The World of Snails

The Variety of Snails in the World

This is the page where i provide pictures and descriptions of snail species from around the world. I will try to pick some interesting ones from the tens of thousands of terrestrial species that exist.

Snails from around the world as pets:

Not every species of snail thrives in captivity. Many do, because of their tenacious nature, but it is important when keeping snails to try and re-create their natural environment as much as possible. Snails are relatively new as a pet, so much of snail care is 'trial and error'. I would recommend that: species smaller than 20mm should not be kept as pets, because their diet may be difficult to re-create, also, they might be difficult to find and have really tiny babies. Species native to harsh or very specific environments like mountains, deserts, swamps should not be kept. Species that don't eat fruits/vegetables/plants should not be kept. But larger species usually eat a wide array of vegetables, fruits and plants. Species which live in humid or temperate environments are usually good pets. I keep 3 species from eastern Brazil (Megalobulimus elisae, Thaumastus baixoguanduensis, Thaumastus achilles) luckily these species are quite easy to keep, but that is not always the case.
