One of the oldest Australian bred working dogs is making a comeback !!!

About Us

This hard working breed, now known as the " Koolie ", ( sometimes known as a German Koolie, Coolie, Caulie), has been hidden away in rural Australia since the mid 1800's. They have been eagerly and concientiously going about their work on the farm with little or no recognition for the difficult and demanding work they do, herding sheep, cattle goats and almost anything that will move.

The Working Koolie Association of Australia Inc (WKAA Inc) was formed in November 2002 in order to foster and preserve an understanding and admiration of the true authentic Working Koolie dog.

Our Goals

~ To promote amongst the farmers and general public, a wide interest in the Koolie dog as an active, intelligent working dog, who can turn its' ability to all forms of work from sheep, cattle or any kind of livestock on the farm, to trucks and yards, to obedience, agility and anything inbetween, all the while being a loving ,friendly member of the family.

~ To establish and maintain a true stud register, with the ultimate aim to have the Koolie breed accepted and recognised as a breed in its own right.

~ To encourage, develop and improve the standard of our Koolie dogs.

~ To hold trials in various disciplines showcasing the Koolie’s talents and temperament to the public as well as other Koolie enthusiasts.

~ To hold and enjoy social gatherings of Koolie enthusiasts in all states and participating countries

~ To support and encourage the responsible breeding of authentic Working Koolies

~To be at all times an open and honest Association with consideration toward our members and mindful of their suggestions and input.

MEMBERSHIP

Our members are a valuable part of the Association. They are openly encouraged to become involved in the direction of the Association and its ideals. The Association wants to nurture and encourage the continued use of the authentic working Koolie dog in Australia and overseas as an integral part of a livestock operation. Members include station workers and managers, dairy operators, three sheep trial and yard dog trial participants, agility and obedience competitors, saleyard workers, drovers and those working towards herding instinct testing their dog.

INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION

Currently, the Association have representatives in the USA. We extend a friendly welcome to all overseas persons wanting to join The Working Koolie Association.

BREEDERS

A breeders listing on our web page will be free of charge to all financial members who so desire it. Many of the Association listed breeders are supportive of and maintain contact with each other. They are also happy to refer a potential customer to other breeders, if they do not have available the type of dog that is needed.

Breeders are encouraged to be responsible in their breeding programs and to use known bloodlines, whenever possible. It is suggested to breed only from Koolies who show a distinct interest in herding and stock work. Breeders are strongly encouraged to select and breed only healthy dogs that are genetically sound.

It also important that breeders inform prospective buyers of the mental and physical needs of a Koolie in relation to stimulation and exercise.
