| MERRY MEET!
My name is Syrus Wyndragon, and I've been dedicated to the Craft since Samhain 2001, although years before that I never doubted the
value of astrology. I'm a poster-child Aquarius. My hobbies are music (I am a guitarist in a band called "After Never"),
scuba diving, science (especially, but not limited to, astrophysics), the outdoors in general, and politics (I ran for Congress in
2000 and State Legislature in 2002 under the Libertarian Party ticket).
"Syrus Wyndragon" is my spiritual name. I won't go into a lengthy discussion about the reasoning behind choosing a
personal spiritual name (also known as a "magickal name") for one's self, although that might make for a decent article.
Come to think of it, I might just write one on that topic soon. But, briefly, I will tell you why I chose MY name.
The name "Syrus" I derived from Osiris, a god of ancient Egypt. He was torn to pieces (by a god named Set), but he overcame it.
And that describes my life in some ways. Also, the great Persian King Cyrus conquered the Middle East, but he made
sure that everyone's religious temples (destroyed by warring factions) were rebuilt. This was recorded in the Old
Testament by the Jews, but King Cyrus restored the temples of ALL religions. This, to me, is the highest example of
religious tolerance in recorded history, and I'm a firm believer in religious tolerance. So I combined the spellings of these
two into "Syrus."
As for "Wyndragon," the story isn't as interesting. I'm an Air sign (Aquarius), which accounts for the "Wynd" part of the
name. Dragons, prior to medieval mythology (which shows them as fierce beasts to be destroyed), used to symbolize
wisdom. They were the keepers of the paths to knowledge. Dragons were also known as "serpents." Ancient Greece
was famous for its oracles (such as the Temple of Apollo at Delphi), and those oracles were given by women known as
Pythian Priestesses. Another famous temple was located in Pythos. Obviously, "Pythos" and "Pythian" derive from "python,"
or "snake." It is the "dragon" aspect of my life that drives me - my search for knowledge and understanding, and my wish
that all of humankind would do the same. So that's the story of "Wyndragon."
I currently work for DaimlerChrysler at a transmission factory in Kokomo, Indiana, and live in Greentown, Indiana.
I'm also a writer for If . . . Journal, a spiritual magazine,
under my mundane name: Scott Benson.
I've been around the Sun 36 times (as of January 27th, 2006), although I'm usually (thankfully) taken to be
younger. I aim to remain always young at heart. And to me, that's what counts.
You can e-mail me by clicking the icon near the bottom of this page. I welcome any and all e-mail, and
respond when I can, usually pretty quickly.
May your stay here in this life be a pleasant one!
Blessed be!
Syrus
