The
following class rules are designed to facilitate learning, and therefore help
provide an environment in which all can achieve their potential.
Ø
Do
not talk out of turn.
Ø
Do
not get out of seat without permission.
Ø
Only
do math work.
Ø
Do
not throw anything.
Ø
Do
not waste class time.
The
following procedures will be followed in enforcing class rules:
1.
Daily:
(a)
Up
to a total of two warnings will be given for infractions.
(b)
The
third infraction will result in a call home.
2.
Weekly:
(a)
Six
infractions in one week will result in a detention with the teacher during
lunch or after school.
(b)
Failure
to attend a detention will result in a call home.
3.
After
three calls home, the next “call home” will be for a parent conference, with
the Dean in the Dean’s office. The student
will be pre-suspended, that is, sent to In-House Suspension, until the parent
can attend the conference.
The
following grading policy is designed to reward effort in all areas of the
course.
15% Homework
40% Quizzes
& Tests
20% Participation:
60% class participation
40%
Do Now
10% Journal
15% Projects
Notes
regarding each component of the grade:
4.
Homework:
(a)
Homework
is given almost every night, including weekends.
(b)
Homework
will be checked the following day, but will only be collected and marked
occasionally.
(c)
Homework
questions that students had trouble with will be reviewed in class, after the
Do Now.
5.
Quizzes
& Tests:
(a)
A
quiz or test will be given each week.
(b)
The
lowest grade, or possibly two lowest grades, will be dropped.
6.
Participation:
(a)
The
Do Now counts for 40%, and general class participation counts for 60%. The two combined will make up 20% of the
final grade.
(b)
Students
are expected to participate in all aspects of the class, including group work.
7.
Journal:
(a)
Journals
will be kept; entries will be made almost every day.
(b)
Journals
will be checked weekly. Students will
have the opportunity to address comments to the teacher, and receive responses
from the teacher.
8.
Projects:
(a)
There
will be a number of short and long duration projects throughout the
semester. Students will have the
opportunity to work on them in school, but are expected to work on the major
part of them outside of school.
(b)
Some
projects will be completed independently, and others will be completed as part
of a group.
PLEASE NOTE:
This is your first mathematics class at Williamsburg Preparatory High
School. Everything you learn during the
coming year will be used throughout your High School career. I hope that you have a great
experience. I look forward to our time
together.
