| Moon Rituals |
 |
Pagans and Witches dearly love their
holidays and sometimes go to extremes to celebrate them. But what if
they need to cast a particular spell, remove, lessen, or increase some
aspect of their life, or if they need to perform a healing ritual, or
connect with their personal deity, or ask for protection, energy,
insights, or help? All these things can be aligned with the phases of
the moon. If you have a particular need, determine what phase the moon
is in and write your spell/ritual accordingly.
On this page I've included a run-down of the various moon-phases and
what they mean in your life. Keep in mind that one is not limited to
following the meanings too rigidly. For example: If you need to bring
money into your life and it's the waning moon ask that your bills be
removed or that your needs be lessened.
At the end of each explanation I've listed some correspondences that will help you write your own rituals/spells.

Full Moon energy is used for
banishing unwanted influences in your life; protection magick; and
divination. Planning, releasing, and working backwards in time are done
on the full moon as well.
It is said theat the best Full Moon magick can be conjured for seven
days: the three days prior to the Full Moon, the night of the Full Moon
itself, and three days after the Full Moon. Sometimes the results of
Full Moon magick can take aproximatel one moon cycle to take hold and
come to completion.*
The Full Moon is the time to invoke the Mother Goddess at the height of
her glory, this is when the ceremony called "Drawing Down the Moon" is
performed. During this ceremony the energy and essence of the Full Moon
is drawn into oneself, when done properly you will feel a heightened
trance state combined with a power surge that radiates through your
whole body. Traditionally this is only done within a protective circle.
The Mother is the ripeness of womanhood, the boiling pot of Badb which
is the richness of life. Her color is red, the color of blood and the
life force. The Mother is Summer, the day, lustiness, teacher, The Full
Moon.**

- Candles are blue-white-orange or green-white-red
- Incense my be bay, sandalwood, or frankincense
- Altar should have a bell, a bowl of salt,and a bowl
of water on it, as well as the usual tools.
- Have any spell work materials ready on the altar
(To perform this rite you should have a working knowledge of circle casting and power raising.)
|
 |
|
 |
Sweep circle area;
lay our circle and altar items; bathe and robe. Light incense and altar
candles. Ring bell three times and say:
The circle is about to be cast and I freely stand within
to greet my Lady and my Lord.
Take center candle, there are either three in a candelabra one before
each section of the altar) and light each candle of the circle moving
north, then east, south, and west, and say: |
 |
(N) I call upon light and earth at the north to illuminate
and strengthen the circle.
(E) I call upon light and air at the east to illuminate and
enliven the circle.
(S) I call upon light and fire at the south to illuminate
and warm the circle.
(W) I call upon light and water at the west to illuminate
and cleanse the circle.
|
 |
Take athame in hand upraised and begin circle at North. Move around the circle north to east to south to west, and say:
I draw this circle in the presence of the Goddess
and the God where they may come and bless their child, (your name).
|
 |
Lower the athame at the North, and as you walk around the circle,
envision a blue light shooting out from the point and forming the
circle boundary, and say:
This is the boundary of the circle.
Only love shall enter and leave.
|
 |
Return the water bowl to the altar and pick up censer, take it around
the circle to cense it; return censer to altar. Take anointing oil and
make a Solar Cross ringed by a circle on your forehead, and say:
I, (your name) am consecrated in the names
of the Goddess and the God, (names,
in this, their circle.
|
 |
Take the wand and hold it aloft, with both arm open and upraised at the
north or the circle (envision a powerful bull arriving) and say:
I call upon you, Elemental Earth,
to attend this rite and guard this circle,
for as I have body and strength,
we are kith and kin!
|
 |
Lower wand and move to the east, raise up wand (see devas, faeries, or an eagle in flight) and say:
I call upon you, Elemental Air,
to attend this rite and guard this circle
For as I breathe and think,
We are kith and kin.
|
 |
Lower wand and move to the south, raise up wand (see a dragon) and say:
I call upon you, Elemental Fire,
To attend this rite and guard this circle
For as I consume life to live
We are kith and kin!
|
 |
Lower wand and move to the west, hold wand aloft (see an undine, a sea serpent, or a dolphin) and say:
I call upon you, Elemental Water
To attend this rite and guard this circle
For as I feel and my heart beats
We are kith and kin!
|
 |
Return to the altar and use wand to draw in the air above the altar the
symbol of infinity (an 8 lying on its side), the sign of working
between the worlds. Set wand on altar, raise up athame in both hands
overhead, and say:
Hail to the elementals at the four quarters!
Welcome Lady and Lord to this rite!
I stand between the worlds
With love and power all around!
|
 |
Set down athame and pick up goblet of wine. Pour a little into the
cauldron. This is a libation to the Divine in which they are honored by
offering to them the first draught, then you take a sip. You may prefer
to have a bowl specifically for the libation. Ring bell three times.
Raise the wand in greeting, and say:
I, (your craft or working name), who am your child,
stand between the worlds
and call upon my Lady and my Lord,
(names) to hold communion with me.
|
 |
Ring bell three times and say:
If it harms none, do what you will.
Thus runs the Witch's Rede.
Once more I affirm my joy of life and
union with the Lady and the Lord.
I honor the God and the Goddess,
for the favors they have bestowed upon me,
and ask their blessings upon me.
(Instead of the Rede. You could say, "I
acknowledge that what I send out returns to me and conduct my Craft
accordingly," or address your own thoughts.)
|
 |
Set the salted water on the pentacle, hold the athame over it, and say:
Great Mother, bless this creature
May I always remember the cauldron waters
of rebirth and the many forms and beings
of the blessed earth. Of water and earth am I.
|
 |
Hold water bowl aloft, and say:
Great Mother, I honor you
(You are showing your respect for the Lady and the element that represents her in this ritual)
|
 |
Replace the water bowl in the proper place on the altar. Place censer on the pentacle, hold athame over it, and say:
Great Father, bless this creature
Of fire and of air to your service.
May I always remember the sacred fire
That dances within every creation
And hear the voices of the Divine.
Of fire and air am I
|
 |
Raise the censer aloft and say:
Great Father, I honor you!
|
 |
Return censer to the proper place on the altar. Raise the cup of wine up and say:
Power and grace; beauty and strength
Are in the Lady and the Lord both
Patience and love, wisdom and knowledge.
I honor you both!
|
 |
Pour a libation into the cauldron and take a sip of wine. Stand at the
altar, facing north, open arms upraised and feet apart, say:
Behold the Great Lady,
Who travels the sky;
The stars shine around her
And light up the night
|
 |
Take up wand and say:
Lovely Lady known by so many names,
but known to me as (name/s)
with (God's name)at your side,
honor and reverence I give to you and invite you
to join with me on this, your special night.
Descend my Lady and speak with your child,
Whom you have named (your name)
|
 |
At this time you may hear her speak something pertinent to you, or if
you needed guidance on a matter, she will instruct you. Replace the
wand on the altar. You may now do any spell work, divinations,
consecrations, etc. at this time
|
 |
Once the workings are done it is time for "Cakes and Wine" and then time to close the circle. |

The New Moon is used for personal
growth, healing, the blessing of a new project or venture, etc. If done
correctly, success should be obtained by the first Full Moon.*
This is the time when the Crone is transformed into the Maiden. It is a time of renewal and new beginnings.
The Maiden is essential to the continuation of all life; her color is
white, denoting innocence and newness. She is the springtime, the dawn,
eternal youth and vigor, enchantment and seduction, the new and waxing
moon.**

Cast circle in usual way, see Full Moon Rite
After libations to the Goddess and God, stand with head bowed and arms
crossed over chest; chant the name of the Goddess (such as Hecate) then
proceed:
As (names you use for the Goddess) is known,
this is the moon of my Lady as crone,
Lady of darkness, of wisdom, of mysteries shown.
The wheel turns through birth, death, and rebirth,
and every end is a new beginning.
You are the passage from life to life.
You are she who is at the beginning
and the end of all time.
You, with your Lord (his name)
at your side, abide in us all.
So mote it be.
|
 |
Enjoy a moment of reverent silence to consider the mysteries and your
special closeness to the Goddess of the Witches. You may now do any
spell work appropriate for the new moon.
Proceed to Cakes and wine. |

The three days before the New Moon
is known as the dark of the moon. This is when you can't see the moon
at all in the heavens. Traditionally, this is a time when no magick is
performed. It is a period to give yourself a break; a time of rest.
Deep meditation and vision questing can be performed now, but not for a
specific magickal purpose. However, The Crone, or the Dark Mother,
rules this time, and if her magick is needed, now is the time when you
should use it.*
 |
Stand in silence as you draw down the power. Then go to the East, raise your sword (dagger) in greeting and say:
Hail, Dawn-Treader, great wolf of the East,
whose yellow eyes see all in the Element of Air!
I do summon you here to protect and defend me.
|
 |
Move to the North; say:
Hail, Ice-Leaper, great wolf of the North,
whose green eyes see all in the Element of Earth!
I do summon you here to protect and defend me.
|
 |
Go to the West; say:
Hail, Night-Stalker, great wolf of the West,
whose blue eyes see all in the Element of Water!
I do summon you here to protect and defend me.
|
 |
Finish by going to the South. Say:
Hail, Sun-Chaser, great wolf of the South,
whose red eyes see all in the Element of Fire!
I do summon you here to protect and defend me.
|
 |
Move counterclockwise back around until you once again stand before the altar. Say:
Great Dark Mother, I call upon you
to build up this protection.
To send back all the evil
that has been sent against me.
|
 |
Raise you sword high; Say:
Dark Mother, Queen of the Night,
there are those who stand against me.
Let their efforts fail.
Let them go down into darkness.
Let them stand in the courts of Hel.
May their efforts always be lost in the darkness
with no light to guide them.
I am your child!
Protect me, Dark Mother.
|
 |
Rest the sword point down at your feet. Say:
Dark Mother, help me reach my goals,
live my life to the fullest,
walk a path of Light and balance.
Sweep away all barriers built by those who want me to fail.
Crush the evil sent against me!
Sweep its evil remains back into the
bodies and brains who sent it!
The evil is Dead!
The attackers taste their just rewards!
Their mouths are full of ashes,
their thoughts of nightmares,
their lives of unfulfillment!
I stand under the sword and hand of the Goddess!
So mote it be!
|
 |
As you draw a pentagram on the floor between your feet with the sword. Say:
It is done!
|
 |
Lay aside the sword. Say:
Your hands protect me, from Dark Moon to Dark Moon
Your sword covers me, from Dark Moon to Dark Moon
The wolves guard me, from Dark Moon to Dark Moon
All love and honor to the Dark Mother.
|
 |
This is the time for any spellworking and to finish any other ritual
matters. Then take the sword and go to the East. Raise it in greeting,
and say:
Farewell, Dawn-Treader!
My thanks for your protection and defense.
Depart in peace. Blessed be.
|
 |
Move to the North; say:
Farewell, Ice-Leaper!
My thanks for your protection and defense.
Depart in peace. Blessed be.
|
 |
Move to the West; say:
Farewell, Night-Stalker!
My thanks for your protection and defense.
Depart in peace. Blessed be.
|
 |
Finish by going to the South; say:
Farewell, Sun-Chaser!
My thanks for your protection and defense.
Depart in peace. Blessed be.
|
 |
Stand before the altar again, with arms raised; say:
My thanks to the Goddess
And to all who have helped here tonight.
Depart in peace. Blessed be.
Close the circle, remembering to go clockwise.

The period between the New Moon and
the Full Moon is called the Waxing Moon. This is a good time for
attraction magick, especially between the New Moon and the First
Quarter.*
The Waxing Moon is the time for invoking the Goddess in her guise of Maiden.

Set
up altar and circle, calling upon the elementals and deities, and use
patchouli incense on the altar for the element of air. The herbs used
are empowered by mixing them with the athame in a bowl and passing the
bowl throught the representations of the elements as you call upon them
to charge the herbs with their power. Salt for earth, candle flame (the
Lady and the Lord candles) for fire, incense for air, and blessed water
for water.
The following herbs are combined and may be dropped into a green candle
anointed with bergamot oil and then inscribed with the symbols for the
Lady , and the Lord , victory , good fortune ,
prosperity , wealth , and completion . Or, the combined herbs may be
dropped into a simmering potpourri, such as are popular for scenting
homes, and use a little candle underneath the pot to generate the heat.
* 1 teaspoon allspice (may be omitted for potpourri)
* 1 teaspoon bergamot mint
* 1 teaspoon comfrey
* 1 teaspoon chamomile
* 1 teaspoon cinquefoil
* 1 tablespoon whole cloves (may be omitted for potpourri)
* 1 teaspoon nutmeg
* 1 teaspoon mint
* 1 teaspoon marjoram
As the herbs are dropped into the hot water in the potpourri simmerer, say:
With the power of air is the spell carried,
with the power of fire is the magic released,
with the power of water is the will spread,
and with the power of earth is the goal brought into being.
If using the candle method, drop the herbs into the flame and say:
With the power of air is the spell carried,
And with the power of fire is the magic released.
With fingertip, dip into the bowl of altar water, let a drop fall into the melting candle wax of the votive, and say:
With the power of water is the will spread
With the tip of the athame, take a bit of altar salt and drop it into the melting wax and say:
With the power of earth is the goal brought into being.
With wand in hand, move it in a circular motion three times over the pot or candle, direct the energy into it, and say:
Let this spell be spread into the air,
Grant that nothing may my work impair.
Bring success and wealth to me,
As this I spell, so mote it be!
Let the magic work for one hour, then snuff the candle and check the
wax for signs and symbols. With the potpourri, put out the candle
underneath and read the pattern of the herbs within as you would for
tea leaves.

The period between the Full Moon and
the New Moon is called the Waning Moon. This is a time for banishing
and rejecting things in our lives that we no longer wish to carry
around with us. Negative emotions, bad habits, diseases, and ailments
can successfully be banned during this time.*
During the Waning Moon the Mother Goddess is transformed into the Crone. Invoke Her in this guise.
The Crone, or Dark Mother, sometimes called the Hag, has black as her
color, the color of darkness where all life rests before rebirth. This
aspect of the Goddess is Winter, night, wisdom, counsel, the gateway to
death and reincarnation, the Waning Moon.** |
