IntroductionThis web page is great if you need help installing Windows NT 4.0. Windows NT is very easy to use with it's Windows 95 user interface, plus Windows NT 4.0 is more advanced than DOS and Windows 3.1 so it would be a great idea to make the move to Windows NT. If you want to keep your copy of DOS and 3.1 but want to use Windows NT, then you can dual boot your computer, this will let you choose which Operating System you want to use. I hope you find this web page useful. Good luck! Running
Windows NT 4.0To run Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 on your computer, you need to meet these system requirements:
Dual
Boot optionIf you are already running Windows 3.1 or DOS, you can install Windows NT 4.0 and have a dual boot machine. By doing this you will be able to select your Operating System at the boot up process, this is good if you have programs that will only run on Windows 3.1 or DOS but you want to use Windows NT. The only down side of this is that two Operating Systems take up a lot of room, but this should not be a problem if you are installing it onto a large hard drive, if you leave DOS on your computer when you install Windows NT then your computer will be automatically dual booted. FAT
or NTFS file systemIf you are going to use the FAT file system, it can't be FAT32, this is because Windows NT 4.0 can only see the file systems Fat16 or NTFS. So if you are going to use the FAT file system, do not enable large disk support in fdisk. FAT16 partitions can't be any bigger that 4GB each. If you are going to use the NTFS file system, use the Windows NT Workstation Setup to convert the partition. The main advantage of using the file system NTFS is the security, if you use the FAT16 file system instead of the NTFS one then you will not be able to make full use of security features. How
to install Windows NT 4.0If you have partitioned and formatted your hard drive, Great you can install Windows NT 4.0. To do this you need the three floppy disks that came with your Windows NT disk, don't have them? don't worry, all you need to do is download them (free) from www.bootdisk.com (you need 3 blank high density floppy disks) or at the command prompt type: (DO NOT TYPE THE STUFF IN THE BRACKETS!)
