Beware the Watchtower--A false Prophet organization!

WHAT IS A PROPHET?

The Watchtower Society defines a prophet of God as one whom, like Moses:

1) Speaks in Jehovah's name…

2) The things that would come to pass...

3) Thereby promoting true worship which is in harmony with God's Word.

Aid to Bible Understanding, p. 1,348

DOES THE WT PROFESS TO BE SUCH A PROPHET?

Jehovah’s Witnesses today say no, but is this true, when the Society has claimed to:

1) Be God's only mouthpiece for today;

2) Have revelations from God;

3) Be the sole group with understanding of

the Bible;

4) Be God’s only Spirit-directed

organization.

Some quotes from their own literature:

"It is of importance to every individual on earth to identify the group that Jehovah

has commissioned as His servant' or messenger." Watchtower, March 15, 1972

"Who is this prophet? . . . not one man, but a body of men and women... known at that time as International Bible Students. Today they are known as Jehovah's Christian Witnesses." Watchtower, April 1, 1972

"...the time must come, and that shortly, when those making up Christendom will know that really a 'prophet' of Jehovah was among them." The Nations Shall Know That I Am Jehovah, p. 70

"...Jehovah's organization alone, in all the earth, is directed by God's holy spirit or active force ... To it alone God's sacred Word, the Bible, is not a sealed book."

"God by his holy spirit" has directly "revealed" things to its "early Bible students ... far in advance." Watchtower. July 1, 1973

HOW CAN WE TELL A FALSE PROPHET FROM A TRUE PROPHET?

Jesus warned about false prophets in Matthew 7:15, 16, saying: "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them".

The Society itself concurs, saying: "A 'prophet' claims to have inspired information for the direction of others. A 'false prophet' would mislead others, to turn them away from God and toward false worship." Watchtower, June 15, 1974, p.381

Regarding the "fruit" of such ones, the Society further says that God "will put all false prophets to shame either by not fulfilling the false prediction of such self assuming prophets or by having His own prophecies fulfilled in a way opposite to that predicted by the false prophets."

Paradise Restored to Mankind, pp. 353-354

In addition, the Society says: "The best method of proof is to put a prophecy to the test of time and circumstance. The Bible invites such a test... the Bible ...establishes the rules for testing a prophecy at Deuteronomy 18:20-22."

Watchtower, March 1, 1965

The Watchtower’s use of Deuteronomy 18 is correct. It does, indeed, give us the criteria for judging the authenticity of someone who claims to be a prophet. It says: "But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death." You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?" If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him."

In light of these warnings, we must ask:

What has been the "fruit" produced by the Watch Tower Society?

The Society has, in fact, invited us to examine its prophecy track record, stating: "Of course, it is easy to say that this group acts as a 'prophet' of God. It is another thing to prove it. The only way that this can

be done is to review the record. What does it show?" Watchtower, April 1, 1972

What does the record show?

FALSE PROPECIES

OF THE wts

The record shows that, from its earliest beginnings, the organization has predicted specific time frames for the end of the world and the imminent return of Jesus Christ. In fact, founder, Charles Taze Russell, began to predict these events as early as 1874. Here are just a few of the major dates that have been set by the Watch Tower Society:

1914: ". . . the 'Battle of the Great Day of God Almighty' (Rev. 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership, is already

Commenced."

The Time is at Hand, 1908 ed, p.101

1925: "...Since other Scriptures definitely fix the fact there will be a resurrection of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and other faithful ones of old ... we may expect 1925 to witness the return of these faithful men of Israel from the condition of death, being resurrected and fully restored to perfect humanity and made the visible, legal

representatives of the new order of things on earth."

Millions Now Living Will Never Die, p.89

"Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures, marking the end of the typical jubilees."

Watchtower, April 1, 1923, p.106

NOTE: The WTS was so convinced that this would occur in 1925, they bought a mansion in San Diego, California, which they called Beth Sarim (meaning, House of the Princes), for the purpose of housing the resurrected patriarchs! After this prophecy failed, then President, Joseph Rutherford resided there until his death. Thereafter, the property was quietly sold. Most JWs today have no idea about this debacle!

1975: "According to this trustworthy Bible chronology six thousand years from man's creation will end in 1975." Life Everlasting, p.28

"Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end."

Kingdom Ministry, May 1974, p.3

When these events did not transpire, the Society deflected criticism without ever bailing on its false prophecies. Then, it simply spurred adherents to go on.

Regarding 1925, they said: "With great expectation Christians have looked forward to this year. Many have confidently expected that all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during the year. This may be accomplished. It may not be. In his own due time, God will accomplish his purposes concerning his own people. Christians should not be so deeply concerned about what may transpire during this year that they would fail to joyfully do what the Lord would have them to do." Watchtower, Jan. 1, 1925, p.3

"It is to be expected that Satan will try to inject into the minds of the consecrated the thought that 1925 should see an end of the work, and that therefore it would be needless for them to do more."

Watchtower, 1925, p.262

In spite of its failures, the Society continued to imply that certain years were scheduled for Armageddon and that it would only be "months away": "Receiving the sift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but

the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon."

Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1942, p.288

Oddly enough, the Society admits that such activities, when practiced by others, amount to false prophesying:

"True, there have been those in times past

who predicted an 'end to the world,' even announcing a specific date. Some have gathered groups of people with them and fled to the hills or withdrawn into their houses waiting for the end. Yet, nothing happened. The 'end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? . . . Missing from such people were God's truths and the evidence that he was guiding and using them." Awake, Oct. 8, 1968, p.23

Furthermore, they have said: "False prophets will try to hide their reason for feeling shame by denying who they really are. They will try to avoid . . . being pronounced spiritually dead by Jehovah's loyal worshipers."

Paradise Restored to Mankind, p.354

In spite of this evidence to the contrary, the Society now teaches its followers that it never claimed to be an inspired prophet!

Watchtower FALSE DOCTRINES

GOD’S NAME

WT: Jehovah is God’s true name. Superstitious Jewish Scribes removed it from the Bible, but our New World Translation faithfully restored it to the OT & inserted it in the NT where it made sense to do so. Using Jehovah’s name is essential to salvation (Rom. 10:13 NWT).

TRUTH: OT Scribes used the Hebrew consonants YHVH. Later these were combined with the vowels from "Adonai" (Lord). The result was "Yahovah", later translated "Jehovah"—A Man-Made Term! As the word has Hebrew origins, it cannot be forced into the Greek NT. In all of the Greek manuscripts we have, "Kurios" (Lord) or "Theos" (God) is used—Never Jehovah—not even when quoting the OT!

* NOTE: It is not the use of the name itself that is problematic, but how the WT uses it to skew theology!

TRINITY

WT: The word "Trinity" is not found in Scripture. The doctrine is incomprehens-ible, deceptive & confusing. It is pagan in origin and could only have originated with Satan, so as to reproach God and turn men away from Him. Trinitarians are polytheists and their God is a 3-headed freakish monster, difficult to love and worship.

TRUTH: The concept is throughout the Bible. We are baptized in the name of all three persons (Mt. 28:19). Jesus used God’s name "I AM" and the Pharisees sought to stone Him for blasphemy. (Jn. 8:57-59 cp. Ex. 3:13, 14). Only God has the power to forgive sin. Jesus often healed by forgiving sin. (1 Jn. 1:9; Mk. 2:5-7). Jesus is the creator and the Alpha & Omega (Heb. 1:2, 3; Col. 1: 16, 17; Jn. 1:1; cp Rev. 1:8 with Rev. 2:8). Jesus is Eternal Father, Mighty God, Lord (Isa. 9: 6, 7; cp.10:21; Titus 2:13; Rom. 10:9; 1 Cor. 3:12; Phil. 2:11)

HOLY SPIRIT

WT: The Holy Spirit is not a person. He is not God and is not equal to God. It is God’s "active force"—akin to electricity or wind--by which He accomplishes His will. It came upon Jesus at His baptism and enabled Him to do miracles.

TRUTH: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He has a mind (Eph 1:17; 1 Cor 2:11; Rom 8:27), a will (1 Cor. 12:11; Acts 16:6), & is able to be grieved (Eph. 4:30). He performs the actions of a person:

--As a Teacher (JN 14:26; 15:26)

--As a Counselor (JN 16:7, 8)

--He can be lied to (Acts 5: 3, 4)

--He lives (1 Cor. 3:16)

--He fellowships (2 Cor. 13: 14; Rom. 8:14)

Scripture speaks of us as having God, Christ, AND the Holy Spirit ALL within us. (Cp. Eph. 2:22; 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Cor. 3:17)

He also intercedes in prayer for us, just as Jesus does (Rom.8:26 cp Heb. 7:25)

JESUS

Jesus is a created being, thus making Him a ‘son’ of God. He is the highest ranking angel: the arch-angel, Michael. He is and always has been submissive to the father--they are in no way equal. He was not an incarnation of God, but merely a perfect man. (NOTE: The WT claims that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are not equal to God in an attempt to destroy the Trinity doctrine.)

TRUTH:

* Heb. 1:5— "To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son’?"

* Dan. 10:13 indicates that there is a class of arch-angels and Michael is one of them.

* Phil. 2: 5-11 Jesus divested himself of His glory to take on the cloak of humanity. (ASK: Does v. 9-11 mean that His name is above Jehovah’s name, or that He’s Deity?)

* Col. 1:15-20--Jesus is before ALL things. (NOTE: The NWT inserts the word "other" 5 times in this passage: "all other things") to strip Him of His role as the Creator.

v. 19—the fullness of God dwelled in Him. * NOTE: "Firstborn" (v 15) means supremacy or pre-eminence (in v. 19).

CHRIST’S RESURRECTION

WT: Jesus died when His spirit went out of Him, but since He didn’t return to heaven right then (Lk. 23:46), He obviously stayed in the grave until He was raised 3 days later. (NOTE: To the WT, this also proves that Jesus was merely a mortal man.)

Jesus was resurrected as a spirit because flesh & blood cannot inherit the kingdom (1 Cor. 15:50).

Jesus took on and discarded physical bodies so that he could appear to His disciples and show His wounds to Thomas. That’s why His disciples thought He was a ghost and did not recognize Him.

TRUTH: There is a difference between a spirit (like God) and a spiritual (glorified, resurrected) body:

A spirit does not eat as the risen Christ did (Lk. 24:36-43). A spirit does not have hands and feet, or flesh and bone, as the risen Christ did (Lk. 24: 39, 40)

The disciples did not think they’d seen an apparition. They just couldn’t believe their eyes (v 40)--they knew He said He would rise, but apparently required physical evidence to fully believe it.

The context reveals that the disciples’ eyes were kept from recognizing Him (veiled).

SOUL SLEEP

WT: Man is a soul (a living being)—He does not have a soul. Body + Life force (breath) = Soul (1 Pet. 3:20; Gen. 9:5; Josh. 11:11). People die and return to dust just like animals do (Gen. 3:19). That we don’t die is Satan’s lie (Gen. 3:4). The dead are conscious of nothing (Eccl. 9: 5, 6). This is true of both righteous and unrighteous dead, until the resurrection on judgment day. The dead are merely "asleep" (unconscious), until they are resurrected (1 Thess. 4:13-17)

TRUTH: The Hebrew word for soul (Nephesh) is used in a variety of ways: A living person; man’s immaterial nature (Gen 35:18 KJV); the "inner man" (seat of emotions (Dt. 28:65; Job 30:25; 3:20; Ps. 13:2; 6:3; 42:6; 43:5; 86: 4; Gen. 42:21; 2 Kings 4:27).

In context with the rest of Scripture, we know that man does have an immaterial nature: Mt. 10:28; Rev. 6:9, 10 (Heb. Nephesh = Gk Psuche). Lk. 23:46—in context, Pneuma (translated as "spirit") can only mean soul. Since Jesus was not raised for 3 days, His human soul must have gone to the father (cp Acts 7:59; see also: Lk. 20:38; Phil.1:21-23).

Gen. 3:19 refers to physical, bodily death: the body was formed from the dust while the spirit/soul/life force came from God. The punishment for sin was aging, the failing of their physical bodies, and death. Satan is the one who denied that God would make good on this pronouncement.

* Eccl. 9:5, 6 is from the standpoint of carnal man who does not know God. From that standpoint, everything is vanity (futile), which is the premise of Ecclesiastes.

* "Sleep" applies to body only. The soul does not pass into a state of unconscious-ness. It is also a fallacy to say that sleep is a state of unconsciousness.

PARADISE EARTH

WT: In the aftermath of Armageddon, surviving JWs will work to clean up the earth and will restore it to the garden-like conditions of Eden. All JWs living there will gradually be restored to a state of perfection like Adam and Eve enjoyed. From heaven, the 144,000 will reign over the "Great Crowd" who will live forever on the earth. If anyone sins, they will be killed immediately.

TRUTH:

* The context of Mt. 6:10 refers to things Jesus was asking for His disciples right then.

* Ps. 37: 9, 11, 29—The Heb word Eres, in this context, refers to the land of Judea which God had given Israel as an enduring inheritance. The Hebrew word for "forever" (‘ad), in the OT, is often used to indicate that a promise would endure for generations.

* Ps. 115:16—In context, God had given the earth to all men to rule over (cp. Ps. 8:6-8; Gen. 1:28). All who are born again look forward to living with Christ in heaven (Jn.12:26).

SALVATION BY WORKS

WT: Salvation may be obtained if one clings to and unquestioningly obeys the organization and remains active in service to it—a works-based gospel. Jas. 2:26 says that faith without works is dead. Therefore, you will die if you do not do works. Phil. 2:12 says we must "work out" our salvation.

TRUTH:

* Eph. 2:8, 9—Salvation is by Grace alone (cp Titus 3:5; Gal. 2:16). Human righteous-ness is as "filthy rags" before God (Isa. 64:6). Salvation comes only by believing in Christ (Acts 16: 30, 31; JN 3:15; 5:24; 11:25; 20:31), not in man or an organization.

* Jas. 2:26 is not speaking of salvation. James is pointing out that works are evidence that our faith is truly alive.

* Phil. 2:12—In context: the church at Philippi had real problems in Paul’s absence. Paul was urging them to work hard to preserve the unity of the congregation.

WITNESSING TIPS

Demon possession and Jesus’ name--WT v. the Bible

I. WT QUOTES (Note: The WT encourages using Jehovah’s--not Jesus’—name. Is this scriptural?):

Happiness, How to Find It, p. 121--turn to J, in prayer, using His name—nothing about Jesus.

Unseen Spirits, Do they Help Us, or Harm Us, p. 25—Omits key part of Scripture that says that Paul uses the name of Jesus to command spirit to come out of slave girl harassing Apostles.

WT 4/15/06, p. 31 in Q from Readers—Nothing about Jesus’ name in whole article.

What Does the Bible Really Teach (in the article: "How to Resist Wicked Spirits")—nothing at all about using Jesus’

WT 11/15/05 (in the article: "How Real is the Devil to You?"), p. 6, 7—knowledge, contact JWs for study—nothing about Jesus.

You Can Live Forever (in the chapter: "Resisting Wicked Spirit Attacks"), p. 96, 97—recommends that we just say "Go away, Satan", and use Jehovah’s name—no mention of using Christ’s name.

II. WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS:

Mk 9:38, 39--And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. 39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is on our part.

Mk. 16:17--And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Lk. 10:17--And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

Acts 16:16--And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

III. WHY IS JESUS’ NAME SO EFFECTIVE WHEN DEALING WITH DEMONS?

Phil. 2:10--That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

1 Pet. 3:22—Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

IV. WE NEED NOT BE IN FEAR OF WICKED SPIRIT FORCES, IF WE HAVE CHRIST WITHIN

A. We are more than conquerors through Christ/He is more powerful than any wicked spirits (Rom. 8:37-39)

B. Rather than being immobilized with fear regarding demons, Scripture says we should:

    1. By submitting ourselves to God, resist the devil and he WILL flee from us:
JAS 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the DEVIL, and he will flee from us.

    2. Not give the devil a foothold into our lives:
EPH 4:27 Neither give place to the DEVIL.

    3. Put on the whole armor from God, so we can withstand any attacks:

EPH 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the DEVIL. For we wrestle not against  flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

     4. Resist the devil in faith:

1 Pet. 5: 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

V. CONCLUSION

1. We don't have to let the devil have power over us if we:

a. Submit ourselves to God (Jas. 4:7)
b. Don't give the devil opportunity (Eph. 4:27)
c. Put on the whole armor from God (Eph. 6:12-18)
d. Resist in faith (1 Pet. 5:8, 9)

2. While we don’t want to intentionally engage the devil in battle, there is no need to fear him or his angels.

3. The Apostles cast out demons in Christ's name, and we can use Jesus' name, too, if we come up against the devil.

4. True believers have Christ indwelling them and this makes us more than conquerors through Him (Rom. 8:37-39).

5. People in the WT often report coming under demonic attack. If they are unable to resist the devil and make him flee from them, as the Bible says, then it is apparent that they must not be submitting themselves to God, must not have Christ indwelling them, etc. Otherwise, they would be able to resist, as the Scriptures say.

6. True Christians do not suffer from such attacks, but if they come into contact with persons under demonic control, they are able to rebuke the demons in Jesus’ name, thereby ending the matter.

7. JWs who suffer demonic attack and use Jehovah’s name, most often do not find relief.

8. The name Jehovah is used by occultists, Free Masons, and was used by the modern father of the occult, Aleister Crowley, who even speaks about the name in his books.

IS JESUS MICHAEL THE ARCH-ANGEL?

IS JESUS MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL?

I. DID THE APOSTLES OF CHRIST BELIEVE THAT JESUS WAS/HAD BEEN AN ANGEL?

First, we must realize that there are other versions of Jesus Christ floating around which are FALSE, and this has been the case since the beginning of church history. The Apostle Paul, all the way back in the first century, warned:

2 Corinthians 11: 3, 4—" But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with [REJECT] him."

How, then, do we determine whether we believe in the Jesus of the Bible or in some false version of Jesus? Paul says that if other versions of Jesus do not stack up with what he and the other Apostles of Christ taught, then such must be rejected as originating from "another spirit". He clearly identifies that "other spirit" as being none other than the serpent who deceived Eve in Eden. Therefore, what we believe about the nature and person of Jesus Christ is certainly a serious matter!

The fact is. That there is not one verse of Scripture anywhere from which we can conclude that any of the apostles ever proclaimed that Jesus was Michael the Archangel. In fact, the Apostle Paul spent time combating the erroneous teachings of the Sadducees, who taught that He had been an angel in His pre-existence. In refuting this teaching, Paul said:

Hebrews 1: 5-6, 13—"For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the first-begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him." And, again, he restates this in verse 13, saying: "But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?"

Paul makes it clear, in this passage, that:

1.God does not call angels "Son" as He called Jesus. While some Bible translations refer to angels as sons of God (Genesis 6:2-4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7), it is only Jesus whom God calls His only-begotten Son (John 3:16-18; 1 John 4:9).
2. ALL the angels worship JESUS; and,

3. God has not invited any angel to sit at His right hand, as co-ruler—only Jesus occupies this position of authority and power.

In chapter 2 of Hebrews, Paul goes on to state that Jesus—not any of the angels—will have all things in subjection to Him. In fact, since Jesus will have ALL things--including all things in heaven--in subjection to Him, this will include the angels. Furthermore, that Jesus has never had the "nature of angels" is also evident in verse 16:

Hebrews 2: 5, 8, 16 For unto the angels he hath not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. [But, speaking of Jesus:] 8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him [including the angels]. But now we see not yet all things put under him. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

The Apostle Peter also affirms that angels will be subject to Jesus:

1 Peter 3:22—"Who [Jesus] is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him."

II. JESUS IS TO BE WORSHIPPED—ANGELS ARE NOT TO BE WORSHIPPED

Angels who are sent by God say that they are not to be worshipped:

Revelation 22:8, 9—"And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God."

The Apostle Paul says that angels are not to be worshipped:

Colossians 2: 18—"Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind"

In fact, Paul says that glorified saints shall judge angels and Peter says that the apostles had divinely given knowledge of the Gospel that even the angels did not have:

1 Corinthians 6:2, 3—"Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?" [IF JESUS IS AN ANGEL, WILL WE JUDGE HIM TOO?]

1 Peter 1:12—"Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into". [IF JESUS WERE AN ANGEL, DID HE NOT HAVE THE SAME FULL REVELATION OF THE GOSPEL THAT THE APOSTLES HAD?]

While Scripture says that we are not to worship angels, when it comes to Jesus, Scripture says:

Philippians 2: 9—"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Jesus also accepted worship (Matthew 8:2; 28.9) but He Himself said to worship only God (Matthew 4:10). A contradiction?? Blasphemy?? Not if He WAS God? One thing is certain: God is certainly not a mere (created) angel, but is eternal and the creator of all creatures. Therefore, if Jesus was, indeed, affirming His divinity, this makes Him Creator, not created being.

Finally, while scripture never says that Jesus is an angel, it does say that He HAS angels who work for Him:

Matthew 13: 41—"The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity"

2 Thessalonians 1:7—"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels"

III. WHO IS MICHAEL ANYWAY?

  • Michael is ONE in a CLASS of angels:

Daniel 10:13—"But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia."

One of the "chief princes"? How large that group is, we are not told. But the fact that Michael is one among equals proves that he is not totally unique, unlike God’s only-begotten Son.

Since Scripture interprets Scripture, we can use this concept to help us to interpret what is conveyed by the singular form of "archangel" as used in 1 Thessalonians 4:16, which adherents to this doctrine like to reference. There, we read: "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first."

Does this verse prove that Jesus is Michael and that Michael is the only Archangel in existence?

No, because while the term occurs here in the singular, it also appears with a definite article (THE archangel). In his book, Angels: Elect and Evil, theologian Fred Dickason notes that "the definite article with archangel does not necessarily limit the class of archangel to Michael. The article may be one of identification as the well-known archangel instead of limitation as the only archangel. There may be others of the same class or rank, since he is described as ‘one of the chief princes’ (Dan. 10:13)."

(From: Fred Dickason, Angels: Elect and Evil, Chicago: Moody Press, 1975, p. 68)

Furthermore, if we are to take Christ’s coming with the voice of an archangel as proof that He is an archangel, then what do we do with the phrase "with the trump of God"? Does this phrasing, in and of itself, imply that He is God, since He comes with the trump of God? No Trinitarian would ever point to this phrase to prove Christ’s deity, but would, instead, refer to copious other passages that affirm the doctrine. That is because such phrasing, by itself, is not conclusive when it is not supported by other passages of Scripture. Not only must we base Biblical interpretation on the immediate CONTEXT of the passage surrounding the verse itself, but the passage must also be interpreted within the context of Biblical doctrine on the whole. If any interpretation cannot be reconciled with other passages of Scripture, it simply cannot be the correct interpretation, for God does not contradict Himself.

  • Michael is the angelic protector of the nation of Israel:

Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people [DANIEL’S PEOPLE WERE THE JEWS]: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book."

  • Michael is unable to do some things that Jesus clearly did do. While Jesus rebuked Satan three times, in Luke chapter 4, Micahel could not:

Jude 1:9—"Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."

Nor can angels judge wicked men, as Jesus will do:

2 Peter 2:11—"Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord."

  • That Jesus and the Michael, who wars with Satan in heaven, are not the same person is evident in the context of Revelation chapter 12:

Revelation 12:5-7—"And she [ISRAEL] brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. [THIS IS JESUS! Thereafter, described as the "lamb" in chapters 14, 17, 19, as well as the "Son of Man, King of kings and Lord of Lords, and The Word, but NEVER as Michael!] 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael [NOT THE SAME PERSON AS IN VERSE 5] and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels"

IV. DID THE EARLY CHURCH BELIEVE THAT JESUS WAS EVER AN ANGEL?

The following is an excerpt from http://www.macgregorministries.org/jehovahs_witnesses/michaelbecomesjesus.html

Some of the Ante-Nicene Fathers from the first three centuries of the Christian Church offered these statements from their writings:

"[Almighty God] did not, as one might have imagined, send to men any servant, or angel, or ruler..." Mathetes - Epistle to Diognetus, ch.7

" ...God speaks in the creation of man with the very same design, in the following words: 'Let Us make man after our image and likeness...[God] conversed with some one who was numerically distinct from Himself, and also a rational Being. These are the words: 'And God said, Behold, Adam has become as one of us, to know good and evil.' In saying, therefore, 'as one of us,'[Moses] has declared that [there is a certain] number of persons associated with one another, and that they are at least two. For I would not say that the dogma of that heresy which is said to be among you is true, or that the teachers of it can prove that [God] spoke to angels, or that the human frame was the workmanship of angels. But this Offspring, which was truly brought forth from the Father, was with the Father before all the creatures,..." Justin Martyr - Dialogue with Trypho, ch. 62

CHAP. II--THE WORLD WAS NOT FORMED BY ANGELS, OR BY ANY OTHER BEING, CONTRARY TO THE WILL OF THE MOST HIGH GOD, BUT WAS MADE BY THE FATHER THROUGH THE WORD.

"Those, moreover, who say that the world was formed by angels, or by any other maker of it, contrary to the will of Him who is the Supreme Father, err first of all in this very point, that they maintain that angels formed such and so mighty a creation, contrary to the will of the Most High God." Irenaus Against Heresies, Book II, ch. 2, section 1

"He created and made all things by His Word, while He neither required angels to assist Him in the production of those things which are made, nor of any power greatly inferior to Himself, and ignorant of the Father," Irenaus Against Heresies, Book II, ch. 2, section 4

"He (Moses) at first narrated the formation of the world in these words: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," and all other things in succession; but neither gods nor angels [had any share in the work]." Irenaus Against Heresies, Book II, ch.2, section 5

"For the Son, who is the Word of God, arranged these things beforehand from the beginning, the Father being in no want of angels, in order that He might call the creation into being, and form man," Irenaus Against Heresies, Book IV, ch. 7, section 4

"It was not angels, therefore, who made us, nor who formed us, neither had angels power to make an image of God, nor any one else, except the Word of the Lord," Irenaus Against Heresies, Book IV, ch. 20, section 1

"...and that this world belongs to Him (the Word of God), and was made by Him, according to the Father's will, and not by angels;" Irenaus Against Heresies, Book V, ch. 18, section 2

"The Logos, too, before the creation of men, was the Framer of angels." Tatian, Address to the Greeks, ch VII

V. WHO BELIEVES THAT JESUS IS MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL?

JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES & JOHANNES GREBER

(THE SPIRIT MEDIUM THEY USED TO SUPPORT THIER FALSE CLAIMS REGARDING CHRIST)

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus was the Archangel Michael before He came to earth and was the first being created by Jehovah, through whom he made the universe, the angels and mankind. While on earth, Jesus was merely a sinless man, who gave his perfect life in return for the perfect life lost by Adam. After his death on the "torture stake" [JWS REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE CROSS], He was resurrected as a spirit person, while his body returned to the dust of the earth. They base this conclusion on the fact that the Bible refers to both Michael and Jesus as leading angelic armies. However, when unable to supply any verses that specifically state that Jesus is Michael, they will admit that they have merely "deduced" this idea. In doing so, however, they have gone well beyond the conclusive scope of God’s Word.

Johannes Greber was an ex-priest, turned spirit medium, who wrote a Bible translation based on the doctrines given him by his spirit messengers. The Watchtower Society quoted his translation for 30 some years, even after they discovered his spiritistic practices, simply because his doctrines agreed with theirs. Like the Watchtower, Greber denied the divinity of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity--because his channeled spirits told him these doctrines were false!

Here is an excerpt from the web article on Greber, which analyzes his book, Communication with the Spirit World of God: (NOTE: Some of these statements are also Mormon beliefs).

Jesus is said to be the first created "son of God". (p. 267)

The second 'son of God' is 'Lucifer' the "Light-bearer". (p. 267)

Christ and Lucifer are therefore "brothers". (p. 271)

God created Christ and then all [other] things were created by and through Christ. (pp. 267-8) Adam was once a "high prince in heaven" before coming to earth.

The spirit also said that demons or fallen angels can and will be saved. This would occur after a process of spiritual evolution by reincarnation. Even Lucifer will be saved and be like his "brother" Jesus. (p. 297)

It was his brother Jesus who volunteered among God's angels to make the first attempt to save mankind. In fact, He "begged" God to be the first. If He failed, God would've sent other spirits until the mission was accomplished. (pp. 297-8)

Christ is the highest of the spirits created by God and the sole one to be created directly. ... Christ Himself was not God, but only the first of God’s sons. ... Christ is the highest spirit which the omnipotent God could create. Christ ... is the first created "son of God", and as such, His highest and most perfect Creature. (Page 301, and Page 267)

(See the entire article on Johannes Greber at http://www.seanet.com/~raines/greber.html.)

This doctrine of Jesus as Michael the Archangel lays the groundwork for the denial of Christ’s divinity.

How so? By turning Him into a mere created being, He cannot, at the same time, be Creator of all things. Thus, this tactic has proven useful to the Watchtower Society, which rejects the Trinity doctrine. Any one who believes in the Trinity CANNOT accept that Jesus is Michael, because this would mean that Jesus is not God but was created by God. Trinitarian theology, therefore, negates this entire concept. Thus, only anti-Trinitarians can hold this view.

SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS

Charles Taze Russell, who was the founder of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, had a history of being affilated with a sect of Adventism known as the Second Adventists, or Millerites. The Seventh Day Adventists, however, also share the view that Jesus is Michael the Archangel. They, like their founder, Ellen G. White, also openly deny that Jesus is Almighty God, which is part and parcel of the doctrine of the Tri-unity of God.

MORMONS

Mormons believe that Michael lived on earth as Adam. Adam was his mortal name and Michael was his pre-incarnate and post-mortal name. That means that all of Adam’s descendents (the human race) are actually descendents of Michael. Mormons believe that, since Michael can be translated "who is like God", and mankind is created in the image of God, then God must have a fleshly body, as we do. Launching from this platform, Brigham Young went on to preach that Michael/Adam helped to create the world, came here with a spiritual purpose, and is now an exalted man (a god). This "divine revelation" supported the idea that men can become gods in their own right, which is a foundational teaching of Mormonism.

SATANISM (I KID YOU NOT!)

In his book, "Satan, Prince of This World", William Guy Carr gives us a glimpse into the teachings and practices inherent in the Satanic Black Mass. He says that adepts are taught that:

  1. Satan is the eldest son of God (Adonay) and the brother of Michael;
  2. Michael, the archangel is the same as Jesus Christ; and,
  3. God sent Michael to earth in the form of Jesus Christ to stop the Luciferian conspiracy on earth.

The following are excerpts from Carr’s book:

The second part of the Black Mass perpetuates the defeat of Christ by Satan. Adepts are taught that Satan is the eldest son of God (Adonay) and the brother of St. Michael. The Luciferian dogma teaches that St. Michael, the archangel is one and the same celestial being as Jesus Christ and states that God (Adonay) sent St. Michael to earth in the form of Jesus Christ in order that he could halt the Luciferian conspiracy on this earth as he had done in heaven. (Pg. 45)

Further, the Luciferian doctrine teaches adepts in the highest degrees of Grand Orient Lodges, and the Councils of [Albert] Pike’s New and Reformed Palladian Rite, that God had two sons. They refer to God the Creator, as Adonai, or Adonay. They identify His sons as Satan and St. Michael the Archangel. They claim that Satan accepted the Luciferian ideology because he considered it more practical than his Father’s plan for the rule of the Universe. The Luciferian theologians claim that Satan is the elder brother of St. Michael. They admit that St. Michael, whom they term "the upstart," and "Le Parvenu," did cause Lucifer to be cast out of heaven. But the Luciferian doctrine also claims that by this very act Lucifer was elevated to become God of that part of the Universe we commonly designate as HELL, and that he is therefore the equal of Adonay. (pg. 11)

In addition to claiming that Satan is the eldest son of God (Adonay), and the older brother of Jesus Christ, also claim that Jesus Christ is one and the same person as St. Michael the Archangel. (pg. 14)

VI. WHY DOES SATAN PROMOTE THIS DECEPTION?

As we have seen, the Apostle Paul says that Satan’s purpose is to deceive (2 Cor 11.14). He is especially adept at inventing lies about God, His character, and His nature, just as he has done from the beginning. (Read Genesis chapter 3). If Satan can use the religious leaders to aid in his deception, he will certainly do so (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

It does not fit in with Satan’s purpose for people to know that:

"In Him [Christ] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." (Col. 2.9)

"In the beginning was the Word [JESUS WAS NOT A CREATED BEING], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

(John 1:1,14)

He is the firstborn over ALL creation (Col. 1:15) since through Him all things were made. (John 1:3).

Jesus came to earth in order to reveal God to man: "If you have seen me, you have seen the Father." (Jn 14.9).

Why does what we believe about Jesus matter to Satan???

Because, when we know these things, we also realize that at the name of Jesus every knee must bow (Philippians 2: 9). Satan does not want this! He has always wanted this worship to be his!!

Furthermore, it is important to know the true Christ of Scripture, because Christianity is not about being in a religion. It is about having a personal relationship with our Lord and Creator, Jesus Christ. But, just as in human relationships, we can't have a relationship with someone whom we don’t know. Without that relationship, we cannot be safe from the snares the devil sets for us. 1 Peter 5:6-8 warns, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."

TOUGH QUESTIONS FOR ADHERENTS OF THIS THEOLOGY

If you believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel, please take a moment to consider these questions:

1. How did Michael the Archangel become Jesus? The Bible in no way indicates that the Holy Spirit took an angel and put him in Mary’s womb.

2. What is Jesus’ form since His ascension? Was he raised up as an angel once again? (See Luke 24:39; John 2:19-21).

3. Since John 1:1 teaches that Christ (the Word) is eternal and was with the Father from the beginning, how do you reconcile this with Scriptures that speak of angels being created beings? Since they are created, they can not be eternal, as the Word is eternal.

4. Why does Hebrews 1:4-6 state that Jesus is superior to the angels in every way if he is merely an angel Himself? How can ALL angels worship Him if He is an angel?

5. Why does God command all of the angels to worship the Son (Hebrews 1:6), when He also makes it clear that we are to worship Him alone (Exodus 20; Matthew 4:10)?

6. Since Scripture teaches that Jesus is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Heb. 13:8), then how can it be said that Jesus was an angel, became a man, and then became an angel again?

If you have been subscribing to this false doctrine and now feel confused about the nature and deity of Jesus Christ, I would urge you to pray for God to send His Spirit of Truth to reveal the truth to you. Jesus promised He would do this in John 16:13, where we read: "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AS PART OF A TRIUNE GOD

Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in the Trinity—the Christian doctrine of three distinct persons within the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Furthermore, they teach that the Holy Spirit is not a person, but God’s "active force", by which He accomplishes what He wills. They argue that, like the effect and power electricity or wind, the Holy Spirit is simply an invisible force that is displayed through visible acts that make its existence evident. Let’s examine the pros and cons of this doctrine using, as always, Holy Scriptures as our navigating aid.

Jehovah’s Witnesses argue:

1. How can one person fill thousands of people at the same time, as the Bible says the Holy Spirit did at Pentecost (Acts chapter 2)?
2. Why doesn’t the Holy Spirit have a personal name, like God (Jehovah) and His Son (Jesus)?

The Bible shows:

1. The Holy Spirit is a person—the third person of the Trinity. He is God.
2. The Holy Spirit has a personality, like any person.
3. The argument about His lack of a proper name, in scripture, is arbitrary and capricious.
4. The argument about being unable to fill a group of people is also arbitrary and capricious.

The Scriptural defense: (italics and highlighting added)

Point 1: The Holy Spirit is a person—the third person of the Trinity. He is God.
Acts 5: 3, 4—Lying to the Holy Spirit is equated to lying to God. "But Peter said, "Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Spirit . . . Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God."

2 Corinthians 3: 17—"Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

Hebrews 3: 7-9—"Wherefore, as the Holy Spirit saith, "Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of trial in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the test, proved me, and saw my works forty years’." In this passage, God is speaking to the generation of Old Testament Hebrews who came out of Egypt but who were not allowed to enter into Canaan. Because of their unbelief and disloyalty to God, they were sentenced to wandering around in the wilderness for 40 years. Here, the Holy Spirit speaks to them AS YAHWEH, or God the Father. There are plenty of other references, as well, where the Holy Spirit, in the New Testament, is equated to the Yahweh of the Old Testament and is said to have done the things that He did (see Acts 7: 48-51, 28: 25-27, just to name a couple).

Mark 3: 29; Matt. 12:32—Speaking against the Holy Spirit is BLASPHEMY and will not be forgiven. What is the dictionary definition of "blasphemy"? "A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God" (American Heritage Dictionary 2nd college ed.) Yes, according to Scripture, the Holy Spirit is divine. Offending Him is equated to offending God.

The Holy Spirit has all the attributes of deity; He is omniscient (all-knowing), omnipresent (everywhere at once), and omnipotent (all-powerful). He is holy and eternal (had no beginning nor end to His existence, just like God Himself). See Psalm 139: 7 (omnipresent);
1 Corinthians 2: 10 (omniscient); Romans 15: 19 (omnipotent); John 16: 7-14 (holy); Hebrews 9: 14 (eternal).

The Holy Spirit does things that only God can do. He participated in creating the world (Gen. 1: 2, 3; Isaiah 40: 12-14). He participated in creating humankind (Job 33:4; Psalm 104:30). He begat Jesus in Mary’s womb (Luke 1: 35). He inspired Scripture (2 Timothy 3: 16; 2 Peter1: 21).

Clearly, then, Scripture shows the Holy Spirit to be equal to God, having all the attributes of God, and doing things that ONLY God has the ability to do. The evidence points to the unmistakable conclusion that the Holy Spirit can be no other than God Himself.

Point 2: The Holy Spirit has a personality, like any person. A "force" does NOT have a personality.

The Holy Spirit possesses intellect: He "searches (investigates) all things" (1 Corinthians 2: 10); He gives wisdom and understanding (Isaiah 11: 2; Ephesians 1: 7); He makes intercession for us and searches our hearts (Romans 8: 27). It is clear from Scripture, therefore, that the Holy Spirit possesses a mind—something only a person can possess.

Besides intellect, the Holy Spirit also possesses emotions. For example, He can be "grieved" (Ephesians 4: 30). The Holy Spirit also possesses a will (1 Corinthians 12: 11).
Furthermore, the Holy Spirit does things that only a person, not a force, can do: He teaches believers (John 14: 26). He testifies (John 15: 26). He leads us (Romans 8: 4). He sends us to do His will (Acts 13: 4; Acts 8: 29). He restrains sin (Genesis 6: 3, compare 2 Thessalonians 2:7). He intercedes in prayer for us, just like Christ does (Romans 7: 25; 8: 26). He inspired the writing of Scripture (2 Peter 1: 21).

Point 3: The argument about His lack of a proper name, in scripture, is arbitrary and capricious.

The Holy Spirit applies personal pronouns to Himself. See Acts 13: 2—". . . the Holy Spirit said, ‘separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work unto which I have called them’." Notice the use of the personal pronouns "I" and "me". These pronouns are only used when we refer to a PERSON.

Additionally, the verse says that the Holy Spirit spoke ("said"), something only a person can do. He also speaks of calling these men to do His will. Does electricity or the wind speak, call people for its purpose, or have a will? Certainly, then, the Holy Spirit considers Himself a person! Furthermore, Paul and Branabas obeyed the commission He gave them. Can a person obey the wind or electricity? Can wind or electricity even issue a command?

Spiritual beings are not always referred to with proper names in Scripture. There are few instances when demons, for example, are referred to with proper names (i.e. Mark 5: 9. Even so, the name "Legion" was not so much a name as a description of the number of demons this man was possessed with). Still, most often, demons are referred to by their quality, with terms like "wicked" or "unclean". Likewise, the Holy Spirit is referred to by His quality, that of holiness.

When a child refers to his/her parent, when speaking to someone else about them, he/she refers to them as "Mom" or "Dad", or as "my father", or "my mother". We don’t call our parents by their proper name but by a description or who they are to us. Similarly, the Holy Spirit, being a distinct person within the triune Godhead, is described by who He is, just as we very often refer to God as our "Father" and Jesus as His "Son". The Holy Sprit, then, is the Spirit of God who guides us and leads us in all holiness. This name describes WHO He is, just as the terms "mom" and "dad" describe who our parents are to us.

In Matthew 28:19, we are commissioned to baptize disciples in the NAME OF "the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". We are commissioned to baptize in the name of all three PERSONS. The Father and the Son are undeniably persons. By the context of this verse, then, so also is the Holy Spirit. The verse could just as well be read: "in the name of the father, and in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit", due to the personal element being so obviously denoted in each of these three phrases.

Point 4: The argument about a person being unable to fill a group of people is also arbitrary and capricious.

Ephesians 3: 19—God is spoken of as filling all of the Ephesian believers.

Ephesians 4: 10—Christ is spoken of as filling all things. (See also Ephesians 1: 23)

No one (not even Jehovah’s Witnesses) denies that both God and Christ are persons and, yet, Scripture speaks of them as filling multiple believers or multiple things at the same time. Why, then, do the Jehovah’s Witnesses profess that the Holy Spirit cannot be a person since he filled multiple believers at Pentecost?

IN SUMMARY: The Bible proves that the Holy Spirit is a PERSON. Since He is a person, He also has personality, another fact proven in Scripture. Any argument or conclusion to the contrary can be proven (1 Thessalonians 5: 21), by the Scriptures, to be both arbitrary and capricious.

By Way of Comparison:

In the Awake magazine dated 12/8/73, the Watchtower Society said: "Is the Devil a personification or a person?. . .Can an unintelligent 'force' carry on a conversation with a person? . . . only an intelligent person could. . . . 'Every quality, every action, which can indicate personality, is attributed to him in language which cannot be explained away'."

We can use this same argument, presented by the WTS itself, to prove that the Holy Spirit is a person and not an "active force" or a "personification", as the WT teaches. If the argument works to prove the Devil is a person, then, why not the Holy Spirit???

Misinterpretation of Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6

ECCLESIASTES 9: 6, 7

This is the JW "proof" text to support their "soul sleep" doctrine, which they use to try to refute both the doctrine that our souls survive beyond death, and the doctrine of hell.

Here is the text from their NWT monstrosity compared with KJV:

NWT: For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. Also their love, and their hate, and their jealousy have already perished; and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has been done under the sun.

KJV: For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy are now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun.

First of all, with JWs, I INSIST on using the KJV, as they generally will accept that translation above the rest of those of "Christendom". Furthermore, I have seen more people led out of bondage via the KJV than any other translation. Having said that, let's look at a couple of major differences between these passages:

NWT: neither do they anymore have wages

KJV: neither have they any more a reward

This is a HUGE difference. The NWT attempts to make it sound like people will not earn wages for the work they were doing on earth (obviously). But, this is not at all what KJV says. KJV's wording speaks of eternal rewards. Now at this point, you can ask the JW if they believe this is true? Do they really believe that we will not be rewarded for following God in this life? Of course, that is NOT what they believe. They believe that at least the JWs will be rewarded for faithful service. Here, we begin to chip away at the argument.

NWT: because the remembrance of them has been forgotten

KJV: for the memory of them is forgotten

Here, the NWT attempts to make us think that the dead person does not have a memory. However, we know that the soul's survival means that the person does retain such things as emotions, will, memories, etc. KJV does not say that the individual has no more memory, it says that the memory OF THEM is forgotten, conveying the idea that eventually people stop being overwhelmed with grief over our deaths. As time goes on, survivors dwell on our deaths less and less, as they begin to accept and recover from it.

NWT: they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has been done under the sun

KJV: neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun

Here, the NWT toys with the language by substituting "time indefinite" (as in an undisclosed period of time) for "forever". This way, they can get away with saying that they will indeed receive a "portion" or reward for their earthly works at some point in time, which has not been divulged to us yet. That is NOT what the KJV says. It says that they will NEVER receive a portion (reward)-forever. Now, I know this seems to contradict Scriptures that say that we will indeed receive a reward. So, now we have to reconcile this matter. Here's how:

The book of Ecclesiastes presents two viewpoints: A secular point of view, from the standpoint of a person who does not know God. Such a person takes the stance that the author of Ecclesiastes does from chapter one--that "everything is vanity". Throughout, he conveys the old axiom "let's eat and drink and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die." This is not how a person with a personal relationship with his creator views life and it is also not the viewpoint of the author Ecclesiastes, by the time he gets to the end of his life and the end of the book.

As you read this book, you see that, as he comes to be more spiritually minded, his viewpoint changes. The change in tone is nowhere more evident than in the final chapter. From chapter 12, verse one, we find him encouraging his son to "remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw near when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them". Then, he sums up, in verses 13 and 14 with: "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

Notice how mention of judgment here seems to contradict what was said in chapter 9, verse 6, which says, "neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun". At this point I ask the JW if he thinks that the Bible contradicts itself. He will say no. Then, I ask if the Bible always speaks truth. They will say yes. Then ask them to reconcile these two verses. They CANNOT unless they are willing to acknowledge that Solomon is speaking from a human perspective, devoid of divine revelation and knowledge, at the beginning of this book.

Finally, you can take them back to Eccl. 9: 5,6 and ask them if they can see that this attitude would be something that someone without God would entertain. If they balk, remind them of the phrase in the KJV that says "neither have they any more a portion FOREVER". Keep hammering this point home, as they do believe in an "everlasting life" of sorts.

If they allow you to go any further, then this would be the time to emphasize that they did say that the Bible does not contradict itself. From there, go on to share other passages regarding eternal life, heaven, hell, etc.

Attention JW's: Pertinent Questions for Easter Time

Every year, during Passover, Jehovah's Witnesses' have the Memorial Supper to commemorate Christ's death.  This raises some questions to which I have found that even the elders haven't been able to provide an answer that makes sense to me.  I base my question on two scriptures:  Luke 22:10, where Jesus says to keep celebrating the memorial of his death "in remembrance of" Him.  And 1 Corinthians 11:26 which says that we are to keep the memorial until the Lord comes (returns).

Now, the thing is that I always remember them saying that Christ's invisible return happened in 1914.  So, if he is here with us now, then why do we have to keep the memorial "in remembrance" of him?  That would be kind of like the family of someone who Jesus resurrected having a funeral service to "remember" the person by.  Why do you have to "remember" someone who is here with you?  It doesn't add up for me.

Now as to the Corinthians verse, Paul says to keep the memorial until Christ returns, so if he's already returned, why keep the memorial?  Paul's words indicate that once Christ returns, there will be no more need for the service.  So if he returned in 1914, why do we still have to have the service?

Now, don't get me wrong, I am all for continuing to memorialize his death.  What Jesus did for us by making atonement for our sins is what our whole faith and hopes are based upon.  Without his sacrifice, we could never have been made right in the eyes of God and we would be under the same condemnation and penalties for sin that the Mosaic Law sets forth.  We are no longer bound by the law but are free because of God's grace that he displayed by allowing His son to be sacrificed on our behalf.

At the church I work for,  they hold a memorial of his death too, although they call it "Communion".  Since the Bible doesn't really tell us how often we are supposed to hold this memorial, just that we must do so, they have it once a month, on the first Sunday of the month.  Every Protestant church I've ever attended does it like that.  The Catholic church has it every week at their mass.  All of these churches obviously also know the scripture in Corinthians that shows that we are to continue doing it until Christ returns.

So I guess my question is not really should we be doing it anymore, because, clearly, everyone is in agreement that it is appropriate to continue doing it right through the present.  So, I guess the question is why would God continue to allow us all to do it if Christ is returned?  Because, according to these two verses, it is to cease upon his return.  This would mean that, by allowing it to continue, God is contradicting His own words in the Bible.

My biggest problem has always been that I am such a questioner--I analyze things right down to the core.  When I was a child, attending the KH with my parents, the elders never cared much for that, I must admit.  They always acted as though I should just accept what they said even though it never really answered my questions.  I even found that the WT often would go around and around in circles to answer a question and at the end, it  seemed that the question still wasn't really answered.  Maybe it's just me, but I want to be like the Boreans who were commended in Scripture because they "searched the scriptures daily to see whether these things were so", and I don't think I should be condemned for something that was actually commended by God in His own word.  Yet, that is exactly what happened at the Kingdom Hall; questioning was not looked upon with favor at any level.

Here's another thought regarding Christ's invisible return in 1914:  Why does Revelation 1:7 say that when He returns "every eye shall see him" if his return was supposed to be invisible and to have already taken place?

For Jehovah's Witnesses who are sincerely seeking truth, these questions are well worth asking yourselves . . .

"A Worldwide Message" from the JWs

Part 2--refuting “The End of False Religion is Near”,

I am back and ready to dissect the next part of “The End of False Religion is Near”, put out by the Watchtower Society this past fall. The next section targets “false religion” in three areas, claiming that it “meddles in war and politics”, “spreads false doctrine”, and “tolerates immoral sex”. Let’s examine the first of these claims and see what the referenced scriptures really say.

meddles in war and politics – This section pieces together snippets of quotes from sources with no specific references provided for verification purposes. Furthermore, since the Watchtower Society takes God’s word intentionally out of context in order to try to substantiate their points, we know they must not be above doing the same with secular sources. Without being able to check these sources, I do not put stock in any supposed quotes the Watchtower uses. It has been proven time and again that they misquote sources. And, frankly, taken out of context, anyone can make anything say whatever they want it to—especially when “circular reasoning” is applied. * (see below).

One source, they claim, says that “power hungry leaders are cynically manipulating people’s religious sentiments for their own needs”. First of all, what does that have to do with the main title, “False Religion”? The accusation is against political leaders, not against religion itself or its leaders. It says they (political leaders) are manipulating people’s “religious sentiments”, NOT that they are manipulating world religions—this is an important distinction because, later on in the flier, they try to make a case that all politicians and all religions (other than the JWs of course) are bedfellows. They even misapply Revelation chapter 17 to make their point. (But more on that later).

Next, they quote “a prominent religious leader” as saying that we need to kill the terrorists before the killing will stop. Well, I think that’s pretty much been the sentiment of the entire country since 911. After 911, it became obvious to everyone that a passive approach with these terrorists was no longer effective. Perhaps some people feel it is inappropriate for a “religious leader” to make such statements, but we are all only human after all and 911 was such a horrific tragedy that many of us said things that were spoken in a highly emotional state. Regardless, this religious leader they say they are quoting remains nameless in the flier—another reference we are unable to substantiate.

Now, I ask you this: What do the scriptures they quote herein have to do with WAR??? The references they quote speak about loving your brother and not hating your enemies. It’s not as though most of us hate the Arab race because of the acts of some Arab terrorists. However, we DO hate the terrorist acts that have caused the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Furthermore, after 911, we all realized that the terrorists were going to have to be stopped or else they would continue to threaten us on our own soil with even more terrorist acts. I personally do not see a contradiction between these sentiments and the scriptural admonitions to love our brothers and pray for our enemies.

The Watchtower, as usual, compares apples and oranges, in this instance, to prove the point they are trying to make—that religion is behind all of the world’s problems and that religious leaders are promoting the war effort. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Incidentally, in the Old Testament, God Himself repeatedly allowed the nation of Israel to defend itself from pagan attackers around them. They were even allowed to exact revenge on other nations who had attacked them at a previous time. God’s blessing was always on the leaders of the Hebrew armies so long as they went to war at a time when they were in good standing with God. They were allowed to exact “an eye for an eye” and a “tooth for a tooth” from the enemies that smote them.

The paragraph dealing with war and politics sums up with a question to the reader: “How many religions can you think of whose members engage in war?” Of course, our soldiers come from every denomination—except one: Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Watchtower Society does not allow its people to participate in politics of any type. They, supposedly, maintain a firm “neutral” stand on such issues. Not entirely true, however, they would like us to believe that. Once again, the circular reasoning technique brings us back to the WTS. They are saying, in essence, “This makes US the only true religion, since we are the only ones not participating in the war effort.” Once again, apples and oranges. The fact that they re-wrote the Bible, believe an entirely different Gospel than the one Christ preached, and think Christ was only “a widely respected religious figure”, has nothing to do with whether or not they are the “only true religion”, I guess. Go figure.

When I return, we will dissect the next paragraph that claims that false religion “Spreads False Doctrine”

*Circular reasoning is just like playing the child’s game of “telephone”—by the time what is said is passed down the line through a series of slight alterations, it no longer resembles what it was at the start. The Watchtower is famous for this technique! Every change is so subtle, that, if you are not paying strict attention or do not know what to look for, you won’t be able to see what is happening. No wonder the average JW at the door can easily twist most people into theological knots in 2.8 seconds! They are vigorously taught this technique. Attempting to refute doctrine with them is definitely not for those who are faint of heart.

Part 3-refuting "The End-of-False-Religion" flier

SPREADS FALSE DOCTRINE--under this next heading, the WTS claims that "many of these religions exploit their members, charging money to pray for departed souls". And so begins their attempt to refute the Bible doctrine of a spirit after-life--by stating something from history, rather than from Bible doctrine.

First of all, the author of this paragraph needs to learn a little bit of church history. To wit, the sale of, what was called "indulgences" only occurred in the Catholic Church--not in all (or even "many") Christian religions. This practice, which was affirmed by the Catholic church in 1343, was the chief concern of Martin Luther and the chief cause of the Protestant Reformation. In 1517, Luther published his 95 Theses that criticised the Catholic Church on many issues, including its practice of selling indulgences. As a result of Luther and other Protestant reformers, the church became divided. The Protestants left the church and became "Protestant" (because they "protested" these practices). The practice of indulgences was NEVER practiced within the denominations that broke away from the mother church. Furthermore, it has fallen out of practice in the Catholic church of today, as well.

Now let's examine the claim that the Bible "teaches a different doctrine" than that of life after death. Let's look at the scriptures the JW flier uses to state their case. Let's look first at Ezekiel 18:4, in context. Let's back up to the beginning of the passage and start in verse 1. The heading of this passage, in my Scofield Reference King James Version summarizes this passage as "God's justice defended: personal judgement for personal sin". The passage is about personal accountability, to wit, the Israelites were complaining that the sons were made to pay for the sins of thier fathers. God says He will not give them occassion any longer to make that accusation--from now on, each person would be personally accountable for his own actions. In verse 4 he says, "Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die." God is basically saying that it is His right to judge as He sees fit. And, we know from the rest of scripture, that His penalty for sin is death. The whole point of Christ coming to earth to die in our stead is to save us from having to pay that penalty ourselves, since we are sinful creatures by nature (Compare Romans 6:21-23). This passage is NOT saying that when we die, we are dead forever. The subject of this passage has nothing to do whatsoever with any life-after-death doctrine, either pro or con. It is simply stating that God's penalty for sin is death. Even if the point was unclear in this passage, it would be evident from the whole of scripture and from the general context of the passage.

The next passage the flier quotes is Ecclesiates 9:5. This verse is a favorite staple in the JW arsenal when the subject of life after death is on the table. Let's examine what the verse really says. Frist, let me say that, while evangelical scholars may interpret this verse differently, one thing they do all agree on is that it does NOT teach the absence of a conscious existance after death. Now let's look at the reason that the book of Ecclesiates was written: King Solomon, son of David, authored the book and it reflects his experiences. Two views are contrasted in the book: God's view and fallen man's view. Solomon begins this work by stating that everything in the life of man is vanity (Eccl. 1:2)--it is only emptyness without God in it. The tone of the book, at its outset, is one of sadness, one of a man looking back upon his life with a bit of regret. By the latter half of the book, once God's view is expressed, the tone becomes one of victory. Beneath this pretext, we examine the verse in question, which falls in the first half of the book, the half that describes man's earthly perspective, without the benefit of divine revelation.

In verse 5, Solomon says that the dead know nothing, and verse 6 adds that "they have no more forever any share in all that is done under the sun" (Revised Standard Version). Now, even the JWs believe in a future resurrection to this earth ("under the sun"). See how, taken in context, it tells a different story?

In addition, verse 2 voices the thought that "one fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil". Taken alone, it would seem that this verse is at variance with the whole of scripture. We know that the rest of scripture clearly denotes separate fates for the righteous and the unrighteous. Therefore, it is plain to see that the entire passage reflects the view of dejected mankind with a faithless point of view. This verse does NOT teach God's truth, but imperfect man's viewpoint, apart from God. Since this is the case, it cannot be used to support the JW doctrine of no conscious existance post-death.

For the JW to say that "knowing nothing" after death, means man is unconscious after death then, to be consistant, they would also have to say that the phrase "neither have they anymore reward" means there will be no resurrection or future reward post-death (something the JW do believe!) If the Bible is anything, it is consistant. We cannot take a verse or part of it to mean one thing while taking the whole of scripture to mean the direct opposite. The Bible is consistent throughout because it's divine author is consistant. God is"the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

Now, let's examine the last passage spoken of in this section of the flier: John 11: 11-25. The WT says that "Jesus taught that the dead will be resurrected--an unnecessary action if humans had an immortal soul." John 11: 11-25 is the account of Jesus raising his freind, Lazarus back to life. He tells his disciples in verse 11, that Lazarus is sleeping , "but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep." The disciples misunderstand Jesus' words and think Jesus is speaking of literal sleep, when he is actually using it as a metaphor to explain how easily he will be able to raise Lazarus--as easily as waking someone from sleep. Upon entering the house, Jesus has a conversation with Lazarus' sister, Martha, who tells him that she knows Lazarus "shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day" (v. 24)--she has no idea that Jesus is going to resurrect him back in their immediate presence. She is thinking of a future hope, one that OT believers had faith in, and which was revealed by OT prophets (Isa. 26:19; Dan. 12: 2, 13; Hosea 13:14). In fact, there were occassions in the OT when the dead were resurrected to earthly life through a miracle of God as displayed by his prophets (i.e. 1 Kings 17: 17-24).

These earthly resurrections only forshadowed what God would do on a grander scale, not only through the miracles of Jesus and the apostles, but through Christ's own resurrection. However, until Christ was raised from the dead and ascended into heaven, faithful believers were unable to cross the divide into the heavenlies. Christ was the "firstborn" from among the dead (Col. 1:18; Rev. 1:5; 1 Cor. 15:20). His resurrection opened the passage for believers to follow him into heaven; since his death and resurrection, he possesses the "keys of hell and of death" (Rev. 1:18).

Faithful OT believers who had died prior to Christ's death and resurrection, and were thus unable to cross the divide into the heavenlies, still await resurrection to receive their reward (See Hebrews 11: 39, 40), just as unrighteous dead await resurrection to receive their judgement. Therefore, a resurrection IS still necessary, even though we have an immortal soul, according to the Bible. Furthermore, scripture shows that resurrection will be necessary in a bodily sense, although our spirit does not die. Resurrection bodies will be incorruptible, glorious, powerful, and spiritual (1 Cor. 15: 42-44, 49).

More importantly, NOWHERE in the Bible does it teach that the spirit dies with the body. Who is it, therefore, that is spreading a "false doctrine" regarding life after death? The WTS, or believers who believe what God says in His word and take what He says in the context with the whole of scripture?

Tomorrow, I address the heading that accused religion of tolerating "immoral sex". Stay tuned.

Part 4-Refuting “The End of False Religion” flier

Greetings, "Soundness of Mind" readers. Hope you are having a blessed day! Now, on to the next section of the WT’s fall flier. . .

Tolerates Immoral Sex
This topic begins with accusing "church groups" of ordaining gay and lesbian members of the clergy and says that they urge "governments to recognize same-sex marriages." Now, I don’t condemn anyone for how they choose, or don’t choose, to live their lives. I won’t shove my views about a person’s lifestyle down their throat, and I expect the same courtesy. My basic feeling is that it is God’s place, AND HIS ALONE, to judge. He sees the hearts of people, whereas I cannot. Jesus dined with sinners and outcasts, much to the chagrin of everyone around him, reaching out IN LOVE and forgiveness to those who were lost. Never once does scripture tell us that he condemned or berated even the worst of sinners. In fact, if he condemned anyone, it was the haughty Scribes and Pharisees who looked down their self-righteous noses at every one else. I wouldn’t like Him to condemn me for the same reason.

It may be true that there are some church groups who are very liberal about it’s members, and even its clergy’s, lifestyles. On the other end of the spectrum, are the ultra-conservative, evangelical born-again Christians. Whichever way you may lean on "personal choice" issues, is none of my concern. I, myself, am neither an extreme liberal nor an ultra-conservative, but probably somewhere in the middle, doing the best I can and being careful not to pass judgement on people. I do not have the right to play God in another human-being’s life—that is between him and God. Just my opinion.

Having said that, my contention with the Watchtower Society’s flier is that they seem to be intimating that ALL church groups in western lands stand by these practices, and that is just a LIE. Just the WTS, once again, attempting to make themselves look better than everyone else so that they can claim to be the only "true religion." The fact is that the vast majority of Christian churches do NOT approve such practices. How many times have you seen it on the news that this or that prominent, evangelical leader is speaking out against things they consider sexually immoral, whether it be same-sex marriages, abortion, or whatever. They are so publicly outspoken about these matters, in fact, that I can’t even believe the WTS would expect anyone to believe the opposite to be the case. Just another chink in the WT propaganda machine.

Worse, the flier goes on to say that, "even churches that condemn immorality have tolerated religious leaders who have sexually abused children." I can’t believe they are even saying this, when there are countless stories of the WTS not only tolerating this very thing in their midst, but covering up for the perpetrator! They have even gone so far as to accuse the victim of bringing it on themselves, both in cases of child sexual abuse and rape. Worse, they have told the victims that they will be dealt with before the judicial committee if they continue to make such slanderous statements about the perpetrator. This, even in cases where the perpetrator has been accused more than once by different victims. Search around the web, if you don’t believe this to be the case. I have read countless stories like this and have watched videos, including an interview by Connie Chung with two JW young ladies who had been victimized by the same rapist. So when, the paragraph ends these accusations with: "Do you know of religions that condone immoral sex?" I want to stand up and scream, "YES, Watch Tower Society! YOU DO!"

Part 5: refuting…

This section: "How Will False Religion End?"

The basis for the argument set forth in this section is Revelation chapter 17. The WTS attempts to interpret the "harlot" spoken of in this chapter as the sum total of all world religions. Once again, they set the reader up for their premise that they are the only true religion and, thus, the only safe haven during the impending battle of Armageddon. But is their identification of this symbolic figure accurate?
While there are slight variations, even among reputable commentators, as to the identity of the "harlot", one thing is for certain: she is NOT Christendom. The term "Christendom" is used to describe the collective Christian world and JWs use it in this instance to, once again, make themselves stand out as separate and above the rest.

I don’t want to get into a long discourse or debate about the identity of the "harlot" here, but I will tell you why I know it is NOT Christendom. It is very simple, really: Revelation chapters 17-19 give a description of the harlot revealing her to be the capital of the anti-Christ’s Satanically empowered city. Whether you subscribe to the ideas presented by commentators who believe this is a literal city, or those who believe it represents the apostate conglomerate, the scriptures are very clear on the reasons she is the object of God’s wrath. Her are a few of them:

Rev. 17: 3 –she joins herself to the beast who is full of blasphemous names
Rev. 17: 6 –She is "drunk" with the blood of the saints and martyrs of Jesus Christ, whos salughter she has sponsored
Rev 18: 23—She deceives the nations with her "sorceries" (Greek: pharmakeia—the ancient art of casting magic spells).
Rev. 18: 2—She is described as a "dwelling place of demons" and "every unclean spirit"
Rev. 18: 7—She is compared to the ancient city of Babylon, because of her haughty, prideful attitude, due to her position as queen of the earth.
Rev. 19: 2—She corrupts the earth by means of her "fornication"—her sinful relationship with the political rulers of the earth—leading the world to worship and support the "beast" (the devil and the anti-Christ)
Rev. 17: 18; 18: 16—the scriptures definitively refer to her as "that great CITY"
Rev. 18: 11-13—Destruction of the city means loss of commercial activity and wealth for the merchants who had dealings with her.
Rev. 18: 20—The apostles, prophets, and saints rejoice at her destruction as God exacts retribution for her mistreatment and mass slaughter of them.

Now, I ask you, as a thinking person: Does this description sound like it is describing the Christian world (certainly not!), or an entity that hates God and blasphemes against Him? Once again, by taking the verses in context, the WT stance is blown out of the water.
The flier states: "God will call false religion to account for all the despicable acts she has committed in His name". I ask you, where is the proof that Christendom has committed despicable acts of the nature described in Revelation?

Now after repetitiously referring to the harlot as "false religion" throughout this section, the WT asks, "Where can you flee", while obeying God’s command in Rev. 18:4 to "get out of her"? They say, "not to Atheism, since its future is also bleak", and they reference 2 Thessalonians 1: 6-9. But that verse describes the WTS as well as anyone, because it speaks of those who "do not know God" and "do not obey the Gospel". If there is anyone that does not KNOW God or obey the Gospel, it is the WTS and its followers, who reject the doctrinal basics about the person of Jesus Christ. It is the WTS and its followers, who pervert His Gospel by changing it as they see fit, in order to coordinate it with their own false doctrines!

Part 6: Refuting…..

Under the heading: "How to identify true religion"

The three main points the WT presents beneath this heading are:

"Practices love"—They claim to have "love among themselves" and "are willing to die for one another". If you believe this, just ask any person who has been shunned by his/her own family because they have left the WTS or have never become part of it. JW families would rather pay homage to the Watch Tower than to show love to their own family members who are either considered too "worldly" to be worthy of association, who have committed a "sin" the elders deem worthy of disfellowshipping, or whom have become "apostate" for voicing dissenting opinions. Ask the families of ex-JWs who have committed suicide because their self-esteem has been dashed by the WT, or because they were shunned by the only "friends" they had when they left the JWs. Ask the rape victims and victims of child sexual abuse who were twice victimized: once by their molester, and again by the elders who blamed and threatened the victim for speaking out. Ask the parents who have had to watch a child die, rather than disobey the WTS’s doctrine regarding no blood transfusions. I could go on and on with this, but I think this will suffice for now.

"Trusts God’s word"—They say that "true religion bases its doctrine on God’s word, the Bible." AMEN! First thing they got right in this flier! Then, why don’t they follow it? I think enough has been said already to prove that they don’t practice what they preach when it comes to this point.

"Strengthens families and upholds high moral standards"—Please see notes under point number one. I think that will be more than sufficient.
The grand finale—this is what the entire flier was leading up to from the first letter: "Does any religion meet these standards?" They ask, before setting off the bells and whistles, declaring the JWs as the answer to this query. I think the record has shown sufficiently that, in the WTS, the actions do not fit the words.

Now, I am certainly not saying that the JWs themselves are bad people. I think that most of them are well-meaning. They have simply been duped by the leaders of the Watchtower Society, who will surely have to answer to God for their misdirection and outright lies. The newer JWs just coming into the organization have no idea about the false prophecies, the occult roots, and the origins of the perverted doctrines they are being taught. The JWs I know got into the mess they are in for one of two reasons: either out of loneliness and a need to belong to a group where they felt cared about, or an honest thirst for the word of God. How convenient that a seemingly well-meaning person offered to come to into their own home and show them "the truth" that is supposedly hidden from everyone else in the world. People who don’t know their Bible, or don’t know it very well, are very susceptible to a well-groomed, pleasant-speaking person who presents his or herself as an authority on the subject.
So, when you see a JW coming to your door, please do not be hostile. He/she is probably a well-meaning person who truly believes what he/she is saying. He/she thinks they can show you the road to salvation, while at the same time, working toward their own salvation. They are truly misguided and need to be shown that salvation is a free gift of God through Jesus Christ. We cannot earn it because we can never be righteous enough, on our own merit, to do so. That was the whole purpose of Christ’s atoning work on the cross.

For those of you who are firmly rooted in Christian doctrine, I encourage you to reach out to the JW at your door in a spirit of Christian love. If you are not, please tread very carefully. A polite, "I’m not interested" will suffice. Then, politely close your door, go inside, and pray that the Holy Spirit will lead such lost souls into the real truth of God’s word. In the end, it is only God that can call a person out of the darkness and into the light. If we are capable, we plant the seed. Then, we let God Almighty do the rest.
Have a blessed weekend. Candy

PBS Documentary on Jehovah's Witnesses

BS Documentary on Jehovah's Witnesses

Ok, so I watched the JW Documentary the other night on PBS and I have a couple of things to say. I know that there was a lot of hype with people not wanting it to be shown, so I just HAD to see what all the hoopla was about.

I have to say, at the outset, that I don't see what was so bad about it. It wasn't really pro or con. Obviously, the film maker is sympathetic to their cause, as one might expect, since his mother is an active JW. But I think it was simply meant to humanize the average JW, but not necessarily to promote the religion, per se.

Last week, there was a petition circulating through the e-mail regarding the Holocaust Memorial in Germany. Some people wanted to see the exhibit taken down that memorializes the JWs who were murdered in the death camps. Now that I have seen the documentary, I understand the purpose of the exhibit, and I have to say that I do NOT agree with those who wish to see it taken down. Here's why:

While there seems to be some evidence that those in the hierarchy of the WTS may have supported Hitler's rise to power, I don't see what that has to do with the rank and file JW, who was murdered because they would not renounce their faith (however misguided some of us may feel their faith to be). They are still martyrs, and I don't see anything wrong with telling that piece of history, or memorializing any of the individuals who were persecuted and murdered in such atrocities as the Holocaust.

The fact of the matter is that the Rothschild dynasty, who also formed the Zionist movement, were also instrumental in seeing Hitler rise to power, thereby sacrificing other Jews to the Hitler machine. I don't think that, because of this, the murdered Jews shouldn't be remembered any more than the murdered JW shouldn't. If one group of people is memorialized, then all of the groups should be memorialized, as they all ultimately succumbed the same fate.

Many people don't even realize that more than Jews were murdered in the Holocaust--this is a piece of history that has been lost to many people. The fact of the matter is that ANYONE who did not subscribe to Hitler's ideology hook, line, and sinker, were persecuted in the death camps. Even his own generals, who he became paranoid and suspicious of, were murdered at Hitler's orders in the "Night of the Long Knives".

To say that the JWs should not be memorialized for dying for their cause would be like saying that any Arab-American person who died in the WTC attack on 9/11 should not be memorialized in the 9/11 Memorial, because the government says that it was Arab "terrorists" who planned the attack. Such an idea is ridiculous, not to mention entirely prejudiced.

I also think that, too often, the rank and file JW takes the backlash for what the WTS does, and unfairly so. These are people who truly believe that they are pleasing God because they are told by the unscrupulous WTS that they need to follow the WT rules in order to be pleasing to God. Just because they are being misguided does not mean that they are not doing what they feel is the right thing to do.

This is why, although I despise the WTS, for preventing its people from having a personal relationship with Christ and benefiting from salvation by Grace, I have a heart for the rank and file JW, who makes endless sacrifice of his/her money and time to serve the WT machine, convinced that they are "working out" their own salvation by doing so and hoping to save you and I in the process.

One thing I got a chuckle about, when watching the documentary: When the young man, Seth, was in his room playing his guitar, the stack of CDs in his room was topped off with a Van Halen CD. I couldn't help but wonder if the elders won't be giving him a talking to now, about that "worldly" music. lol

Jokes aside, though, I found the whole storyline about his disease and bloodless surgery to be very disturbing. I was getting angry at the WT for putting that family through that whole sordid affair, worried that no hospital would take on the case or sacrifice a liver to a surgery that had a high probability of failure. It was upsetting to see that his own father also had to go through a bloodless surgery, that also had a high probability of failure, because he ended up being the only way he could get the transplant. So, now, the family had to worry about losing two members, rather than one. I am just happy that they both survived the ordeal.

I can't help but think that maybe God, yet, has a plan for their lives. As long as someone still has breath, there is still an opportunity to rescue them from the clutches of the WT and to introduce them to the true Christ that the Bible teaches.

Faith Abiding v. Law Abiding

No Alternative?: Jehovah's Witness refuses optional military service
Faith-abiding vs law-abiding…

By court decision Vanadzor resident Davit Petrosyan will spend the
next two and half years in prison for avoiding alternative military
service.

The Vanadzor (Lori province) court of general authority recognized
18-year-old Jehovah's Witness Petrosyan guilty based on part 1 article
327 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia (for avoiding
military service).

The Law on Alternative Service is in effect since 2004 which provides
conditions for alternative service for members of religious
organizations. Article 2 of the law stipulates, "Alternative service
