Welcome to Witherlins, an Arddhu Loyal site dedicated to the Old Ones,
and to all genuine seekers of the Old Path.
“What on earth possessed you to do that?”
A rhetorical question that we’re all familiar with, but one which bears closer scrutiny…
As a child I remember being admonished with these words, but as an adult I am more able to look at a much wider picture. We are all driven to fulfil our own particular destiny, yet few of us ever consider
a] What that destiny might be,
b] What force drives us.
We tend to accept whatever life throws at us, being grateful for the good times, hoping any bad times will just be temporary. Many of us can’t cope with the sad/bad things we have to deal with, and either become depressed and withdrawn, or seek solace elsewhere. We are, after all, only human…
I believe a lot of us use this very humanity as an excuse though! The secular world actively encourages this. One either is forgiven in the afterlife, or is condemned to spend eternity in the fiery pit to atone for one’s sins.
Those who follow the latter credo are condemned to an existence whereby their every action invites the scrutiny of an all-seeing God, and whereby free thought becomes in itself sinful; the idea of rebellion, a Satan-driven notion which must be stamped out at all costs.
Back to my original question - how many of us actually give a thought to what our destiny might be?have you actually given some thought to what your destiny might be? Often we prefer to trundle through life, never questioning the whys and wherefores, accepting whatever turns up, dealing with things as best we can?
And what of the forces which drive us? Obviously we have a biological imperative, a “drive to survive”. But at what cost? If things were that simple, there would be no acts of kindness, and anarchy would result, although in order to exist man must make compromises, so eventually we’d no doubt settle on a middle path and agree to co-operate in order to fulfil humankind’s need for survival. Does this sound familiar? It should. This is how man has survived and evolved as a species. This is why we still have wars that result in the slaughter of millions. Fortunately, not everyone buys into this way of thinking. Our power as individuals lies in being able to excercise free will. This is what I meant earlier when I asked you to consider both what your destiny might be, and also whether you believe you are in fact fulfilling it.
Many question the validity of States and religions that continue to oppress and to destroy anyone or anything which does not conform to their particular credo. This is their power. The witch has another, wholly different type of power: a power conferred, not by State or even by public opinion, but a power which is nonetheless ageless and incontrovertable.
If you have explored any of the many options available and found them unsatisfactory, or if you just know that they aren’t what you need/want, then you have already begun to answer part b] of my original question – “What force drives you to fulfil your destiny?” You will already have recognised that there are forces, beyond the comprehension of most of us, which act subtly by making us question so many aspects of our existence.
If you have ever seriously wondered what your destiny might be, and what forces are driving you to fulfil it, then you have already stepped, albeit tentatively, upon the Path of the Old Ways. This website contains articles concerning some aspects of the Old Ways, and I hope that all who take the time to read my Scottish pages will find something of interest.
