What's going on in the prison system

Connecticut: ( November 2009 )Gov. Jodi Rell ordered corrections officials to consider shutting down one of the state's prisons to save money.   In the last 18 month the states' prison population has dropped by some 1,400 inmates. The Governor wants corrections officials to recommend which facility to close.

There is talk that they may close Garner Correctional in Newtown but there is also the chance they may just close sections of several prisons rather than close one entire facility.

Garner is the state's main facility for inmates diagnosed with significant mental health problems.  It is located on the grounds of the former Fairfield Hills Hospital.

With Fairfield Hills now closed, and the posible closing of Garner Correctional, what does this mean for inmates with mental health problems and what does it mean for the general public?

Tuesday November 10, 2008 :  D.C. Sniper Executed.  John Allen Muhammad the mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks that killed 10 in the Washington region was executed by lethal injection.

I fully understand that this is what society feels is a justified punishment for the crime(s) John Allen Muhammad did, but do we really have the right to take a person's life?

Then there is the question...if not execution THEN WHAT?  To incarcerate an inmate for life with out the possibility of parole means that for the rest of this inmates' life the people ( us tax payers) will have to fork the bill.  Inmates need to be fed and have medical attention when needed. These things cost money.

I myself don't have the answers . Your questions and comments are always welcome. E-mail them to me at wcmprisonoutreach@Yahoo.com

December 2009: There are many things  going on right now in the Connecticut Department of Correction. To keep yourself up to date please visit  www.ConnPost.com   or The Connecticut Department of Correction's web site  www.ct.gov/doc   Changes are taking place that involve early release of inmates who are within 45 days of the completion of their sentences.

Did You Know?...

Did you know that in most correctional facilities inmates are paid only about five dollars per week?

That's only the inmates who WORK with in the facility doing such jobs as working in the kitchen or laundry. These are 7 day a week 365 days a year. They get no days off.

Inmates in Connecticut must  pay to go to the medical unit. Two dollars is deducted from their inmate acounts per visit.  They must buy soap and other such items.  If they want a T.V. Walkman or any other such item they must buy that. These items can not be sent in to an inmate from any one on the outside.  Not only in Connecticut, but in most U.S. prisons inmates must buy any clothing items from the prison store. Socks, Underwear, and even their towel and face cloth.

I know...you're asking " So what does this have to do with me?".   Sit back because I'm about to tell you.

When this ministry was formed in 1998 I was able to send Bibles and Bible materials to inmates FOR FREE.  With times being what they are I can no longer do that. I now require that before I can meet an inmate's request that the  inmate must send five dollars to cover the cost of the postage.

SEE... five dollars. Where have you herd that dollar amount before?   Right, that's the inmate's weeks pay.  This ministry has to ask an inmate with limited funds to give up a week's pay in order to receive a Bible and /or Bible materials from us.  Friends THAT STINKS.

You can change that situation with you kind donation of just 1 dollar. That's right 1 dollar.

If enough people send just 1 dollar this ministry would have enough money to once again be able to offer these things for free.  So, here's how you do that.  Go to  www.Freewebs.com/be1inamillion
