WHUS Ancient Archives

Super67 Radio Rare & Rockin' Records Repository

When I first started with the Ancient Archives in the Fall of 1960, I wanted to get a "sound". I looked around to see what engineering resources were available. Finding nothing, I emptied the Control Room wastebasket; placed it under the mike; stuffed the gooseneck & mike into the circular file; and spoke over it to get a "cave" sound. Later that year, I did some shows using Robert Kline's Fender spring reverberation unit (he was also from the Middlesex Hall dorm second floor and had a band that did very well at Student Union dances). Later, when the station bought the Ampex deck, I used it in the Control Room for echo.

Back in the early 60s, we had to close the Student Union studios at 1AM on Fri and Sat nights and that's why I was asked to record some Ancient Archives tapes for playing on the Crown tape playback units that took 3-hour tapes. That process began using 1.5-Hour tapes on the Magnacord in the studio. I did one of those and two of the 6-hour variety. The Crown decks (or were they Presto, as one leader tape from a show I recorded in 1964 says?) weren't recorders, so to record a 6 hour Ancient Archives show I put the large reels on a rack mounted deck in Studio "A" that wasn't a recorder either and placed the Wollensak recorder on its head on top of the rack as the half-track recorder. Someone would start both decks and I'd start "broadcasting" a 3-hour show. Then we flipped the tapes over for the other side. It was the only way to record on those huge reels!

Rockin' Russ has converted an early 60s Ancient Archives Show tape to .mp3 files, some or all of which may be available for playing or downloading from the WHUS Radio website if they ever get around to putting them on their site. They have had the files since 2004, so I doubt that they will.

Here are the segment Playlists and approximate times for each .mp3 file in the collection. Each 1/2 hour of the show is in two parts. Links are provided for each 12mb - 16mb part file that is available now from WHUS alumnus Terry King's website. Click on the link to listen to the segment. If you want to download the segment to listen to it offline whenever you have the urge, right click on the link then left click on "Save Target As".
