Former WWE and Portland Wrestling star Playboy Buddy Rose (Paul Perschmann) was found dead by his wife on Tuesday afternoon.

Rose, who was extremely heavy the last time I saw him in 2005, had been dealing with diabetic issues in recent years.

Rose originally broke into the business in the old Verne Gagne AWA, having been trained by Gagne and famed shooter Billy Robinson. He went on to become a true star heel for Don Owens' Portland Wrestling.

In his 2002 autobiography, Roddy Piper credited Rose for helping put him on the map in the Portland area, providing him a forum to hone his interview skills and become a true main eventer. Piper noted in the book that Rose invited him to come work the territory. Piper initially turned him down as he had been working regularly in Los Angeles, then reconsidered and took the job, setting him off to stardom.

Rose worked for the WWE at different points in his career. He was pushed as a top heel at one point in the late 1970s, including a series of matches against then-WWE champion Bob Backlund.

Rose also wrestled on the first Wrestlemania event as the masked Executioner, losing to Tito Santana in the opening contest, becoming the answer to an immediate trivia question.

Rose's final run with WWE was as an undercard comedy heel who was out of shape, setting the stage for the infamous "Blowaway Diet" vignettes. During that run, he mostly worked comedic opening matches on house show, playing off his weight by doing jumping jacks and other exercises while on offense. The vignettes were so silly they ended up becoming memorable among fans.

Rose, who was considered a good talker and great bumper, also held the AWA World Tag Team championships with Doug Somers in 1986, defeating Scott Hall and the late Curt Hennig. They later dropped the belts to the then-Midnight Rockers, Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty.

What is believed to be Rose's last match took place at the first WrestleReunion convention event in Tampa, Florida in January 2005. Rose, long-time close friend Col. DeBeers (Ed Wiskoski) and Bob Orton lost to Jimmy Valiant, Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka in what was billed as Valiant's retirement match.

In recent years, Rose maintained an official website at www.playboybuddyrose.com. The website had noted that Rose was working on a book, although how far into the writing process he was I can't confirm at this time.

On behalf of everyone associated with the site, we'd like to express our deepest sympathies to Buddy Rose's family and friends.

Update on The Condition of "Killer" Kowalski
Date Added: August 10, 2008
Story By: Steve Carrier

In an effort to minimize inaccurate reports about Walter "Killer" Kowalski, his wife has asked us to send a brief update:

Initial reports by Georgiann Makropolous were correct in that Walter did, in fact, have a heart attack late on Friday. At the time, he was revived, placed on life-support and transferred from the nursing facility to an area hospital. Friday night and Saturday were critical for Walter. As of Saturday evening, Walter was more responsive to those around him, including some visitors from the wrestling industry. He is still being assisted by medical equipment but certain vital signs have improved slightly. The medical staff is hoping that he will continue to stabilize.

Walter is still in serious condition and we can all only hope for continued improvement. His wife believes that his slight improvement is due to the thoughts and prayers that he has been receiving from around the world. She asks that everyone continue to pray for Walter.

As always, messages can be sent to Walter through his school: www.killerkowalskis.com or through the mailing address on the site.

Again, we ask that everyone think of Walter during this difficult time and resist the spread of inaccurate information and reports.

Thank you,

Penny Banner Passes Away

Reporter: Mark
5/13/2008

The following was sent out today by the Cauliflower Alley Club.

The CAC has received word that Penny Banner passed away last night, peacefully in her sleep, at her daughter's home in North Carolina.

Penny was one of the most decorated women in the history of professional wrestling. Her accolades have included being the first recipient of the CAC's Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award, being inducted into the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in New York and she will be the first woman inducted to the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Waterloo in 2008.

Penny served on the Board of Directors of the Cauliflower Alley Club for many years and worked tirelessly to ensure that all remembered the women of our sport.

Penny will always have a special place in my heart. We shared some wonderful emails and wonderful times in Las Vegas. My thoughts and prayers go out to Wendi and the Banner family.

  • The Fabulous Moolah Passes Away - Details
    Reporter: RyanClark 11/3/2007
A legend in the history of WWE's women's division Fabulous Moolah has passed away at the age of 74.
Many fans will remember the Hall Of Famer for her humorous appearances with Mae Young but she was there from day one.
Moolah's career was recognized in the 2004 documentary "Lipstick and Dynamite", which looked at the pioneering days of women's professional wrestling, featuring Moolah, Mae Young and Penny Banner, among others. And she released an autobiography via WWE in 2004.
Moolah had recently undergone an eye transplant and was scheduled to have her shoulder replaced.
"In the world of womens wrestling, there will always be one irrefutable legend that stands head and shoulders above the rest: The Fabulous Moolah. She was the longest reigning champion in the history of her chosen sport, or any sport for that matter. And with more than 50 years in the business to her credit, she established a legacy that will never be forgotten, making her name synonymous with female wrestling."

    Tragic Pictures http://homepage.mac.com/knarley/owenhart/owen.html

The Owen Hart Tragedy: By far the most tragic story in the history of wrestling. It's been covered a million times on a million websites, but the bottom line is that someone screwed up. Owen Hart was looking forward to years of blissful retirement with his wife and children in a freshly built house in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Literally weeks before Owen's family was scheduled to move into their new house, Owen was asked to perform a stunt on a live pay per view which went horribly wrong. He was to be lowered from the ceiling in superhero fashion, something he had done several times before. Owen was a reluctant participant in the stunt, but went along with it because he had nixed a few other ideas beforehand and feared his job would be in jeopardy. During a pre-taped interview by the "Blue Blazer", Owen was preparing to be lowered when the equipment he was using malfunctioned and he was sent falling 40 feet to the floor, landing head first on the corner of the ring and flopping horrifically into the center of the ring. The pay per view audience was then informed that something had gone horribly wrong and it wasn't a part of the show. For what seemed like a lifetime, paramedics worked on Owen's body, but it was useless as he was soon declared deceased. Later in the pay per view, which continued with a sub-par performance rate, Jim Ross made the following shocking statement "Ladies & gentleman, uh, earlier tonight, here at Kansas City, uh, tragedy befell the World Westling Federation, and all of us, Owen Hart was set to make an entrance from the ceiling, and he fell from the ceiling, and I have the unfortunate responsibility to let everybody know that Owen Hart has died, Owen Hart has tragically died from that accident here tonight".
