrant blue flight feathers. The tail begins in a rich red wine color and ends in blue. Both the tail and wings are a dark yellow underneath. The head is mainly black, with a bare white face patch. The cheeks are lined with tiny, fine black feathers, typical of macaws. The entire beak is black, fading to a lighter horn color at the tip. The feet are typically flesh toned, no black toes here. The most distinguising feature? The band of bright yellow feathers stretching across their nape. The famous "yellow collar". This band is not present in young ycm's. It begins to show up gradually around the first molt and fills in and brigtens with each subsequent molt.

Vocalization

Don't be fooled by the smaller size! Yellow Collared Macaws have quite a voice when they want to and can rival the larger macaws. They're not typically known as screamers, and they're easily trained away from screaming behavior, but when they want to they can be LOUD and UNRELENTING!

Can They Talk?

Of course they can! They are excellent at picking up words, and most boast a vocabulary somewhere around 50 words and phrases. Yellow collared macaws quite readily learn the meaning of what they're saying as well, and connect a word to its meaning in practice. Example: "Step Up" The bird quickly learns that step up means to step onto a human's finger. When the bird wishes to be picked up by its human it will say "Step Up" to elicit the desired reaction from the human. Don't be fooled, they're smarter than you think!

Sexing

No luck! There are no differences in the sexes physically, you're gonna have to get a DNA (or surgical) test for this one. Some people say the females are slightly smaller than the males, but its not a reliable way to tell them apart.
