It will serve mainly yachts of 75m-100m long. The marina will also include a shopping centre, supermarkets, yacht equipment shops, a fitness centre and sports facilities, banks, a petrol station, restaurants and a cultural centre.

As part of the development a ferryboat management facility will be established to provide for cruises to the Greek Islands of Kalimnos, Kos and Leros, as well as a customs post, port authority facilities and a passport control unit.

Didim D-Marina is being built on a build-operate-transfer model for 25 years by the Dogus Group, one of Turkey's leading construction companies. Dogus chief executive Ferit Sahenk added that with his company's overall investment in marinas in Turkey reaching US$200 million, he believed that Didim Marina would bring extra new business to the area.

The long awaited marina is finally due a grand opening in May this year, according to D Marine the completion will be finished and Altinkum can expect a huge boost for local businesses as tourism will prosper and money will pour into the town.

The marina was Constructed by Doğuş Holding with a budget of $50m and is set to be a great marina with a capacity to hold over a thousand yachts, this fact alone shows just how grand the scale is going be for the marina and the yachts will bring great tourism to an already thriving resort.

Tecnical assistance will also be provided for as part of the service at Didim marina to aid the yachts and other boats in anchoring and parking the vessels etc as this can sometimes prove to be quite tricky.

Everything has been taken into consideration and thought out in great detail with the construction of this marina and every efort to make it successful, the breakwaters at the marina to protect the vessels are huge measuring 1,150m long on one side and 625m on the other to shield from the winds. Altinkum Didim marina will be one of the largest in Turkey and will provide easy access to nearby Greek islands Kos and Samos that are also popular with foreign tourists in fact the yacht tourists that frequent these islands will have easy access to Didim now which will encourage them to drop by.

SUMMER HOLIDAY 2009 BOOKING TURKEY

The current credit crisis has not stopped Britains booking their annual summer holidays for 2009 however due to the British pound dropping in value against the Euro it has meant that Europe is no longer their top holiday destinations. The family holiday in Europe will work out on average more expensive this year than travelling further afield this summer as reports from travel companies are already showing at least a 27% rise in bookings for non European countries.

This makes Turkey, Egypt ad Morocco the top three destinations for summer holidays in 2009 as tourists will get more value for money and value for money is on everyones agenda this year due to the fact that the country is currently struggling economically at the moment. Many people have been affected by the credit crisis in the last year whether they have been hit directly with job losses or redundancy themselves or know someone who has, so to get away for a holiday will mean more this summer than it ever has before meaning the best deals will be taken advantage of leaving Europe the less popular holiday destination this year.

It is not always a cheaper option to holiday in the UK as a hotel on average will cost at least £40 per night and nice weather is not always something to be relied upon in Britain, tourists usually opt for a holiday abroad especially with all inclusive deals being very popular for families with children. Some travel companies are expecting such a busy period this summer to the top destinations that they have even put on extra weekly flights to accomodate the bookings they are expecting.

Edinburgh airport has already had extra flights to Turkey scheduled by certain travel compaies and other airports are expected to announce the same. Bookings for Egypt are reported to be up by a huge 38% this summer but Spain is suffering for the first time in 30 years as bookings are down for the first time ever compared to other usually less popular holiday destinations. Britons owing holiday homes in Spain are starting to sell their properties while they can still make a profit as the value in currency can affect the property value if the pound continues to weaken.

PRISON TERM FOR BRIT'S BARKING DOG

A WELL-KNOWN British resident and leading animal supporter has been landed with a suspended prison term – after her dog barked at a Turkish woman.

Gill Erer, the general secretary of the Didim Friends of Animals, which supports homeless dogs and cats in the town, was left shocked and stunned when she was handed a 25-day suspended prison term at the town’s court.

Ms Erer, who is set to leave the town for a new job in Italy shortly, attended court after she was accused of allowing her dog to bark at the unnamed Turkish woman.

Ms Erer told Voices that the court heard there was no evidence to suggest the dog had bitten or jumped up at the woman.

Recalling the incident, Ms Erer said her dog Zebby had come across the Turkish woman who was walking her dog, on open land and the woman began screaming, and was trying to ward off Zebby, while her dog remained on a lead.

She said that despite calling to the woman to drop her lead, she didn’t and after arriving on the scene, words were exchanged between the two. Ms Erer said that she was then reported to the police to give her version of events before the case went to court.

Ms Erer, who strenuously denied all accusations that her Zebby had tried to attack the woman, believed the court would find in her favour, but was actually found guilty of leaving a dog unattended, and given a 25 day suspended prison sentence

After the court case, she said: “I am just so amazed. I am 51 years of age and have never been taken to court in my life.

“I now have a criminal record in Turkey because my dog barked at someone who, I believe, was trying to kick him! What kind of justice is that?”

Ms Erer has been hugely responsible for her several years of campaigning to help the street dogs of Didim, establish a kennel for strays and educate the public, Turkish and British alike, about the street dogs.

Turkish treasury to provide help to companies

ANKARA - The Turkish Treasury is planning to provide up to 1 billion liras ($590 million) in guarantees for bank loans to companies without marking the insurance on its balance sheet, business daily Referans reported yesterday.

A Cabinet meeting in Ankara will discuss an accounting method that will only record the cost of the loan guarantees if and when the Treasury has to pay banks to cover losses on failed loans, the newspaper said. The method means the government can support lending to companies without recording the cost either on this year’s budget or on the Treasury’s borrowing, the newspaper said.

The money will be allocated to a fund partly run by a businessmen’s association and will guarantee up to 60 percent of loans banks make to companies
