One of the ancestors of the domestic dog, the gray wolf or also known as the timber wolf. This is a powerful, muscular animal with a thick, bushy tail. Wolves vary in color from almost white in the Arctic to yellowish-brown or nearly black farther south. Intelligent social animals, wolves live in family groups or in packs that sometimes include more than one family or other individuals besides the family.
The pack members hunt together, cooperating to run down prey such as deer, caribou and wild horses, and they also eat small animals such as mice, fish and crabs. Social hierarchy in the pack is well organized and is maintained by ritualized gestures and postures; the leading male signals his rank by carrying his tail higher than the others do. Pairs remain together for life.
The female gives birth to 3 to 8 pups after a gestation of about 63 days. Born blind and hairless, the pups first venture outside the den at 3 weeks, and the whole pack helps to care for them. |
