Mark Calaway was born on March 24, 1965.  Twenty three years later after he was born, he started his wrestling career.  From 1984 to 1988 Mark Calaway, the World Wrestling Entertainment's Undertaker, wrestled as "Commando" for Central Illinois Wrestling, CIW, a promotion out of Illinois.  At the time, Calaway was living in Texas. During the week he attended a private, Methodist college, Wesleyan University, in Ft Worth, where he majored in Sports Management and played basketball for the school team, the Rams. At night he worked as a bouncer in a bar.

On weekends, Calaway would drive from Houston to Chicago to work shows for $15.00 a night. He would wrestle in Chicago as well as all over the state.  As Commando, Calaway was a brawler. Once out of school he decided to get formally trained. That is when Calaway began training with the Von Eric Family.

While training Calaway met another wrestler that went by the name of Percy Pringle. Percy (Paul Bearer) took an immediate interest in the young and talented wrestler - even to the extent of getting the Von Eric's to give Calaway a chance within their federation. So Calaway began wrestling for The Von Erik's and was managed by Skandor Akbar.  Since the days of the Punisher and other cooky gimmicks, Mark Calloway has been looked upon as a gifted young piece of talent. Mark, trying to break in as a big time superstar, hit the big times, so we all once thought, when he entered WCW as Mean Mark Callous.

After days and days of winning in dark matches against nobodies, he finally proved that he was good enough and tough enough to go big time.  He was working for WCW at the time. It is said that Mark approached WCW with the idea of the Undertaker character. WCW shot it down. WCW didn't believe the angle would work and wouldn't give Mark the chance to try it out. Shortly thereafter, Calaway left WCW and signed with the World Wrestling Entertainment. Vince McMachon was open to the Undertaker character and allowed Mark to run with it. The Undertaker has been a strong, viable character ever since. In fact, it is one of the longest lasting, popular gimmicks the wrestling world has ever known.

The Undertaker made his first appearance on November 22, 1990 at the Survivor Series.  He was a mystery opponent on the Million Dollar Man's team.  The Undertaker was brought to the World Wrestling Entertainment by the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, who gave him as a gift to a crooked by the name of Brother Love.  From there, Brother Love turned the Undertaker over to Paul Bearer.
