WIMLER distributes piglets in Bansalan, Davao del Sur

It took some time before I can share with you the good news that WIMLER finally distributed 8 piglets last November (2008).   Six households (2 families expressed their interest to take care 2 piglets) in Bansalan were the happy recipients. Ana Marie Noel, my sister read the agreement before the recipients and asked them if they have some questions about the arrangement. We also asked them if they needed some clarifications. All the recipients said that the contract is very generous. Before distributing the piglets, I asked my brother to vaccinate the piglets.

The piglets are now in good hands. We will wait for more news in a year or so.

I would like to thank Tatay Jobo for initiating this project. I really appreciate his dedication and  in spearheading the piglet dispersal project all over the Philippines.

I also would like to thank Tatay Jobo for his contribution to jumpstart the project. He donated 1 piglet (Ph 2,000) and Wimler covered the costs of other piglets.

I appreciate any support from others so we can help more households.

Piglet Dispersal Project

The approach is not  new neither complicated.  It is one of the most common ways how poor people save money for the rainy days. While other people are breaking their brain on how to earn extra income, our pig dispersal project offers a simple but sure and tested way to earn extra income just like keeping a piggy bank.Women can easily take care of them.

Thanks to Mang Jobo Guerrero Elizeswebsite. who started a silent revolution to empower people economically, some women in Bansalan are now earning extra income by simply taking care a piglet. To know more about the pig dispersal project initiatied by Mang Jobo, visit his

"One day, quite unexpectedly, Mang Jobo sent me an email message. . He asked me if I am  interested to start a piglet dispersal project in Bansalan. If  I am , he is willing to send money to buy one piglet. It did not take long for him to convince me about the benefit of the project. I am familiar about the project and it took only Mang Jobo to push me a bit to start the project in my hometown. So we agreed: "Okay Mang Jobo, let's start the project: one piglet from you and one from me!"  - Leila Rispens-Noel, president of WIMLER

WIMLER hopes that with this small project, we can start helping poor families eventually take care of themselves. The first recipient will hand one or two piglets to the next recipient and so we build a human chain of progress driven by people's own strength and . However, the poor families need support to be able to start. Your contribution is indispensable.

This is a brief introduction, the rest is the story how women rise up from poverty.

One piglet costs Ph 2,000. With this amount you can help women in Bansalan the opportunity to earn extra income after one year and so they can eventually pay the education of their own children and bring food on the table.

How it works:

The following has been adopted from Mang Jobo's approach:

I MISSION STATEMENT

The whole purpose of the Free Piglets Program is to provide means of livelihood or means of earning a living to unmployed men and women in the town of Bansalan. The project however, is not intended for the poorest of the poor because they will have a problem finding sources to buy feeds. For this group of people, WIMLER is thinking of other appropriate intervention. Our goal is to stimulate the local economy, create jobs or livelihood, that will ultimately trickle the benefits to the poor in the long term. They can also be involved in the project in some other ways. At the moment, however, we will start with those who are under-employed.

To achieve our goal, we are tapping the kind-heartedness and generosity of Bansalenos abroad and other friends wherever they are.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 II PROJECT CONCEPT

The giving of free piglets to the poor is not a new concept. For the past 40 years or so, there were many programs like this throughout the Philippines specially in the rural areas sponsored by the government and other charitable  and development organizations. The concept is very simple. The recipient takes care of his free piglet to breed and raise to maturity in about 7 months. It is then insemminated, artifically or otherwise, and become pregnant for about 4 months. It produces or delivers 6 to 16 piglets. The piglets are nursed for about 45 days (1.5 months) and ready for dispersal, sale or for fattening. The recipient is obligated to pay back to WIMLER, 2 or 3 breeder-piglets, for further dispersal to other recipients. After that, the recipient will own the original pig plus all future piglets. He cor she can continue expanding his or her  piggery and eventually hire poor people to help him.

 III OVERALL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The overall goal is really to raise the standard of living of the people in Bansalan. Bansalan is a 2nd class municipality but there is a high rate of unemployment specially among women. The best way to do this is to strengthen agriculture since Bansalan derives its main income from agriculture. The piggery project becomes part and parcel of this produtive development.  Vigorous local industry will spur other livelihoods, employment, increase purchasing power and help improve the economy.

IV RISKS

The purpose of the above exercise is to emphasize that with good management and faithful execution of the program, we can really make a big impact and improve the lives of the poor and contribute to the economy.  All we need is just 6 years of leadership, service and volunteer efforts.
------------------
There are also risks and opportunties that need to be considered. These are:

1) Casualties or deaths of pigs. We call this mortality rate. If we allow 20% casualty.
2) In realty, some pigs give 2 births in one year. We have considered only one birth per year . This can accelerate the program in short number of years. This is on the positive side.
3) Another positive input not yet considered is that, our fundraising will not stop, and that we can further accelerate the program, if more donations will come in. For as long as we continue this program, more lucky people abroad will give and those who are pleased will give some more. We never knew that we had discovered a gold mine in this piglet  dispersal project, in terms of helping poor people. The seed money is very small, but the growth of the oriject is so big and so fast.
