The lines loco collection

ACCUCRAFT RUBY No. 1 'Ruby'

This is a great loco - but isn't powerful enough to haul anything on our line. The loco is manually controlled and is usually found in the lines workshop for ongoing improvement work.

MAMOD 0-4-0T No. 2

No. 2 is a 'Mamod' 0-4-0T with IP add-ons including new wheels, a new safety valve and a much better regulator. The loco has not run in ages and is stored, but will be running later in the season.

MILLIE 0-4-0T No. 3 'JONATHAN' (currently as No. 8903)

'Jonathan' is the main small tank loco of the Railway. It was built by Roundhouse Engineering to their Millie 0-4-0T design for the Woodrow Light Railway in 2001 and is very popular. It has external firing and is not regaugeable, so the only railway it is likely to visit is the Misbourne Valley Railway. It has been fitted with a coal load and the water top up system by Roundhouse, as well as various smaller add-ons like the brake handle instead of the gas knob. It visited the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala on May 29th 2004, and returned to WLR service the next day. The loco is a VERY popular performer, and is expected to reach a 5th year as the WLR workhorse in 2005, following the highest mileages in 2001 - 2004.

The engine was repainted into black early in 2005, and now runs as No. 8903. It will be repainted again in May 2006 into GWR Green and will work throughout the season in this condition.

JONATHAN is to the left on this view. This loco is a powerul performer and, although a small tank loco, hauls most of the WLR's trains every year. She has run more miles than all of our other locos on the WLR, and actually is ahead of all 3 of our diesels put together!

FREELANCE DIESEL No. 4

This little 4-wheel diesel is used for shunting only and only comes out on galas and other important events. It is a freelance diesel based upon the basis IP chassis. It visited the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala on May 29th 2004, its first ever run away from the WLR. Following hire to the Misbourne Valley Railway starting on May 31 2004, the loco arrived back at the line for overhaul and repairs on August 6th. There are rumors of the loco working at the MVR on another hire basis later in 2004.

On hire to the MVR - No. 4 hauls 2 visiting (again from JP's collection) wagons and K1 through the track between Rutton and Rose Halt.

MERLIN MAJOR Mk. 1 No. 5 'JUDITH'

'Judith' is by far and away the oldest loco on the line, at around 21 years old. It is a Merlin Major Mk.1 0-6-0T with regaugeable, insulated wheels and a working whistle. The loco has visited (in the time of the WLR ownership) the Chess Valley Railway and Pete Newman's line. It may visit the Misbourne Valley Railway in the future. The works number tells you the age - It is No. 329 from Merlin Works, which became bankrupt ages ago. It is fully radio controlled. Unfortunately it didn't visit the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala on May 29th 2004. However, the loco was given the grand honour of hauling a memorial train for my late Grandmother on 6th August 2004, celebrating 24 years.

ROUNDHOUSE FOWLER No. 6 'WILLIAM'

'William' is the largest loco on the line, being a Roundhouse Engineering model of the 0-6-2 Tender Loco's built by John Fowler in Leeds for the Insfrail Tramway in Queensland. The Roundhouse Model is appropriately named 'Fowler'. It was built in 1998 and came to the Woodrow Light Railway following purchase by Jon from GRS in 2002. It has visited Pete Newmans line and the Chess Valley Railway, and is hoped to visit the Misbourne Valley Railway. The loco is fully radio controlled and will haul most of the stock on the WLR. It visited the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala on May 29th 2004.

FREELANCE DIESEL No. 7

No. 7 is the new diesel rebuilt by Chris. The loco is based upon a commercially available model and has a huge 12 volt battery which it carry's around in a van. It is radio controlled by a 40 mhz system. The loco offers the same amount of power as 2 of the steam locos, but is a bit bulky for operations on the smaller stock.

IP ENGINEERING JESSIE No. 8 'Coity Castle'

No. 8 is the new diesel on the railway and is built from the IP Engineering Jessie Kit. The loco is manually controlled and regaugeable. The loco is painted in green with red cranks and rods and a black chassis. It is hoped to take the loco to Pete Newmans line at an already-booked date, and then the Chess Valley Railway. It visited the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala on May 29th 2004. The name was announced on June 6. Following visits to the Misbourne Valley Railway and Pete Newmans line, the loco returned to service at the WLR on August 6th. However, the loco then departed for a longer stay (provisionally until September 19th 2004) on the Misbourne Valley, while regular hire loco No. 4 recieves attention here at Woodrow.

COITY CASTLE runs past the station building at Box End. She is one of only 4 locos to be bought new for the WLR, and is proving a popular choice for rostering.

ROUNDHOUSE LADY ANNE No. 9 'Cleeve Abbey'

This is our newest loco - it arrived on May 16 2004. It was built up from kits and we aquired it for less then the guy who made it paid for the kits - and it had only ran once! After purchase at the Mertsham Exhibition it ran on the Yn Ryhwle (or something liek that!) layout for 2 shortened running sessions. It then arrive home and ran that and the next day. The loco then suffered problems but On 29th May attended the Misbourne Valley Railway's opening gala. It is manually controlled and regaugable and everyone here is sure it will give joy and pleasure to all who operate it.

Despite being bought on May 16, CLEEVE ABBEY visited her first line beside the WLR on May 29, just 13 days after arriving. She is a regular, and, despite some faliures, is now back and running. She is seen at Rose Halt on the MVR with a mixed train of WLR stock. (Photo MVR)

NEW BUILD No. 10

No. 10 is a total new build here in the works, and is currently under construction. The loco is currently in pieces awaiting funding for a boiler. Currently the loco comprises of chassis, wheels, smokebox, gas burner and a couple of odd bits - like the burner tray.

LGB Zillertalbahn 0-6-2T No. 11

This is a steam-outline electric engine which was bought to the WLR in May 2005. It is anticipated that the engine will serve its purpose, which is to be a quick engine to run when we have 'unexpected visitors'!. The engine runs with the same radio and battery wagon as No. 7, and is therefore very, very simple to maintain, however Nos 11 and 7 will never doublehead on the WLR!

WLR gala visitors

WLR AUTUMN GALA - AUGUST 2003

The visitor for the Autumn gala was Murray Tremellens (of the Misbourne Valley Railway) Roundhouse Russell. This loco did sterling work over the gala period and was backed by an intensive service from the home fleet. FOR A DESCRIPTION OF RUSSELL SEE BELOW THE 2nd PHOTO ON THIS PAGE.

WLR SPRING GALA 2004

This gala was even more busy train wise than the 2003 gala. Again, Murray Tremellen bought his Russell, as well as 2 coaches - A1 and A2. These coaches are the 2nd and 3rd vehicles behind the engine in the below picture - the wagon behind the loco is a very short converter wagon.

RAIL 200 GALA - MAY 2004 (see Community page for the best report)

Again 'Russell' visited us, along with A1, A2 and K1. At on point Russell became the first loco to haul more than 68 axles on our line - it JUST made 70!

K1 is a new brakevan which has just entered MVR service. She visited our rail 200 gala.

Woodrow Light Railway in Bloom - August 6th 2004.

Yet again, Russell visited - it could really join the main column now! The loco is actually 7th place in the league table for mileages at the moment.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF 'RUSSELL': Russell is a product of the Roundhouse Enginering works, Doncaster. She is usually based on the Misbourne Valley Railway and does sterling work, operating all steam services when visitors aren't around. The loco is fully radio controlled.
