Girl Guides Singapore: Young Adults Branch Our Motto: "To Serve"The YA Branch sparked off the year by putting in place its new Council, expanding its members from six to thirteen. The committees are Programme, Training, Communications, Membership and Finance. The YA Branch is represented by YAC members in other HQ branch meetings. The YA group makes effort to introduce itself to the Guides and other non-GGS communities. GGS was invited to the SMRT Cram Jam held in February. The Branch coordinated over 100 GGS Commissioners, YA and Guides and emerged the Champion in the taxi category. This act of cramming over 40 girls into a single London cabby has set GGS in the Singapore Guinness Book of Records! In April, YAs volunteered community services at the Apex Club weekly Food Distribution Programme for the elderly at Redhill Close. In June, the YA members brought along Guides from 4 schools to run a children’s camp for the Apex Club at Nanyang Girls’ High. Through the later half of the year, YAs have offered assistance to schools that requested for it.
The YAs had the rare opportunity to work, through the entire event, with professional DJ’s when they run the Song Dedication Booth at the Carnival! Enthusiastic YAs also offered their services to the young-at-heart and energetic Project 5G ladies, the Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s elderly volunteers and the grocery stall. The GBS & GGS Peace Seminar held on 17 November at the Fairfield Methodist School is another major event for the YAs where the Branch had the honour of conducting the Peace Workshop for 200 Girls Brigade and Girl Guide members from the secondary school level. The four areas covered were “What Peace?”, “Why Peace?”, “What Can Women Do for Peace?” and “Your Role”. The 20-strong YA organizing committee for the event also saw many past PGA awardees coming forth to render their skills and knowledge; amongst them, even four recipients from 2007 who were just recently awarded!
The enthusiastic spirit and warmth of the YAs continued through the GGS International Camp in late November. The all-rounded team played their roles as good ambassadors to international visitors, rendered their services at the main camp committee level right down to managing subcamps alongside school Guiders. The YA Branch took full charge of the Night Cycling, an event that brought our participants to visit famous places and historical sites of Singapore in the most unusual way, at the most unusual time! Towards the end of the year, the Branch also celebrates the completion of the Lady Baden Powell Badge by the YA Commissioner and 3 YA members. This is a collaborative testwork with the Girl Scouts (Singapore American School) and the GGS Guide Branch. The LBP Badge is commissioned by the Girl Scouts of America (New York). In 2008, the YA Branch Council will continue with its conviction “To Serve”, to bring more activities to its members! Young Adults Branch Commissioner
