Biography

Andrew Murray was born 15.5.1987 to parents Judy and Will. He first played Tennis at the age of 3. He lived in Dunblane, Scotland until the age of 15 when his significant talent in tennis made it necessary for him to move Barcelona to attend a tennis academy. This proved a good decision as he won the US Open Juniors 2004. Until the age of 12, when he gave it up to concentrate on tennis, Andy played football and even had an offer to play with the Glasgow Rangers.

He reached the 3rd round of Wimbledon after impressive wins over Bastl and Stepanek. He was knocked out by former finalist Nalbandian in a close five set match.

Andy has one older brother, Jamie, who is also a tennis player.

Andy's mother, Judy, was Scottish National Coach.

Andy is coached by 34-year-old Mark Petchey who was once ranked 80 as a tennis player.

Saturday 8th October Murray out of Challenger

Murray advanced through the second round of the Belgian challenger in straight sets against Gregory Carraz but a hamstring injury aided Xavier Mallisse in his defeat of Murray in the third.

Challenger 1st round

Andy Murray is through the first round of a Belgian challenger event after a win of 6-4, 6-4 over the Swiss Ivo Heuberger. He will play his second round match against Frenchman Gregory Carraz.

Sunday 2nd October Final against Roger Federer for Murray!!!!

Andy Murray has been in his first ever final of an ATP event and he played the person who many people consider to be the best man on the circuit, Roger Federer. This is a brilliant achievement for him and should quieten anyone who still doubts his abilities to play at the highest level and to win.

Although, I did not expect him to beat Roger Federer this time, I am extremely glad that Andy finally had the chance to play him after missing out at the Davis Cup. The score was 6-3, 7-5; an impressive sore I would say for somebody in their first ATP final playing somebody like Federer. The scoreline reflects the fact the Andy can take pressure and will refuse to be intimidated by anybody.

His ranking should now be below 70. Take note, at the age of 18, Federer was ranked 64. Could we be watching the rise of the next Federer?

Murray reached this final by beating the Thai number 1, Paradorn Shrichapan yeaterday 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.

As usual, all channels including the BBC refused to show tennis even though Britains brightest tennis hope is doing amazing things on the other side of the world. Instead, there are two "Match of the Days" for football on both Saturaday and Sunday. Now Andy has reached the final, the BBC seem to have taken a slight bit of notice and the highlights of this match are scheduled to be shown at 10.55 tonight.

Hopefully, Andy will take a trip south to Malaysia, half my country (The other half being Scotland). However, perhaps this would not be good for his game as he might seriously suffer from the +40C heat in the mid afternoon as my brother, mother and I did when on holiday there this summer. On the other hand, I don't see why Thailand would be any less hot so he may as well travel down to Malaysia. (Visit Ipoh!)

Saturday 1st October  INTO THE SEMI-FINALS!!!

Andy Murray has reached the semi-finals of the Thailand Open after a win of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over US Open semi-finalists and world no. 21, Robby Ginepri!  He will be facing Thailands top player Paradon Shrichapan in the semi-final who advanced through the previous round due to Lleytton Hewitt having been injured. Should Murray win this match, he will be facing Roger Federer in the final.

In a previous round, Murray beat the Swedish fifth seed Robin Soderling which has finally taken him into the top 100 and guarantees an automatic qualification into the Australian Open. Murray has also achieved his personal goal set at the beginning of the year which was to break into the top 100 by the end of it.

Hopefully, Andy will take a trip south to Malaysia, half my country (The other half being Scotland). However, perhaps this would not be good for his game as he might seriously suffer from the +40C heat in the mid afternoon as my brother, mother and I did when on holiday there this summer. Saturday 24th September

Andy Murray and Greg Rusedski lost yesterday to Roger Federer and Allegro. For once, this match was on TV...but only until it was replaced by horse racing on BBC 1 and the SNP party conference on BBC 2. I had to wait patiently for two hours to discover the score of this close and exciting match. It is a pity that they did not win since it would have been very interesting to have seen Andy Murray play Roger Federer today; but since the Swiss have already won 3 out of the 5 matches, this match would have been pointless.

Read my match analysis-type-thing here.

Saturday 17th September

Andy's ranking has improved since his his win at the US Open and he is now on the verge of breaking into the top 100. He is ranked 111.

Andy Murray will lead a Scottish team in a Scotland v. England team tennis competition in Aberdeen in November. Greg Rusedksi is likely to lead the English side. Aberdeen is so near here so hopefull he will come down here and I'll see him!

He has hired Frank Dick to work on his fitness.

Saturday 3rd September
ANDY MURRAY OUT OF US OPEN

After a five set match yesterday against Austrailian Open finalists Arnaud Clement, Andy is out of the US Open. The Frenchman took the first two sets but Andy looked promising by taking the next two on almost exactly the same amount of games. Unfortunately, cramp set in again in the fifth set and, although receiving treatment for it, Andy lost the fifth set 6-0. This may indicate that his level of fitness is still not as high as is required or it may indicate that the huge amount of tournaments he played in, before the US Open started, have taken their toll.

Although beaten, the fact that Andy managed to take the defeater of former no. 1 Ferrero, to five sets, is impressive in itself.

Friday 2nd September  MCENROE SAYS ANDY WILL BE IN TOP 20 NEXT YEAR

Sorry for the wrong information regarding the day of Andy's second round match - it takes place today at 4pm US time rather than yesterday.

Andy Murray played against John McEnroe yesterday and beat him. McEnroe, who has won Wimbledon at least once along with the US Open, says he thinks that Andy will be in the top 20 by next year which comes as no surprise.

Wimbledon semi-finalist, Thomas Johannssen was beaten by Sebastien Grosjean in the second round. I am posting this news because I like this player and also, I saw him at Wimbledon but, stupid as I am, it did not occur to me to ask for an autograph until he had gone!!

Wednesday 31st August ANDY WINS FIRST ROUND MATCH!!!

In only the second five set match of his career and despite throwing up during the deciding set, Andy has beaten former world no. 13 Andrei Pavel 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

His opponnent Andrei Pavel was very complimentary about him and said he should be up with Rafael Nadal - the nineteen-year-old winner of this years French Open and ranked no. 2 in the world.

His second round match is scheduled for Thursday against Frenchman Arnaud Clement whose current ATP race position is 75. Should Andy win this match, he will face either Radek Stepanek (who, in the second round of Wimbledon, he beat in straight sets) or Nicolas Kiefer. Should he win this third round match, he may face world number 1 Roger Federer in the fourth round.

Tuesday 30th August

Andy Murray is at this moment playing his first round match against Andrei Pavel! He is one game up, denying Pavel any points at all and serving in the second game. Unfortunately, because of the 5 hour time difference between Scotland and the US I will not be able to update the whole match. It doesn't help that not a single match of the US Open is shown here and I have to depend on the web for the latest information. I think the match is on BBC Five Live but I'm not sure.

Saturday 27th August
ANDY MURRAY QUALIFIES FOR US OPEN

Andy has qualified for the US Open (as the youngest Briton ever to qualify for a senior Grand Slam event) which, as you can see from the banner at the top of this page, starts on August 29th. In other words, this Monday. His first round match is against 31-year-old Andrei Pavel who was ranked 20 in the ATP rankings in 2004 but has failed to progress past a 3rd round in the grand slams. Andy is now ranked 122 and will hopefully have broken into the top 100 by the end of the US Open.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to delete past news every Grand Slam. If I don't this paragraph will just keep getting longer...
Sorry for the lack of recent news - I've been busy with the Highers at school.

Friday 19th August

Andy is now ranked 145th due to his sucess at his last challenger event. He plays in another challenger in New York this week and can hopefully further improve his ranking there.

Andy Murray has advanced to the quarter-finals of the challenger event at Binghampton after beating Harsh Mankad 5-7, 7-6,6-0. He saved 5 match points. In the quarter's, Murray will play the American Alex Bogomolov.

Andy Murray is in the finals of the challenger at Binghampton, New York! He won against Brian Baker 6-2, 6-3. He will be facing Columbian Alejandro Falla. Andy has received a wild card to the Cincinnati Masters Series Event.

Andy Murray has won the challenger at Binghampton. He has beaten Taylor Dent yet again in the Cincinnati Masters for which he received a wild card. In the second round of the tournament he took 4th seed Russian Marat Safin to three sets. However, there is bad news. The US Open wild cards were announced today and this talented player, last year winner of the US Open juniour event, has not been offered one. If he wants to play in this tournament, he will have to advance successfully through the qualifiers.

Saturday 30th July 2005

Andy is through to the quater-finals at a challenger event in Canada after a win of 6-4, 7-5.

Andy Murray was beaten in the quarter-finals by Gregory Carraz (FRA). Score: 6-3 7-6 (9-7)
