Yarn or a Tale Spinning Fibers

Fine Natural & Hand Dyed Spinning Fibers & Handcrafted Goats Milk Soaps

HAND DYED ROVINGS & TOP

You can rest assured that my hand dyed spinning fibers are easy to spin ~  I  won't sell fiber that's been felted in the dye process.  The fibers are treated with care in the dye bath, then gently fluffed while slightly damp.  Some fine wools such as merino and rambouillet and mohair and mohair blends will compress somewhat in the dye process ~ this is different than felting and I fluff them to open them up a little.   Hand Dyed Spinning  fibers are sold in batches BUT if you only need an ounce or two, or if you need a couple of pounds, let me know!  If you are ever dissatisfied with any of my hand-dyed fibers, please let me know and I'll do everything I can to make it right!

I've separated the fibers into categories, such as Fine Wool, Medium Wool, Sock Blends, Premium Fiber, etc. ~ keep scrolling...there's a lot to see here :)

Please bear in mind that I reproduce kettle-dyed and not hand-painted colorways.   The batch you recieve may vary only slightly from what is pictured and individual monitors may not represent the colors pictured exactly.   IIf you'd like a colorway in another fiber, please contact me ~ I'll be happy to do whatever I can to accomodate your needs!

Fine Wool and Fine Wool Blends

Domestic Merino X Rambouillet Wool Combed Top ~   This is a lovely, next-to-the-skin soft, bouncy top with some of the characteristics of both breeds. I personally find the spun yarn to be a bit "firmer" than pure breed merino ~ a bit less squishy.  It will hold up very well and give great stitch definition because it makes a smooth, strong yarn.  I think with a bit less twist in a bulky yarn it will resemble most merino a little more.

Merino X Rambouillet Wool Combed Top ~ $12.00 per 4 oz braid

Antique Sweetpeas ~  A new colorway with muted antiquey colors that remind me a patch of heirloom sweetpeas in the garden. (One 4-oz lot available)

Indian Corn ~ Another new colorway inspired by a recent trip to a local pumpkin patch where they had a variety of unusual colorful Indian Corn.  (Currently sold out but I'll be dyeing more this weekend so if you'd like to order, please do and enter any quantity you'd like...I can dye up as much as you need!)

Menswear ~ Although I consider this to be unisex, it's masculine enough for any of the men in your life!  This is a six-oz lot so the price is a bit higher...$18.00. (One 6 oz lot available)

Potluck 2 ~ This is an OOAK series I played with recently. This one is quite bright with blues, greens and a little bit of white space.  (only one 4 ounce lot available)

WENSLEYDALE x DORSET Wool Roving ~ I'm including this in the fine wool category although it is probably better classified as "medium-fine" ~ however, the Wensleydale is very silky and I recently spun and knit a scarf from this blend and found it to be perfectly soft enough for around my neck.  I would recommend spinning this without a super-tight twist if you intend to wrap it around your neck.  For socks, it has a lot of strength and can take more twist without losing the silky qualities of the Wensleydale.  The Wensleydale brings a lot of luster to the table along with its characteristic "silky" hand and the Dorset adds loft and elasticity.  I love this fiber and hope you will too!

Hand-Dyed Wensleydale x Dorset Roving ~ $12.00 per 4 oz braid

Forest Primeval ~ Shades of emerald, plum, toffee and gold.  (Two 4-oz lots available)

Moderne Dark ~ Toffee, Pale Blues with lots of white space  (Two 4-oz lots available)

Moderne Light ~ Toffee, Pale Blues with lots of white space ~ lighter than the lot above but perfectly compatible with each other  (One 4-oz lot available)

A Girl's Heart ~ Feminine, light-hearted blend of violets and pink/raspberry tones with a little bit of white space (One 4-oz lot available)

DOMESTIC Merino Wool Combed Top ~   Very soft lovely merino combed top from American flocks.  This top varies somewhat from the Australian merino that you are probably used to spinning.  I think it falls somewhere between that and the "firmer" feeling of rambouillet.

Hand Dyed Domestic Merino Combed Wool Top is $12.00 per 4 oz braid.

Femme Domestic Merino Combed Top There's nothing masculine about this one ~ all girl, all day :)   (two 4-oz lots available)

Cartwheel Domestic Merino Combed Top ~ This is a colorway that I repeat often and it's never the same twice.  Bright greens, raspberry pinks and variations of greys and plums.  (currently sold out but more can be dyed to order).

Silvered Lemons Domestic Merino Combed Top Bright and pale yellows, white and silvery pale grey.  The flip side of the braid shows more white and grey than yellow so all the colors are more evenly distributed than it appears in this photo. One 4 oz lot available and more can be dyed to order.

Homecoming Domestic Merino Combed Top:  Pale raspberry pink, charteuse and silvery grey with white.  Feminine and sophisticated  Two 4 oz lots available and more can be dyed to order.

Medium & Medium/Fine Wool Blends

These wools and blends have amazing luster, great strength and are excellent choices for beginning spinners because they are very easy to spin!  They're also priced for beginners or anyone wanting a less expensive, very satisfying pure wool spinning experience.  While not as soft as a fine wool such as merino, I hand pick the finest domestic fleeces and fibers I can find in this category and feel that they are among the best medium wools available and all are from U.S. flocks!

100% Border Leicester Hand Dyed Roving ~ Excellent quality, VERY soft, lovely, lustrous Border Leicester Roving. Border Leicester isn't a fine wool but a medium, long stapled wool with incredible luster and great strength ~ it's one of my favorites and is always really popular with handspinners.  Try Border Leicester just once and you'll see why spinners love it so much!

Hand Dyed Border Leicester Rovings are $12.00 / 4 oz braid  ~ I have plenty in stock of this particular fiber and am happy to take custom orders for larger projects.

Hand Dyed 100% Romney Roving ~ we select excellent quality, easy to spin romney roving made here in Michigan from U.S. (and usually local) flocks.  The rovings are fairly thick, quite fine for romney and practically spin themselves!

Hand Dyed Romney Rovings are $10.00/4 oz braid

Yuletide 100% Romney Lamb Wool Roving ~ Not only is this a special holiday edition, it's also a very special, super-fine Romney lamb that has great length and is beautifully soft and lustrous.  Truly fabulous!  It's a little more expensive than my regular Romney rovings but worth every penny!  I also have this special fiber available in Winter Leaf and Melon Balls ~ scroll down for more info. 4 oz Yuletide Romney Lamb:  $13.50  (Two 4-oz lots available)

Time and Tide Romney Roving ~ Soothing blend of blue, sea green and grey.  It's really difficult to photograph these particular blues and greens so the roving you receive may vary a bit in intensity from what you're seeing on your monitor.  (Two 4 oz lots available)

Pathways Romney Roving ~ Blues, greens and autumn oranges mingle in this colorway.  (Two 4 oz lots available)

Winter Leaf Romney Roving ~ This colorway was inspired by a nature photo and I'm really in love with it (and so are my customers!)  It's a very calm, pale soothing mixture of silvery lavender with white, pale grey-blue and various shades of toffee.   This is a colorway I reproduce often so please bear in mind that your braid may differ slightly from the braid pictured.   (One 4 oz lot available and more can be dyed to order!)

The 4-oz lot above (one available) is for the regular romney roving I usually carry and it's $10.00 per 4 oz)

Winter Leaf is also available in a very special super-fine Romney lamb roving ~ 4 oz : $13.50  (Two 4-oz lots available)

Melon Balls Romney Roving ~ A little more suttle than the other Melon Balls colorways on the site, hand-dyed onto some very nice, quite soft 100% romney roving.  The colorway you receive may vary slightly from the pictured version as I reproduce this colorway frequently.  If you have any questions, please contact me! (One 4-oz lot available and more can be dyed to order!)

The 4-oz lot above (one available) is for the regular romney roving I usually carry and it's $10.00 per 4 oz)

Melon Balls  is also available in a very special super-fine Romney lamb roving ~ 4 oz : $13.50  (Two 4-oz lots available)

Under the Sea Romney Roving ~ This colorway just glows!   (Currently sold out but more can be dyed to order)

New Zealand Romney Combed Top ~ This is an imported top that I chose for it's long staple length and great luster.  It's a medium wool and not as soft as the domestic romney roving above but is really beautiful and should make a very hard-wearing, lustrous, smooth worsted yarn.  It takes dye beautifully and is easy to spin.

Radiant New Zealand Romney Combed Top ~ A fresh blend of lavender, blue and tonal green variations.  4 oz ~ $11.50 (Two 4 oz lots available)

Romney Perendale Combed Top ~ This is an imported blend of two medium wools which creates a strong fiber excellent for smooth worsted spinning.  I would call it medium to medium-fine ~ quite soft with lower luster. The perendale offers long staple length, as does the romney and the Perendale also brings some of the characteristics of a down breed to the table so the blend has a bit more bounce than a classic straight Romney  (the Perendale is a Romney/Cheviot cross actually) A nice, thick combed top.   I think you'll like it and it would make a most excellent sock yarn, hence I'm offering some of it in 6 oz lots so you'll have plenty to play with :)

Punch Perendale/Romney Combed Top ~ 6 oz.  This is somewhat muted blend of cantelope and raspberry with a little tiny bit of white space.  (One 6 oz lot available ~ $16.50)

Cartwheel Perendale/Romney Combed Top ~ 4 oz.  Bright pink, lime green and shades of dark grey.  (One 4 oz lot available ~ 11.50)

McKenna Perendale/Romney Combed Top ~ 6 oz.  Classic pink and brown blend with some pale tan tones and a little bit of white space to freshen things up   (One 6 oz lot available ~ 16.50)

New Color Study Sock Series

This is a new series of colorways dyed a bit differently than my usual kettle-dyed technique.  The repeats are longer and the colors shift differently ~ one of the colors will be more concentrated in one area with very long repeats as opposed to the other two colors.  This roving can be studied, then manipulated in any way you choose for different effects in your spun yarns ~ below is a photo that shows the length of the color repeats.

I spun the yarn for the socks you see above by splitting the roving in half lengthwise and then, keeping track of the ends, I split it lengthwise again.  I used four bobbins (my goal was to end up with 2 relatively equal 2-ply skeins ~ one skein per sock)    For the first 2 bobbins I spun the quarters of roving as they were, one quarter per bobbin.  For the other two bobbins, I split the quarters of roving lengthwise once more (again keeping track of the ends ~ always spinning from the same end) to shake up the color repeats somewhat.  I made sure that I marked the ends of the resulting two skeins as well so that I knew where to start knitting.  This resulted in a somewhat matching pair of socks.  If you're a total perfectionist, this probably won't appeal to you but, for me, it worked.  I know it's not the most technical explanation ever but I tend to be a more intuitive spinner, as opposed to technically perfect. The striping didn't match up exactly, as you can see, but I was still pretty pleased with the results.  I've been trying to recreate this colorway and haven't been very successful yet.  I'm going to keep trying though since everyone seems to want it ~ if you want to make me really crazy, go ahead and ask for it ~ aaarghhhh!!!!  I may have another go this weekend....

ON SALE NOW~ 20% OFF!  (marked down from original price of $25.00)

Color Study Sock series rovings are sold in 8 oz lots and are $20.00 per 8 oz braid.  The fiber is a fine romney that spins up silky and strong  and is an excellent choice for socks or other items needing long wear and strength. A medium wool.  Most of the colorways were inspired by fantasy/magical works of art.

Great Sock Blends!

These fibers are usually a fine or medium wool combined with a long wool or long wool cross breeds.  They aren't as soft as merino or other fine wool breeds but they do have amazing strength, great luster and, when combined with a shorter-stapled breed, offer good elasticity as well.  Wonderful for socks or any other item that will get hard use,  like mittens, slippers, bags, etc.  Also great for weaving!  I've started dyeing this in 6 oz lots so there will be plenty of fiber for those of you who like to navajo ply.

My friend June spun and knit these socks out of the Cotswold/Romney "Jester" colorway ~ how cute are these??????

Romney/Cotswold Blend Hand-Dyed Roving ~ Long-stapled with great luster, a very strong fiber to use in projects that you want to last a long long time :)  Great for socks, hats, mittens, bags or weaving!  The long staple length makes this a great candidate for spinning low-twist singles and the romney gives it some bounce.  Good felting wool.  I have some of this left (but not a lot!) so if you would like to custom order another colorway or more of what you see here please let me know!

Fuji Apple Romney/Cotswold Roving ~ The red and green skin with a hint of juicy white flesh inside.

4 oz Fuji Apple Romney/Cotswold Roving ~ $10.00 (One 4-oz lot available)

Jester Romney/Cotswold Roving ~ Finally, Jester translated into roving which gives a brighter, clearer, more predictable result :)  Super cheerful, fun blend of bright raspberry pink, muted berries & plums, varying shades of orange with some lemony yellow.  I suppose this jester likes fruit <g>  6 oz ~ $15.00 (One six oz lot available)
