MEND
Do you want your child to get fitter, healthier and happier for free? Would you like to spend some
quality time together?
There's a programme that has helped over 20,000 families across the country have fun while they get fitter and
healthier and now it's available in North Somerset and families who take part don't pay a penny!
The ten-week MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition ..Do it!) programme consists of two-hourly after-school sessions twice a
week designed to boost confidence and self-esteem turning conflict around food into family fun.
Independent research conducted by the University College London's Institute of Child Health found that children who
attended the MEND programme experienced long-term health benefits, including weight loss and improvements in
fitness and self-esteem. The programme helps children to understand what eating less looks like and how to choose
the best things for them to eat.
Three new courses are due to start very soon at Banwell School, Churchill School, Backwell School and Broadoak
School and places are already starting to fill up.
At the beginning of the sessions families will socialise together in a fun and healthy way. Then children and young
people aged 7-13 will have fun during active sessions like indoor-climbing, trampolining and swimming, while parents
get the opportunity to talk to others and take home practical strategies to help their family become more active and eat
healthily.
If you think your child is above a healthy weight and you would like to register for a place on North Somerset s fun free
healthy lifestyle programme, contact Alison Arnold at Churchill School, email
AAA@churchill.n-somerset.sch.uk or phone
01934 854064 or Xanne (pronounced Zan) Blythe at Broadoak School, email
XAB@broadoak.n-somerset.sch.uk or phone
01934 422000.
Comments from mums who have been on the programme in North Somerset include:
My daughter has much more energy and confidence. I'd recommend the MEND programme to any family as it is fun
and social "Children enjoy making new friends from different schools, MEND increases their confidence."
And some of the youngsters commented: "It's fun, you get to make new friends and do new activities" and "It's
amazing! We learn lots of things and how to be fit and healthy."

Hello
I was wondering if a local historian could answer a question for me? My 3 x Great Grandmother died in Yatton in 1841 (Sarah Ann Salisbury) of consumption. The informant on the death certificate was described as 'Inmate'. Could you tell me if there was a hospital or home in Yatton at that time and whether there are any local churchyards she may have been buried in.
Thanking you in anticipation.

Researching Caperns
I am researching Caperns the well known seed company who I believe moved from Bristol to Yatton in 1956 and
wondered if any staff from round about 1958-1960 are living in Yatton or nearby.
The famous talking budgie Sparkie Williams who we are making a documentary about, had a special relationship with
Caperns and made a series of adverts with the company. Sparkie taught slogans like 'Don't forget your Caperns "
Caperns made 7 film adverts for ITV with Sparkie and issued a popular disc as well to help owners teach their birds to
talk. We would be very keen to talk with residents who remember the bird and Caperns Seeds at the time.

I lived in Yatton from 1940 to 1963 when I emigrated to Australia
My family went on living there until my father died in 1973. He was Bertrand Davis and was a prominent figure in the village in those days being a member of the parish council and running the youth club as well as being an active member of the Labour Party. Together with
other villagers Jim Hill and Harold Cole and Mary Ashbee they made an impression on Yatton that should not be forgotten. My mother Thelma also made big contributions to the village being (probably) the only pianist there post war and therefore accompanied everyone
and anything that performed in the village. She died aged 99 in 2007. I remember village life as a child and teenager being uncomplicated and unrushed and have fond memories of pantomimes, ballet in the church hall, girl guides and much more. I go back there now when I visit and it is so changed, but visiting the church and putting flowers on the graves of loved ones now gone I look around and there they all are sleepng peacefully and still a part of Yatton, all the names I remember! If anyone remembers me and wants to get in touch please email me at

Bristol Freecycle
The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving stuff for free. Each group is run by local volunteer moderators.
One rule: everything posted must be free. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, toys or an old door. Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Respond to the posting directly and you just might get it. After that it is up to the giver to set up a time for passing on the treasure.

A Cafe for Yatton Station
The Strawberry Line Cafe Project Community Interest Company (CIC) has been formed to progress the project to provide a cafe in the redundant downside platform buildings at Yatton station. The CIC will put its profits back into the community. The cafe will provide real-life work experience for young people with learning disabilities and serve refreshments to rail users and other station visitors. The steering group (with representatives from the Brandon Trust, Mencap, North Somerset Council, Friends of Yatton Station and Severnside Community Rail Partnership) is grateful for all the local support and in-kind help it has received so far. It is possible that the cafe could be up and running as soon as next spring if the necessary shortfall of funding can be raised. The group would particularly like to hear from anyone with skills and experience in the catering trade. If you have anything to offer to the project, please contact Faith Moulin on 834282 or

Hello people of Yatton
I am researching the history of my family who appear to have come from Yatton and surrounding area. Their name is HIPPISLEY/HIPSLEY/HIPSLY there have been various spellings over the years. I am more interested in finding out more about them as people, where & how they lived, rather than ammassing a list of names. I only live a short distance from Yatton and have often walked through the village imagining what life was like for them. If anyone can help me with any information I would be truly grateful. please email me at
djbpage@googlemail.com Many Thanks Debra

Researching my family tree
I am researching my family tree and am particularly interested in the Earl family of Yatton. I have gone back as far as James Earl b1757. A number of the Earl family moved to Cardiff in the early to middle 1800's. I have a lot of deeds and mortages and various other documents relating to Yatton Manor Rectory dating as far back as 1797 but have no idea where this place is, or even if it is still there. I believe the family were quite prominent in the area and would be interested to hear from anyone who would be able to help me with my research.
My email is

Thanks, Mike

Trying to trace an old friend
I am trying to trace an old friend who I have corresponded with for years since we met way back in the early 70's on a judo course- but sadly over not the
last few. Her name is Jean Perry ( maiden name Parkin) and she has two children Paul and Lyne-marie who must be late 20;s early 30's now. Jean's last
known address was broadcroft avenue, Claverham, Bristol. but I think she may have moved. If any one knows of Jean please tell her Jane is still at the same
address in Maidstone and would love to make contact again. I can be contacted by email
